Co-operative Land and Improvement Company Leroy Marion County Florida 8 Page Promotional Tract
Leroy Marion County Florida: Co-operative Land and Improvement Company Book. Very Good. Newsprint. 11" w x 14" h. SCARCE 8 page promotional newspaper illustrated. Very Good light soiling small tears at fold edges. No date circa 1888-1891 the only copy located at WorldCat at the University of Virginia gives a date of 1888 and last date found in articles in the paper is 1887. However the article on subscribing to the Leroy Florida News notes that it started publishing April 15 and Library of Congress shows that the paper was only published in 1891. Adding to the credibility of an 1891 date the UVA copy notes a map illustration and the illustrations in this copy are all of buildings. "The former town of Leroy seems to have a checkered past. Some say it was only a "paper town." Others maintain it was a land fraud deal perpetuated by northerners and marketed across the US and abroad. Historical documents point to a thriving community with a post office businesses a school farms and more. The fact is Leroy was all of those things before it disappeared. Collection of Photographs of Cars Trucks and Specialty Vehicles from a Pasadena Rental Car Company that Catered to the Movie Industry in the 1920s
Twenty-seven 27 8†x 10†photographs showcasing high-end vehicles for rent from the Iowa Garage in Pasadana California owned by former race car mechanic Eugene Lajunie b. 1885. Each photo is accompanied by a typed caption giving the model number color some specifications and the price per day to rent with a driver. Vehicles include many touring cars and cabriolets made by Renault Packard and Daimler; a Sunbeam roadster town cars taxis a limousine army trucks a French truck mounted with an anti-aircraft gun and several remarkable “camera cars†made with front or rear-mounted platforms to hold movie cameras and their operators. Rental prices ranged from $35/day for a camera car to $75/day for the Sunbeam Roadster or a 1926 Renault cabriolet. Many of the cars are “posed†in front of beautiful homes on tree-lined Pasadena streets. These photographs would originally have been in a sales catalogue or album and there are remnants of the original pages on which they were mounted on the back of each one. Some have the original typed captions taped to the back others are accompanied by recent copies of those captions. These photographs were acquired as a group from the granddaughter of Eugene Lajunie and we believe the family made the modern captions to replace damaged ones from the original album. The images themselves are all original and in very good condition. Born in France Lajunie emigrated to the United States to work as the personal mechanic of racecar driver George Heath. Heath won first Vanderbilt Cup race with Lajunie at his side in 1904. Lajunie later lived in Davenport Iowa before moving to Pasadena and opening his Iowa Garage on South Fair Oaks avenue. There he personally repaired restored and equipped the vehicles he rented to Hollywood studios. unknown

Collection of 15 Photographs of or by Father Bernard Hubbard "The Glacier Priest
Very good. Fifteen black and white photographs of which thirteen measure 4 7/8" x 3 ¾"; the other two measure 4" x 6". Four of the smaller size images have typed descriptions attached to them. Bernard R. Hubbard was a Jesuit priest explorer photographer and lecturer who did much to familiarize Americans with the beauty of the Alaska and the lives of the region's native peoples. Born in San Francisco in 1888 Hubbard studied at several West Coast colleges and universities before heading to Austria where he was ordained as a priest and also became enamored of the mountains. After seeing him head off on climbing expeditions in every spare moment his fellow theology students dubbed him "Der Gletscher Pfaffer" The Glacier Priest a sobriquet he would adopt proudly for the rest of his days. Though his "day job" was head of the Department of Geology at Santa Clara University for nearly 30 years Hubbard conducted annual summer expeditions to Alaska and the Arctic. He funded this work and also supported Catholic missions in Alaska by touring the country upon his return delivering lectures--illustrated with photographs and film he shot himself--to large and enthusiastic audiences. Although his expeditions had scientific and anthropologic goals scholars have generally pronounced them to be of little scientific consequence. Nonetheless Hubbard had charm showmanship and photographic talent on his side. According to historian Mary Jane Miller Screening Culture p. 115 "Hubbard became a household name after his experiences and photographs were published in the Saturday Evening Post in 1932. By 1937 he was the highest paid lecturer in the United States." The photos colelcted here show Father Hubbard posed with his ice axe examining pictographs hiking with companions over glaciers and snow-covered terrain posing with totem poles "found some distance back from the coast in south-east Alaska." Two images do not include people but are beautiful shots of an unidentified Alaskan glacier and icefield. unknown books
