First edition 8vo pp. xvi i.e. viii 19-298; 12 colored chromolithographic plates 8 after Seth Eastman; ex-library copy with usual markings pages slightly browned with mild foxing; good or better in recent brown cloth gilt lettering on spine. This is the second of the three Iris souvenir annuals 1851-1853; the 1852 volume is unique because the editor secured for it Mrs. Mary Eastman's collection of tales and poetry on Indian legends. While stationed at Fort Snelling her husband Captain Eastman made a series of drawings on Indian subjects and Mrs. Eastman collected the traditions which resulted in her tales and poetry on the Chippewa and Sioux Winona and Winona's Rock Wabashaw Flying Cloud Minnehaha Falls the "Laughing Waters" St. Anthony Falls and Spirit Island. Mrs. Eastman's writings were republished in 1852 under the title The Romance of Indian Life by Mrs. Mary Eastman Howes E-310; Sabin 21686. San Francisco and the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir: Hearings Held Before the Committee on the Public Lands of the House of Representatives December 16 1908 on H. J. Res. 184
Washington: Government Printing Office 1908. 9" x 6" 42 pp in original side-stapled wrappers. Minor wear to rear wrapper else fine. An important primary source relating to the controversial proposal to dam the Tuolumne River flood the Hetch Hetchy Valley then part of Yosemite National Park and create a reservoir to provide water to San Francisco and the surrounding region. San Francisco officials had floated the idea as early as 1901 but the proposal gained new urgency following the 1906 earthquake and fire. Opponents of the project most notably John Muir argued passionately for the preservation of the valley's great natural beauty and a vision of "development" based on tourism and recreation rather than support for urban growth. This pamphlet records congressional debate on the matter and includes statements submitted to congress from various parties on both sides. The outcome was a joint resolution "to allow the city and county of San Francisco to exchange land in the Yosemite National Park and adjacent national forest for portions of the Hetch Hetchy and Lake Eleanor Reservoir sites for purposes of a municipal water supply. " Much additional debate and negotiation ensued but ultimately construction of the dam began in 1913 and the valley was flooded in 1923. Government Printing Office unknown

Sea bass and lobster are the most carefully monitored especially "egg bearing" lobsters "taken for private use" $5 fine and lobsters "taking sic by non-licensed men" $20 fine. The bottom edge of the broadside concludes with the rules pertaining to fresh water fish should not be "taken in any other manner except with single hand lines with not over 2 hooks upon each". Corners rubbed through cloth partially split along front joint some pale staining to boards small repair to title page but still very good overall. Front free endpaper inscribed "George F. Noyes San Francisco June 18th 1861." Noyes was an attorney who practiced law in California as early as 1852 and was a partner in the San Francisco firm Janes Noyes & Barber. <br /> <br /> First edition second printing of "the first book-length description of the state's natural attractions and the first work to describe the big trees and the Yosemite region in detail" Currey & Kruska 164. The second printing was made from the plates of the 1860 first and is unchanged other than the date. Born in England Hutchings came to California for the Gold Rush in 1849 lived for several years in the mining regions and eventually became one of the most dedicated and energetic promoters of California and particularly the Yosemite Valley. He commissioned illustrations for his Hutchings California Magazine published from 1856 to 1861 which "preserved a good deal of material depicting the life and scenes of California in the decade following the Gold Rush.especially with respect to Yosemite the Big Trees and other scenic wonders Farquhar 4. The illustrations and much of the text of the first edition of Scenes of Wonder and Curiosity were extracted from the magazine. Hutchings and his wife ran the Hutchings House hotel in Yosemite from 1864-1874 and from 1880 to 1884 Hutchings served as Guardian of the Park then owned by the State of California. Shows Malatya, Adiyaman and Kharpout region; Firat River (Euphrates), Yazi Düzü, Erguvan etc. Scale: 1/200.000. This is one the serie of the Bonn projection maps which are the first map series in modern techniques in Turkey and the Ottoman Empire. In order to produce these maps covering Turkish territory, Reconnaissance Branch was incorporated into The Mapping Commission. The maps were produced in the datum based on the latitude and longitude of Ayasofya Mosque in equal area Bonn Projection. The field works for the 123 sheets covering the country were conducted by 76 staff. The production was completed in 18 years starting from east west. Field works continued without stopping except in years 1914 and 1920. This map series called also reconnaissance maps contributed a lot to producing 1:25.000 scale maps. [SHEET MUSIC] Geisha [= Die Geisha]. Muz. Sidney Djonsa (Sidney Jones). (Selection). The Geisha, a story of a tea house is an Edwardian musical comedy in two acts. The score was composed by Sidney Jones to a libretto by Owen Hall, with lyrics by Harry Greenbank. Additional songs were written by Lionel Monckton and James Philp. The Geisha opened in 1896 at Daly's Theatre in London's West End, produced by George Edwardes. The original production had the second longest run of any musical up to that time. The cast starred Marie Tempest and C. Hayden Coffin, with dancer Letty Lind and comic Huntley Wright. The show was an immediate success abroad, with an 1896 production in New York and numerous tours and productions in Europe and beyond. It continued to be popular until World War II and even beyond to some degree. The most famous song from the show is "The Amorous Goldfish". Stmped by A. Comendinger who was a legendary musical publisher in Constantinople in 19th and 20th century. This is a rare Russian Edition. This "selected" edition is not in OCLC.

