This collection of papers by Prof. Ilber Ortayli mainly deals with the political, economic, social and cultural transformations, which Ottoman Empire has undergone in its last centuries. Within the frame of millet conception, which was unique to the Empire as an administration system, this book looks into the areas of transformation, including the modernization struggles, tendencies in historiography, structural and judicial changes in family relations, provincial and urban structures and the relations between Russia and the Ottoman Empire. Prof. Ortayli details the millet system through allocating special titles for non-Muslim minorities in the Empire like the Jews and the Greeks. Similarly, he reveals the relations between Ottomanism and Zionism in the Empire's last decades. After giving a picture of the constitution and the parliament, he glances at how the history of the Ottoman Empire and Russia are approached in the historiographies. Turning back to the debates on modernization, he explains the background, starting from the second Vienna siege in 1683. In the following chapter he examines the structural changes in the international affairs of the Ottoman state. Before delving into the changes in civil life, he assigns two chapters to the provincial structures in the Empire's port cities. Meticulously examining the archives and sources about the late Ottoman history, Prof. Ortayli gives a comprehensive and multifaceted picture of the Empire. Moreover, he utilizes a wide range of Ottoman archives. Thanks to his language skills, he provides insights from several scholars whose writings in different languages enrich this book.

Through the study of this newspaper, this book tries to shed light on certain aspects of the ideological developments that took place in the Ottoman Empire during the first months of the Second Constitutional Period, giving one example of one of the possible handicaps of Ottoman modernization.It would seem that at least a part of Izmir's Greek-orthodox bourgeoisie - to which the publishers of Ergatis belong - rally around goals that are not very different from the goals pursued by the Young Turks: uniting all Ottomans around a notion of Ottomanism, modernizing the Ottoman Empire and constructing an Ottoman national economy. However, their inability - or unwillingness - to sever their ties with their community's traditional leadership and ideology, places severe constraints upon their modernizing discourse.".

Very Good Turkish Original wrappers. 24mo. (12,5 x 9 cm). In Turkish. 64 p. First and only edition of this scarce modern utopian project of a Turkish - American electronic music composer Mimaroglu. Yokistan [i.e. Neverland] is an example of contemplating what the "best" life could be like in a place that doesn't exist. The economic system of the country is communist capitalism. Everyone is paid equal wages. There is no religion, no property, no unemployment, and no retirement. There is no family. There is no marriage in the text as a precondition for the absence of a family. The unit of society is the individual. The people are given their identities individually. The names of the parents are not on the identity card but may be included in the population register as useful information for authentication when necessary. There is birth control in this utopia. Giving birth without permission is considered a felony. Mimaroglu was born in Istanbul, after his graduation, he went to study in New York supported by a Rockefeller Scholarship. He studied musicology at Columbia University under Paul Henry Lang and composition under Douglas Moore. During the 1960s he studied at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Center under Vladimir Ussachevsky and on occasion worked with Edgard Varèse and Stefan Wolpe. His notable students included Ingram Marshall. He worked as a producer for Atlantic Records, where he created his own record label, Finnadar Records, in 1971. In the same year, he collaborated with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard on an anti-war statement, Sing Me a Song of Songmy. He also was the producer for Charles Mingus' Changes One and Changes Two, and contributed to the soundtrack of Federico Fellini's Fellini Satyricon. 1873. Original manuscript. Hardcover. 48pp of handwritten sentiments from friends and family; four engraved plates tissue guards title-page vignette. Bound in red morocco blind-stamped decorations chrome-litho floral pieces on both covers gilt cover lettering and spine decorations all edges gilt. 8.25" x 6.5". Pieces of spine covering chipped from both ends; internally in very good condition. Many of the entires in this album were written at Tiskilwa Mt. Carroll and Rochelle all in Illinois and a few others are from Boston Orange NJ and St. Louis. Most are in ink a few in fading but readable pencil. Several contain richly calligraphed phrases or titles within their text while one woman offers three animal sketches 2 dogs and a buck. Some of the non-calligraphic hands are nevertheless beautiful and flowing illustrating the importance of penmanship in the school curricula of the day. Many entries contain short poems and some of these appear to be original since they mention “Mary†or “my sister†etc. ~~ Mary's album documents the prevailing sentiments of the era with inspirational messages on the importance of living a Christian life trusting in God/Jesus etc. Only a few are of the “remember me†variety. Some writings take up a full page including those of her father William R. Webb and her mother both religious. There are also entries by her father-in-law B. Lichty who signs with “Bless you is the prayer of your unworthy father†and by her sister Ada. One signer Will P. Hallett of Mt. Carroll writes that he’s signing the book “although I have not as yet formed your acquaintance†and goes on to hope that if they don’t meet “in this sinful world may God help us to meet around his throne….†An entry from Mrs. C.B. Boyer notes that “One year ago you came to us as a stranger and today you leave for your new home.†and concludes with sending her good wishes. The only signer of historical note seems to be Joseph Morris Ray who signed as “your friend†in June 1873 and later became an Iowa attorney and State Senator 1893-95 after residing in Mt. Carroll for many years. hardcover

Light wear Very Good. <br /> <br /> The broadside is dated and signed at the end in type on February 18 1848 by the members of the State Central Committee: J.R. Diller of Sangamon; John Moore of McLean; Peter Sweat of Peoria; M. McConnel of Morgan; B.C. Webster of Sangamon; and Edward Jones of Sangamon. The Committee members recommend scheduling the State Convention on April 24 1848 for nominating an electoral ticket delegates to the National Convention and candidates for State offices. <br /> The Sangamon County members were well known to Lincoln. "Outgoing congressman Lincoln recommended to the Taylor administration 'that Abner Y. Ellis be appointed Post-Master at this place whenever there shall be a vacancy. J. R. Diller the present incumbent I can not say has failed in the proper discharge of any of the duties of the office. He however has been an active partizan in opposition to us.
