Samuel Allison 1739-1791 was a Burlington attorney who had an interest in both politics and the law. In 1762 he was commissioned as one of the surrogates for West Jersey and was put to work compiling a new edition of provincial laws which is the current volume and covers the period from 1702 to 1776. Allison was a Quaker who opposed slavery and secession from the British Empire. He worked throughout his life to end slavery and became a spokesperson for a sizeable Quaker community in New Jersey. The present work includes coverage of relief of the poor raising money for public buildings preventing the waste of timber and the regulation of slaves. There are several manuscript corrections to the text in this copy which according to Felcone appear to be the rule for all copies. New Jersey in the American Revolution. Felcone 158. Evans 14911. ‎[New York City]. Office of the Secretary of State Hudson Tunnel Railway Company‎

‎Hudson Tunnel Map and Profil sic. Profile of the first tunnel under the Hudson River with Certificate‎

‎Albany NY: State of New York 1909. First edition. Very good clean copy with long tear repaired on th verso and tiny chips at one fold on map inch tear to fore edge of certificate and along bottom margin. Ink on drafting vellum with colored outlines. 15 x 24 inches. Docket sheet mounted to verso. In 1874 the Hudson Tunnel Railroad Company soon named the Hudson River Railway Company was formed to construct tunnels between Jersey City and Greenwich Village the route originally to be about two miles commencing at a point under the Hudson River in the westerly boundaryline of the state of New York opposite the foot of Clarkson street at the termination of the Hudson Tunnel Railroad Company of New Jersey and thence running by a feasible route under the bed of the river and beneath the surface of the city of New York to a point at or near the westerly side of Broadway between Prince and Eighth streets; from whence the line proceeds via Sixth avenue to Thirty-third street New York but stopped construction well before completion. The assets land partially-constructed tunnels trackage etc. were eventually sold to the newly-organized New York & Jersey Railroad incorporated on February 12 1902 under the leadership of William G. McAdoo who was later U.S. Treasury Secretary and which then became the Hudson and Manhattan Railroad 1906. The original of this profile was drafted in 1891 before the railroad collapsed and the present certified copy was prepared by the Secretary of State's office on February 25 1909 almost exactly one year after the official opening of the tunnel the Pennsylvania Railroad's North River Tunnels the second to burrow under the Hudson did not open until late 1910. The reason that a copy of the map was requested is not known but what is known is that the railroad was seeking to extend the Sixth Avenue line later as well as other related projects. Perhaps the map was needed to settle some land issue or in some legal negotiations as the pencilled word "referee" appears after two sets of initials. The tunnels still carry a heavy load of PATH train commuters between Jersey City and Manhattan. Similar maps are difficult to locate. The closest a printed "Map of Hudson & Manhattan Railroad Hudson tunnel system January 1908" is located at the University of Chicago and the Jersey City Historical Society. ‎OHIO GOVERNMENT Journal of the House of Representatives of the State of Ohio; Being the First Session of the Thirty-Seventh General Assembly Begun and Held in the City of Columbus Monday December 3 1838 And in the Thirty-Seventh Year of Said State‎

