STRAND, Paul
16 Gravures from Photography Year Book 1963
New York: Brooklyn College 1963. Presentation copy from one of America's most influential photographers First edition presentation copy inscribed by Paul Strand on the rear wrapper "To Cipe and Will with affection Paul" - a superb association linking one of the great photographers of the 20th century with two of the most influential figures in American graphic design. Cipe Pineles long associated with Condé Nast and later the first woman to serve as autonomous art director of a mass-market magazine transformed editorial visual culture in the 1930s and 40s championing the use of fine artists in commercial illustration and breaking multiple professional barriers. Her husband William "Bill" Golden rose to become the seminal art director of CBS before his early death in 1958. Accompanying the book is a group of three intimate ingeniously handmade cards sent by Paul Strand and his third wife the photographer Hazel Kingsbury Strand spanning more than two decades of friendship. Each combines personal news with visual elements assembled for the recipients - small affectionate constructions that verge on artists' books and speak directly to the Strands' shared creative life and to their long professional connection with CBS. One 1951 celebrates Pineles and Golden's adoption of their son with Hazel noting Strand's ongoing work; another 1958 sent from their home at La Briardière and decorated with Hazel's sampler discusses Strand's "Scotch book" project later published as Tir a'Mhurain 1962; and the last 1974 illustrated with a winter photograph of their house reflects on advancing age work in progress and mutual friends in London and New York. WorldCat lists copies of 16 Gravures at only four institutions Yale Currier Museum of Art New Hampshire Institute of Art Library and the Harry Ransom Center. Small quarto pp. 16. 16 black and white illustrations on 8 plates. Original moderate orange printed wrappers. Edges lightly rubbed couple of nicks to head of front wrapper. An excellent copy. unknown

STRAND, Paul & Claude Roy
La France de Profil.
Lausanne La Guilde De Livre 1952. . First edition first impression; 4to 280 x 218 mm 11 x 8½ in; black-and-white photographs printed in gravure; flexible card boards publisher's photo-illustrated wrappers affixed to spine as issued without the glassine ownership name to front free endpaper spine a little creased and with minute loss at the ends; very good indeed; 121 7pp one gatefold.<br /> Paul Strand moved to France in 1950 aged 60 largely to escape McCarthyism which was prevailing in America. He had initially intended to locate what he felt to be the perfect French village or small town then photograph it in depth and proceeded to travel and photograph throughout France. However he didn't manage to settle on any one community so instead Strand collaborated with the writer Claude Roy to make a composite portrait of France and the French people using the photographs he made in the hundreds of locations he had visited. La France de Profil follows themes consistent throughout Strand's career: the dignity of ordinary people their relationship with nature the necessity of work and labour and ultimately their mortality.<br /><br />In a later essay Roy wrote 'Strand did not try to rediscover or renew France's image through the artful tricks and inventions of his craft. He simply tried to penetrate it by descending into the country's taciturn depths with the unhurried docility of a pebble making its inevitable way to the bottom of a well.'<br /> The Book of 101 Books pp136-137. Les Hébrides: Pays de l'herbe sous le vent
Lausanne: Éditions Clairefontaine 1962. First French language edition. Hardcover. g. Quarto. 151 1pp. Original photo-illustrated dust-jacket over grey cloth with black lettering on spine and front cover. This volume features Paul Strand's 105 beautifully sequenced photographs taken from his 1954 visit to the rugged island of South Uist off the west coast of Scotland. Juxtaposing people and the landscape these staggering beautiful images depict the timeless complicity he saw between humankind and nature in this wild terrain. In the spirit of La France de Profil and Un Pases: Portrait of an Italian Valley these meditative photographs celebrate the wholesome beauty of everyday life. Whether it is a view of rocks and the sea of scudding clouds hanging over a seaside hamlet or the proud figure of an earthbound fisherman before his stone cottage Strand's transcendent images render the island and its inhabitants timeless and eternal. Age wear on dust-jacket with rubbing and sporadic creasing along edges and head and tail of spine taped at verso. Some abrasion on spine. Moderate age-toning along paper margin. Text in French. Dust-jacket in overall fair binding in very good interior in good condition. Éditions Clairefontaine hardcover
