The binding is rubbed and worn and is soiled from handling. Some fraying to the headcap. A sound copy with secure inner hinges. A pencil inscription on the front flyleaf reads "Presented to F. C. Decker by R. H. Decker Sep. 21st 1943" inscription has a big pencil "X" mark through it. Another inscription on the rear pastedown notes that R. H. Decker lived in Jonesboro TN. Text is a bit toned. Collates complete with 8 plates. The Decker family were noted mountain potters from Chucky Valley in eastern Tennessee operating Keystone Pottery. The author of the book Captain Ross Smith who was born in Jonesboro Jonesborough Tennessee in 1846. Smith did not fight in the Civil War. Early in life he obtained work on railroads and travelled through the southeast."Captain" is the title in the South for Conductor because according to the book the Conductors at the time were paid the same rate as the Captain in the U.S. Army. Ross spent his career as a railroad man and conductor of passenger train "No. 1" that operated between Bristol and Knoxville. He recounts his family history in Washington County TN as well as extensive experience on the rail lines. He devotes only about 10 pages or so to the Civil War but the perspective is interesting in that he was a teenager getting odd jobs and travelled extensively while avoiding forces on either side of the conflict but he worked on lines that delivered supplies mostly to Northern forces. He also gives special attention to how much items cost 40 cents for a gallon of oil what he got paid for different jobs and where he and various companions got food and sheltered during their travels. According to one source we've not found it in the book yet he later worked on the train that transported the prisoner ex-Presdent Jefferson Davis. Scarce. Not in Howes or Nevins. Appears in Broadfoot 5th Edition but not in Broadfoot 3rd or 4th Editions. <br/> <br/> Privately Printed hardcover

There is a remarkable literary quality about this diary with a dedicatory poem by William Cullen Bryant and quotes in the text by Owen Meredith and Shakespeare and one original poem of 34 lines. Debates and proceedings of the Republican and Democratic wings of the convention to make Minnesota's state constitution. A tempestuous battle had ensued over which party would control the convention as that party would dictate the provisions of the constitution and so arrange the formation of congressional and legislative districts that Senators and Representatives in Congress would be of that party's faith. The political control of Congress might depend on the outcome in the new state of Minnesota and so the whole country became interested in the election of delegates to Minnesota's Constitutional Convention. Agreement between the parties could not be reached and thus two separate conventions were convened. "The two conventions met daily. Their proceedings were uniformly orderly dignified and most interesting. Various important measures far reaching and influential in their character and nature were proposed in each convention and some of them adopted. In a few weeks after the rival conventions assembled the better judgement sound sense and devotion to the interests of the people among the members generally asserted themselves." Private conferences were held and at last Democratic leaders conferred with leading Republicans and on the 28th of August 1857 agreement was reached upon the entire draft of the constitution the printed version of which appears at the back of each volume and in the case of the Democratic Proceedings may be the earliest appearance of the constitution in print see Minnesota in Three Centuries 1908 III 42-48. The book and its contents are in mostly clean bright condition. The text pages are clean and bright. The dust jacket has several small to smallish edge tears nicks and spots of rubbing and wear especially to the spine ends and corners. "Originally Balboa Island was little more than a mudflat surrounded by swampland. Today's Newport Harbor emerged only after dredging millions of tons of silt. In the late 1860s James McFadden and his brother Robert purchased a large portion of the future site of Newport including the oceanfront of Newport Beach much of Balboa Peninsula and the sandbars that were to become Balboa Island and Newport Harbor's other islands. They immediately began subdividing and selling their property. They established a successful fishing wharf on the Balboa Peninsula and the townsite of Newport Beach. In the late 1860s the bay was used as a landing to load hides tallow hay and other goods for export. In September 1870 Captain Samuel S. Half-bound brown Morocco leather with raised bands gilt titles and spine decorations and brown linen cloth over boards marbled endpapers preliminaries on laid paper top edge gilting printed on bright coated paper. Presentation copy to the Veterans of the Seventh Regiment by the New York Historical Society with presentation bookplate on pastedown. At the turn of the 20th Century James Reuel Smith made bicycle excursions across New York City photographing and chronicling its springs and well. In 1938 three years after his death the New York Historical Society published this volume of his pictures and observations. Wear to the leather at the edges some rub at the spine mild creasing to a few page corners Veterans of the Seventh Regiment stamp on pastedown along with the same text handwritten boldly in marker else a near fine example of a scarce book. Howes W 615. Brown blind-decorated cloth gilt lettering. Cloth quite faded with frayed extremities underboards exposed at corners soiling and dampstaining to rear cover a bit cocked. Modest dampstaining to upper fore-edge corner of all interior leaves present but not pronounced. All leaves firm modestly toned with little foxing evident. Former owner signature in pencil on front flyleaf. Portion of map present at rear mostly lacking showing portions of western Missouri southern Iowa and "Indian Territory" later Oklahoma to the west. Rear pastedown also contains original bookseller's tag from Chicago Book Store S. F. Gale & Co. Chicago.
