A HUNTER'S ADVENTURES in the Great West
London: Hurst & Blackett 1871. First Edition. Leather_bound. Very Good. Full gilt-stamped 8vo sheep. 336pp. Frontispiece engraving "Bruin's Home" & small title-page engraving "Bull Moose Lake". Marbled endpapers. a.e.g. Raised bands with gilt-stamped labels. Deep gilt imprint on front cover of coat of arms of "Protestant Board of School Commissioners Montreal P.Q." An account of hunting & fishing in Montana Territory apparently just before the discovery of precious metals there & several years before Custer & the Little Big Horn. There is a little information on the Crow Indians. Includes remininscenes of other places. In the first chapter the author speaks depreciatingly of miners & the failure of a Christian nation to live up to Christian principles in their treatment of Indians. Gillmore also catagorizes North American Indians into three groups: Horse-Indians Timber-Indians & Fish-Indians & rates their qualities from "handsome honorable & brave" Timber-Indians to "unprepossessing debased & cowardly" Fish-Indians. He foresees the mineral wealth of the territory & the advent of miners "as a rule the most dissipated cruel and reckless people upon the face of the earth" to sign the "death-warrant" of the Indian. A very scarce book & not listed in Howes although a later book by Gillmore is listed. Edgewear to covers & some darkening to same.
