The Lykens Valley Railroad and Coal Company was incorporated in Pennsylvania in 1830; Thomas P. Cope was the first president. It ran from Millersburg to Williamstown and was the fourth in the United States and the first in Dauphin County to carry anthracite coal. By 1845 the line had to be regraded and relaid. It merged into the Penndel Co. in 1956. Written at the head of the front wrapper: "Preserve with Care." Very scarce. In Good- Condition: wrapper is lightly soiled; front wrapper is detached but present with closed 4-cm. tear from gutter edge; somewhat brittle with chipping at edges and separations at gutters; a few notations internally; otherwise clean. EX-PACIFIC UNION CLUB LIBRARY San Francisco with their bookplate on front pastedown and only small call numbers on copyright page in pencil and one in ink. No other library treatments. The library tended to add other related material to their books in this case what appears to be a contemporary clipping of a review of the book tipped-in on half-title. And: a four page handwritten letter on letterhead of The University Club of New York referencing page 303 of Around the Horn regarding the application for a charter for The University of California from Lyman's son Chester W. Lyman to "Dear Will Crocker I have got all the facts I want from a history of the University of CA. It appears that the proposed five trustees mentioned in the . . . p. 303 of 'Around the Horn' did apply for a charter . . ." Very Good Turkish Original typescript document with manuscript autograph writings and signature by Lütfi Kirdar (as Governor of Istanbul Lütfi Kirdar). 27,5x17,5 cm. Sent to Mustafa Kunur, who was 'Nahiye Müdür' of Kemerburgaz (district of Istanbul). In Turkish (modern Turkish with Latin script). 1 p. Including a celebration on Kunur's logistics services for the army. Lütfi Kirdar was born in 1887 in Kirkuk. He comes from a rooted and a well-known family 'Kirdarzâdes' of Kirkuk. After completing his primary and secondary education in Kirkuk and high school education in Baghdad, he came to Istanbul in 1908 and entered the Faculty of Medicine. After the Balkan War, Kirdar joined the war voluntarily and after the war he graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the Darülfünûn -i.e. IIstanbul Üniversitesi- (1917). With the outbreak of World War I, he joined the army. Kirdar who was participating in the National Struggle, received the Independence War Medal. After the War of Independence, in 1923, he specialized in eye diseases in Vienna and Munich. He returned to Turkey in 1924 and was appointed to the Directorate of Izmir Health. At his own request, he was appointed to the eye clinic of Izmir Memleket Hospital in 1933. In 1935 he became a member of parliament from Kütahya. In 1936, Manisa was appointed as mayor and after that in 1938, to Istanbul. He held this last post for 12 years. Istanbul Harbiye Sports and Exhibition Palace, Open-Air Theater, Inonu Stadium in Dolmabahce, Taksim Square, Taksim Excursion and Ataturk Boulevard were held during his period. In 1940, the Taksim Barracks was demolished. He was arrested on May 27th. He died of a heart attack on 17 February 1961 in Yassiada where he was tried. He was buried in Zincirlikuyu Cemetery after an funeral on 19 February 1961.

The register of Islamic endowments in the province of Ottoman Aidin, (Defter-i evkâf-i livâ-i Aydin) is an Ottoman archival document that kept in number 571 at the Archives of General Directorate Cadastre Survey of Turkey in Ankara. As far as we know, this manuscript written in Ottoman Turkish that prepared in the year of 1524 is unique and prepared by Hassa Chelebi (Çelebi) who was an official bureaucrat examining and recording of Islamic endowments in Aidin province by the Suleiman the Magnificence.

Thanks to his good knowledge of the country and its important characters, he was able to follow the progress of political, diplomatic and commercial developments since the accession of Sultan Abdulaziz. This study takes stock this evolution whose aim was to transform the Ottoman Empire into a modern state taking the example of the European model.

Often and incorrectly referred to as the 'Gallipoli Star' or 'Iron Half-Moon', my interest in the Harp Madalyasi (War Medal) , started a few years ago and I was immediately confronted with a myriad of unanswered questions due to the general lack of substantiated information on the subject. Luckily, I befriended other collectors interested in this award and eventually met the author in one of these online forums. First, let me say, that a printed reference on this subject was long overdue and I could not think of a better, more knowledgeable person, to bring this subject to light. The book briefly discusses the history of the Ottoman Empire and how it's military awards came into being, along with the European influence on design and purpose that led to the establishment of the War Medal. Various battles and campaigns are mentioned and examples of the various clasps often encountered on the War Medal ribbon are also shown. One of the book's highlights centers around the award regulations and amendments that applied, which are shown in great detail and reprinted with full translations. This is something many references overlook and often the collector has to rely on hearsay or other collector opinions, which often lead to confusion or erroneous statements as facts.

Mehmet Fuat Köprülü, aka Köprülüzade, who traced his descent from the illustrious Köprülü family, was a Turkish politician and historian, known for his contributions to Ottoman history, Turkish folklore and language.A founding member of the Democratic Party along with Celal Bayar, Adnan Menderes, and Refik Koraltan, Köprülü served under Menderes as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1950 to 1955 and briefly as Deputy Prime Minister in 1956. As a historian his works included Origins Of the Ottoman Empire, The Seljuks of Anatolia: Their History and Culture According to Local Muslim Sources and Islam in Anatolia After the Turkish Invasion: Prolegomena. He is also the founder of one of the perspectives which try to understand the rise of the Ottoman tribe and the direction of its expansion. A Mehmet Fuat Koprulu Scholarship Programme has recently been set up to provide funds for Turkish students to undertake PhD study at the University of Cambridge.