Original dark green limp leatherette titles stamped in gilt on front cover in original plain cardboard slipcase with black spine titles. Very minor wear to binding. Modest wear and light soiling to slipcase. Internally clean. The last edition of the scarce yearbooks previously issued sporadically beginning in 1910 issued by The North American Times the largest and oldest Japanese-American daily newspaper in the Pacific Northwest. The NAT began in 1902 and was halted by the internment of its staff and most of its readership in 1942. After World War II the newspaper was restarted as The North American Post and is still published today. The bulk of the present volume is a directory of Japanese-American businesses and Japanese-American residents primarily in Washington but also Oregon Montana Idaho Nebraska Colorado Nevada California Wyoming Utah the territory of Alaska Illinois New York and Canada. The names are given in Japanese characters but the street addresses are provided in English. The California list is surprisingly small and there is no mention of Hawaii likely because there was an annual directory published for the Hawaiian islands by the Nippu Jiji Company. The present work is also chock full of illustrated advertisements interspersed throughout almost all of which pertain to businesses in Seattle. The work opens with a lengthy photographically-illustrated section featuring scenes in the Japanese community with group photographs of various Japanese organizations clubs sports teams and the like. There are also several pages featuring portraits of Japanese-American business and community leaders family portraits the interiors and exteriors of Japanese-owned businesses farm and nursery scenes church and school groups and more.<br /> <br /> A scarce Japanese-American directory with only a baker's dozen copies reported in OCLC -- six in a separate record for the 1936 edition with copies at Yale Lewis & Clark College Tacoma Public Library Seattle Public Library the Bancroft and UCLA plus seven copies in a serial record at Columbia Stanford Harvard the Library of Congress the University of Oregon the University of Washington and the University of British Columbia. unknown

Enyed, Zalathna, Mediasch, Hermannstadt, Hatszeg, Petroseni, Ôzt River, etc. Scale: 1/300,000. Sibiu (Sibiiu - Hermannstadt - Nagyszeben) is a city in Romanian Transylvania. The city straddles the Cibin River, a tributary of the river Olt. The first official record referring to the Sibiu area comes from 1191 when Pope Celestine III confirmed the existence of the free prepositure of the German settlers in Transylvania, the prepositure having its headquarters in Sibiu, named Cibinium at that time. In the 14th century, it was already an important trade center. As of the year 1376, the craftsmen were divided into 19 guilds. Sibiu became the most important ethnic German city among the seven cities that gave Transylvania its German name Siebenbürgen (literally "Seven Citadels"). It was home to the Universitas Saxorum (Community of the Saxons), a network of pedagogues, ministers, intellectuals, city officials, and councilmen of the German community forging an ordered legal corpus and political system in Transylvania since the 1400s. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the city became the second -and then the first most important center of Transylvanian Romanian ethnics. The first Romanian-owned bank had its headquarters here (The Albina Bank), as did the ASTRA (Transylvanian Association for Romanian Literature and Romanian's People Culture). After the Romanian Orthodox Church was granted status in the Habsburg Empire from the 1860s onwards, Sibiu became the Metropolitan seat, and the city is still regarded as the third-most important center of the Romanian Orthodox Church. Between the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 and 1867 (the