Peter Lesley the State Geologist of Pennsylvania and President of the American Institute for the Advancement of Science. Susan was the daughter of Judge Joseph Lyman of Northampton. The first printing of this memoir was limited to only 100 copies and titled MEMOIRS OF MRS. ANNE J. LYMAN in 1876. This edition was re-titled RECOLLECTIONS OF MY MOTHER: it omits some letters from the first edition but includes anecdotes and letters new to this edition. These are extensive New England memoirs concentrated on Northampton Mass. The Illustrations include an actual mounted photograph of a painted portrait of Judge Lyman. First edition; 6 1/4 x 4 3/4; pp. 9 8-35 1; brown wraps printed in black; a few small spots to margins of front wrap and a minor puncture to back wrap; a small nick to tail of spine and light wear to edges and corners; overall in very good condition. William Pryor Letchworth 1823 - 1910 was a businessman and a philanthropist renwoned for his charitable actions. He was very successful in the "malleable iron" business but he also took very seriously his work for the New York State Board of Charities first appointed to it in 1873 and later serving as its President from 1878 until 1897. He was credited with managing to inspect every alms house orphanage poor-house and juvenile reformatory in the state and recommending and implementing various improvements including the removal of all children under the age of 2 from such institutions and co-founding the Craig Colony - a state epileptic hospital. The booklet contained his lengthy address delivered at the 1884 National Conference of Charities and Correction which touched on the subjects of women and children under institutional custody juvenile offenders treatments for the insane financial accounting of various boards etc. Matthews, Northrup & Co. hardcover books

"20" in ink at upper right-hand corner of title page. Enoch Lewis 1776-1856 was a Pennsylvania Quaker and a mathematician who edited several mathematical works and published several textbooks including one on spherical projections. He was an abolitionist establishing the monthly journal African Observer and taking an active role in the Underground Railroad in Chester County Pa. In this pamphlet he examines another issue of concern to the Society of Friends that of legal and judicial oaths which Friends refused to take. Very scarce. "The book is the work of Henry Lewis an American artist then living in Germany; originally written in English Lewis' text was translated into German by one George B. Douglas. The first 72-pp. of an English edition are known but only discovered in 1951. The present volume reproduces that English fragment but the bulk of it is a retranslation from the German version."
