Sebbene il suo nome sia ancora oggi poco noto al grande pubblico, l'opera e le idee di Bernays hanno influenzato profondamente le strategie comunicative e politiche dal secolo scorso e fino ai giorni nostri. In occasione dell'anniversario dei 90 anni dalla prima pubblicazione, riproponiamo con una nuova traduzione questo controverso - e per certi versi inquietante - saggio breve, divenuto nel corso degli anni un testo culto in cui si teorizza, forse per la prima volta in termini così espliciti, la necessità, per una democrazia sana, di ricorrere a tecniche "scientifiche" per "plasmare" e "inquadrare" l'opinione pubblica: per dar luogo a quell'«ingegneria del consenso» di cui Bernays fu pioniere e primo teorico. La propaganda come strumento d'elezione per la manipolazione dell'opinione pubblica in democrazia è teorizzata da Bernays come essenziale al buon funzionamento di ogni settore della società: la manipolazione "scientifica" dell'opinione pubblica - «per portare ordine laddove regna il caos» - deve essere l'obiettivo principale del moderno consulente in pubbliche relazioni e raggiungere ogni campo della vita: politica, affari, arte, scienza e servizi sociali. L'arte delle pubbliche relazioni diviene quindi essenziale per permettere la piena realizzazione della società democratica, in cui la «minoranza intelligente» riesca a plasmare la maggioranza silente e gregaria in vista di obiettivi e scopi «positivi e costruttivi», tendenti alla pace sociale e al benessere del maggior numero di uomini possibili.

Bernays, nipote di Freud, emigrato da un paio di decenni in America, scrive un manuale su come orientare l'opinione pubblica: Propaganda. Un testo crudo nella sua sincerità, che tocca non solo il modo di vendere prodotti che il mercato non è ancora pronto ad accettare, ma che considera la politica al pari di una merce qualsiasi, mostrando il modo di influenzare i risultati elettorali e quindi i meccanismi decisionali che stanno alla base della democrazia. A partire da questo saggio illuminante, Bernays farà una carriera di "spin doctor" straordinaria. Diventerà il dottore dell'età del consumo e lo stratega finissimo nel lanciare le mode. Sarà consulente ascoltatissimo delle strategie industriali della American Tobacco Company, della Dodge, della General Motors, dei grandi trust dell'energia. Ma anche dell'Associazione degli industriali americani che combatterono il New Deal di Roosevelt. E nel dopoguerra, in piena Guerra fredda, divenne il suggeritore del colpo di stato antisocialista in Guatemala, pur di difendere i minacciati interessi della United Fruit, attraverso una influente operazione di lobbying al Congresso americano. Inutile dire che il suo insegnamento e le sue riflessioni teoriche sono ancora di grande attualità, in una fase quale quella odierna segnata dalle nuove macchine di propaganda "sovraniste". Un libro che non vende "prodotti" ma idee per farlo.

Ausgabe wurde nicht geknickt, altersentsprechend sehr gut erhalten. Die Ausgabe aus dem Jahr 1944 beinhaltet den größeren Beitrag "Bei Nettuno" über die alliierte Landung in Italien und die deutsche Reaktion mit mehreren Abbildungen. Interessant ist auch der Beitrag "Sektor 10-12 stärkere Brände. Polizei-Einsatz im Terrorangriff" über die Arbeit der Polizei nach Bomberangriffen auf die Städte. Enthalten ist auch der kurze Bildbeitrag "Größer als der Größte" über das Großraumflugboot BV 222 "Wicking", das damals größte Transportflugzeug der Luftwaffe. Auch einige antiamerikanische und antisowjetische Stücke sind enthalten. Enthalten sind auch mehrere unterhaltende Artikel für die Berliner, sowie zahlreiche zeitgenössische Werbeanzeigen.