year of the Ausgleich), Sibiu was the meeting-place of the Transylvanian Diet, which had taken its most representative form after the Empire agreed to extend voting rights in the region (Source: Wikipedia). It proposed to establish John Muir-Kings Canyon National Park and "preserve for all time in the National Park System the superlative canyons of the King's River. . . together with the Evolution Basin and the high peaks of the finest parts of the Sierra Nevada. . . . General Grant National Park would become General Grant Grove in the new park and the Big Trees of Redwood Canyon now unprotected would form another grove in the park. The verdict was "Not Guilty." <br /> <br /> Shaw and Shoemaker 11474; McDade 860 - "The killing of Austin by Selfridge arose out of a political dispute between Selfridge and the victim's father. The grand jury refused to indict him for murder; the charge was manslaughter. The case was long an authority on the law of self-defense. Paul Revere was a member of the jury which acquitted Selfridge." The previous owner of this copy Thomas C. Worthington 1782-1847 was a U.S. Representative from Maryland. Overall clean and solid. ; Brown wrappers with yapp edges lettered in black. Illustrated with two pages of portrait photographs of faculty twenty pages of portrait photographs of the Senior Class all but one page 16 photos each; group photographs of various clubs organizations sports teams. There are five holograph signatures on Faculty blank page two of which can be identified in the photos. On Senior Class blank there are 13 holograph signatures not including one Charlotte Newton who is pictured and underlined in ink. Also illustrated with drawings in the period style and many other ornaments and headpieces. Laid in are two folding Graduation Sunday State Normal School programs a scrap paper of holograph notes in pen notes from a sermon "1. Marriage 2. Raising Children 3. Building of a character 4. God's . As related to the family" etc. Plus a folded sheet with what appears to be a carbon manuscript of song lyrics for songs used in the graduation ceremony: "Tune Maryland My Maryland: Thou dost not falter in thy trust Normal School Old Normal School . . ." Finally: a 3.5 x 6" photograph titled in manuscript on the back" Roscoe Teachers' party - May 1945 my last year in L. A. Schools with a list of eleven names. Eleven names in pen also on the front top edge of the photo over the party attendees. Ohh! One more: 2.5" news clipping: "Provo Girl is Honored Miss Mayme Beesley . . . Of this city who has taken a course in education In the California State Normal School at Los Angeles . . ." Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original color map. Folded. Oblong atlas folio. (50 x 60 cm). In Ottoman script. Shows Southeastern parts of Asia Minor and Syria; Siverek, Sard (Iraq) and Ras Al-Ayn (Rasulayn - Resualyn) in Syria. Hegira: 1333 = Gregorian: 1917. Not description on map-maker. Scale: 1: 200.000. This is one the serie of the Bonn projection maps which are the first map series in modern techniques in Turkey and the Ottoman Empire. In order to produce these maps covering Turkish territory, Reconnaissance Branch was incorporated into The Mapping Commission. The maps were produced in the datum based on the latitude and longitude of Ayasofya Mosque in equal area Bonn Projection. The field works for the 123 sheets covering the country were conducted by 76 staff. The production was completed in 18 years starting from east west. Field works continued without stopping except in years 1914 and 1920. This map series called also reconnaissance maps contributed a lot to producing 1:25.000 scale maps. According to Türkezer & Çobanoglu: History of Mapping in Turkey-1:200.000 Scale Maps, last cartographer of Diyarbakir regio is M. Sait Malatyali. No his biographic material and info in 'Savaslarda Haritacilar'. Rare.