‎Columbus Ohio: Samuel Medary Printer to the State 1838. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good-. Thick octavo 809pp. plus Appendices. A nearly very good unrestored copy in contemporary marbled paper over boards with brown morocco spine and black spine label done a bit amateurishly by the original binder which we find appealing. Corners rounded previous owner's stamp on the front paste-down front free endpaper mostly detached but holding. 20th-century notecard attached with paper clip to that same endleaf. Contents clean. Surprisingly rare compendium of the proceedings of Ohio's 37th General Assembly. Contents are diverse; there are motions to incorporate business and towns approvals of plans for canals and roadways and even occasional brief references to slavery and other political issues of the day. Though the title page is dated 1838 some of the recorded events are dated through part of 1839 while this may be an error the contents confirm that these are indeed the proceedings of the 37th session. OCLC records no physical or electronic holdings for this session and just one or two each for occasional years in the 1830s and 1840s. We note further that AAS retains a number of examples from other years in this period but not for the 37th General Assembly. None of these scarce volumes are noted in Morgan. The most recent auction record for any comparable example is from 1997. A richly detailed look at the legislative proceedings of Ohio when it was still more of a frontier state than an industrial powerhouse. Samuel Medary, Printer to the State hardcover‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Fine brown quarter leather bdg., brown boards with decorative embossing. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic script). 176 p., 33 unnumbered b/w plates of views of the Middle Eastern cities, Kaiser and queen's portraits, ills. of their maritime voyages, a general view of Beirut, a panorama of Jerusalem (in two pages), The Government House and Lake Tiberia in Beirut, a general view of Jaffa, churches and castles and Masjid-i Aksa of Jerusalem, Idlib, the interior of the Umayyad Mosque in Jerusalem, The Government House of Jaffa, Beirut - Damascus railways, street views and architectural buildings from Damascus, the market place of Jaffa, Bethlehem and the church, views of Trablus-Sam [i.e. Tripolis], ruins of Baalbek, and other numerous b/w photos, published for only this book. Slight stains on pages, a modern repair on a leaf with tape, otherwise a very good copy. Bound together with "Eski Sevda" which is a compilation of Turkish tales. First and only edition of this richly illustrated scarce and uncommon book was printed for the German Emperor Wilhelm II and his wife Augusta Victoria, the commemoration of the construction of Alman Çesmesi [i.e. German Fountain] in Constantinople, and the first anniversary of the Wilhelm II's travel to the Ottoman Empire in 1898. The fountain's design was drawn by the architect Spitta and constructed by the architect Schoele with the German architect Carlitzik and Italian architect Joseph Anthony, working on the project. The fountain was built in Germany and then transported piece by piece to Istanbul, reassembled in its current site, and officially opened on January 27, 1901, on the birthday of German Emperor Wilhelm II. Wilhelm II's voyage to the Levant in 1898 was a state visit that the German Emperor undertook in the Ottoman Empire between 25 October and 12 November 1898. The Kaiser started his journey to the Ottoman Eyalets with Istanbul on 16 October 1898; then he went by yacht to Haifa on 25 October. After visiting Jerusalem and Bethlehem, the Kaiser went back to Jaffa to embark on Beirut, where he took the train passing Aley and Zahlé to reach Damascus on 7 November. This book is richly illustrated including many views of the cities of this voyage's destinations like Jerusalem, Damascus, Beirut (Beirut), Jafa, Baalbek, etc. On 10 November, Wilhelm went to visit Baalbek before heading to Beirut to board his ship back home on 12 November. His visit spurred interest in the German Templer colonies in Palestine. One of the Kaiser's traveling companions, Colonel Joseph von Ellrichshausen, initiated the formation of a society for the advancement of the German settlements in Palestine, named the Gesellschaft Zur Förderung der Deutschen Ansiedlungen in Palästina, in Stuttgart. It enabled the settlers to acquire land for new settlements by offering them low-interest loans. A subsequent second wave of German settlers founded Wilhelma (named after the Kaiser, now called Bnei Atarot) in 1902 near Lod, Walhalla (1903) near the original Jaffa colony, followed by Bethlehem of Galilee (1906). The German Settlement Society successfully encouraged some of the Templars to return to the official, national Protestant Church. The non-Templar colony of Waldheim (now Alonei Abba) was subsequently founded next to Bethlehem of Galilee in 1907 by proselytized Templers now affiliated with the Old-Prussian State Church. The visit resulted in the highest-profile political event in the life of Theodor Herzl, considered the founder of Zionism. Through the efforts of William Hechler, via Frederick I, Grand Duke of Baden, Herzl publicly met Wilhelm II three times during the voyage, once in Istanbul (on 15 October 1898) and twice in Palestine (29 October and 2 November). The meetings significantly advanced Herzl's and Zionism's legitimacy in Jewish and world opinion. (Wikipedia). Only one copy in OCLC (Library of Congress. ‎Proposal for Transportation and Engineering Services for the Orange County Transportation Commission. High Flow Arterial Concept Study‎

‎Newport Beach and Fullerton CA: Boyle Engineering Corporation and Weston Pringle and Associates 1981. Softcover. Very good. 8.5 x 11 comb binding. Not paginated but ca. 75 pages printed rectos only. Includes a section of color illustrations and several flow charts. A photocopy of the Orange County Transportation Commission's Request for Proposals to which this is a response is laid in. The idea was to examine ways to design and implement a "High Flow Arterial Concept" in order to "increase the efficiency of existing arterial highways by grade separating major arterial intersections to reduce the number of stops required in the average trip." The RFP goes on to note that "this is an engineering concept which is possible but could have far-reaching cost and social implications. It is also a concept which if practical could help remedy many of the County's transportation problems." Interesting early discussion of traffic congestion and transportation planning issues in rapidly developing Orange County California. ‎Speech of Mr. Wm. B. Preston of Virginia in the House of Representatives February 7 1849 on the Formation of a New State Out of the Territories of California and New Mexico‎

‎Washington DC: J. & G.S. Gideon 1849. First Edition. Softcover. Very Good. 16 pp in original self-wrappers. Some handling wear light foxing. Preston proposed the creation of a single new state from all of the former Mexican territory. It was generally assumed that this would not be a slave state the land not being conducive to plantation farming but Preston took no explicit stand on the slavery issue in his bill. Instead he argued that Congress should not make "such rules and regulations as are necessary for the government of the territories" for this would be like "a foreign government" such as the British making a critical decision for "a people abroad" such at the American colonies. "Territorial dominion was given to us" he argues "not that we might place slavery there or freedom there--not that we might go into municipal legislation in detail for these provinces--but it was that we should rear up there sovereign and independent States." When a stipulation forbidding slavery was added to the bill later in the month it was defeated after an all-night session of name-calling and fistfights. Sabin 65385. J. & G.S. Gideon paperback‎

The idea that constitutional government not only would solve political problems, but would alsa be a magical spur to economic prosperity, was not an unusual one for this period. Same of the New Ottomans espoused it. At almost exactly the same time as Halil Serif wrote his memorandum, Mustafa Fazil Pasa published his famous Letter Addressed to Sultan Abdülaziz; this letter also proposed a constitution, as a solution t o the Ottoman Empire's domestic economic, social, and political problems. A constitution, said Mustafa Fazil, would bring liberty, resare individual initiative, aid in cultural development and improve the economy". The political system of France, England, and Belgium and the economic development of those same countries impressed a nll.Ilfber of Ottomans. Their observation and analysis may have been superficial, but their admiration for various aspects of western European life was ·genuine..."