Fort Snelling Minnesota: US Army General Hospital No. 29 1919. 4to 14 weekly issues from vol. 1 no. 1 April 26 1919 to vol. 1. no. 14 July 24 1919 comprising the complete run of the magazine. Each number with 18 or 22 pages photographs and illustrations throughout original printed paper wrappers paper brittle and toned with some shallow chips to edges but no significant loss the occasional library stamp a very good set. The Reveille was established as a magazine for the military hospital at Fort Snelling. In its inaugural issue it makes the following statement: "Reveille makes its bow to the people of the Twin Cities and to all well-wishers everywhere. Its success means much for Fort Snelling and for its great Hospital . Through its pages all the progresses made along all lines will be duly reported." Includes general news and essays alongside news about personnel some of it serious but most clearly submitted as jokes by fellow service members "Mystery. How many sisters has Brown got They seem to come and they seem to go." cartoons sports and a section for nurses. The final issue of the magazine was July 24th and the hospital was discontinued in August 1st. A 15th volume was issued after the fact with the title Centennial Memorial of Fort Snelling. Very Good Turkish Original manuscript color map of Middle East including Syria, Palestine and Transjordan. Signed by cartographer. 28x20 cm. In Turkish (with Latin letters). The Mapping Department, which moved to Ankara from Istanbul after the Independence War, settled in the Attar Basi Khan in Koyunpazari and the press section also started its studies in the building which is the Art School in Ulus today. In 1924, the department, which is still inside the General Directorate Garrison, moved to the hut-shaped buildings with single floor between the Military Sewinghouse and the General Directorate. On the other hand, the production of maps and plans, which were to be used in development services carried out in parallel to the revolutions starting with the declaration of the Republic and following each other, was considered to be based on a legal arrangement. Because of the necessity of an urgent legal arrangement, the bill of law concerning to the General Directorate of Mapping, whose preparations were initiated by Lieut. Gen. M. Sevki (Ölçer) who knew the importance of the subject, was sent to the Ministry of Defense at the beginning of 1925. After the approval of Ministry of Defense, the bill, which was sent to the Prime Ministry, was discussed in the Council of Ministers and presented to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. As a result; the Mapping Department was re-organized as the General Directorate of Mapping affiliated with the Ministry of Defense with the law bearing the number 657 on May 2, 1925 in order to do all mapping works and meet the needs of maps and plans of all ministries, institutions and organizations. [.] The first application of photogrammetry was made in Kayas, Ankara with the Wild Autograph plotting apparatus which was purchased in that year. Captain Ömer Kadri and Captain Niyazi came back from their photogrammetry education in Germany. Major Halit and Major Nüzhet were sent to France for photogrammetry education and Captain Ishak and Captain Bahri were sent to Germany. Captain Ahmet (Denkmen) and Captain Ömer Kadri attended the Congress of Photogrammetry assembled in Berlin. (Source: The Illustrated History Of Turkish Cartography). Halid Ziya was born in Izmir, Tire. He went to Istanbul and continued to Hendese-i Mülkiye and Engineer Mekteb-i Âlîsi for seven years. After starting with "Aydin Province Umur-i Nafia Third Class Engineering", Halid Ziya Bey, who continued to work as a deputy chief engineer on 14 March 1910, left Aydin and returned to Istanbul after continuing this duty for about six and a half months. As a teacher, he taught Accounting, Algebra, Geometry, and Topography at Halkali Ziraat Mekteb-i Âlîsi and Darussafaka. Halid Ziya Bey, who was appointed as a teacher of Hendese and Cosmography in Kabatas High School, started to practice the profession of engineering and cadastral, which was his main specialty in 1327. After the First World War, the Istanbul Government started its activities in order to capture and neutralize Halid Ziya Bey and his friends. Upon the harsh measures taken, Halid Ziya Bey had to live as a fugitive in the Hasirci Mountains of Eskisehir for a while with the armed force attached to him. Halid Ziya Bey, who was involved in the movement in Anatolia until the end of the National Liberation Struggle, returned to his engineering duty after the proclamation of the Republic and was included in the cadastral works again. In 1925, Halid Ziya Bey was appointed as the Head of the Science Committee of the new cadastre organization. He wrote 5 books on cadastre, photogrammetry, trigonometry, and cadastral tools in 1928 and 1929. In addition, as a result of personal work in 1928, the road between the provincial division of the Republic of Turkey with cities has prepared a comprehensive map to show up in the forest and mining. Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original color map. 65,5x63 cm. In Ottoman script. This rare and decorative Gallipoli map including Hellespont, Gallipoli Peninsula, Suvla Bay, Seddülbahir, and Tenedos, the places of Gallipoli Aar in 1915 (Dardanelles Campaign) during World War 1, separated two map views. Seddulbahir and Suvla Bay at north and Straight, Peninsula, and its shores with Tenedos (now Bozcaada) at the southwest of the map. It's a very detailed and rare map printed with the series of "History of the Dardanelles Campaign" after the seven years of war. The Gallipoli campaign, also known as the Dardanelles campaign, the Battle of Gallipoli or the Battle of Çanakkale (Turkish: Çanakkale Savasi, or, Muharebâti), was a military campaign in the First World War that took place on the Gallipoli peninsula (Gelibolu in modern Turkey), from 17 February 1915 to 9 January 1916. The Entente powers, Britain (with Anzacs), France, and Russia, sought to weaken the Ottoman Empire, one of the Central Powers, by taking control of the Turkish straits.
