PAYMENT OF BOUNTIES TO VOLUNTEERS: A PARTIALLY PRINTED CIVIL WAR DOCUMENT consisting of a bond financing payment of bounties to soldiers who volunteered to fight in the Civil War SIGNED by LUCIUS ROBINSON as New York State Comptroller.
Albany June 15 1865. 1865. Very good. - An attractive 7-1/4 inch high by 12 inch wide document on creamy white stock. The bond issued to the County of Cortland for the amount of $1000 was issued by the State of New York to pay bounties to entice men to volunteer as soldiers in the Civil War. Issued by the comptrollers office and redeemable on January 1st 1867 the text is handsomely contained within a decorative frame with the attractive State of New York's pictorial vignette illustration boldly engraved at the top. The sum is penned in within a decorative frame at top left and the bond number "No. 4583" is printed within the decorative frame at top right. The year in which the bond will be considered redeemable is printed in red at the center. The comptroller's seal is boldly embossed in blind at bottom left. Printed by the "National Bank Note Co. New York" the bond is signed by New York State comptroller Lucius Robinson at bottom right. Barely noticeable at first glance cancellation cross marks are cut along the right and left sides. The document is folded vertically several times with slight creasing to the edges. Very good. <p>A program of cash bonuses paid to entice volunteers to enlist in the army through much of America's history the Bounty System was much abused particularly during the Civil War. While bounties were initially paid in land as well as cash in the years of the Indian Wars the American Revolution the War of 1812 and the Mexican War only cash payments were distributed during the Civil War. Abuses led to bounties being abolished by the Selective Service Act of 1917.<p>Lucius Robinson 1810-1891 served as New York State Comptroller from 1862 to 1865. A member of New York State's Constitutional Convention in 1871-72 he was a director of the Erie Railroad and briefly served as the railroad's president while Peter H. Watson traveled in Europe. An opponent of Tammany Hall Robinson was elected Governor of New York State in 1877 but Tammany leader John Kelly plotted to run against him in 1879 splitting the democratic vote such that Republican Alonzo B. Cornell won the Governorship with a lesser vote than his democratic opponents combined. Albany, June 15, 1865. unknown

Inner hinges are perfect. No owner's name or bookplate. Because it was printed on low quality paper the dust jacket is brittle. It has chips at the top edge and along the spine folds that have been reinforced with a liberal application of scotch tape mostly on the blank side. NOT price clipped $2.50. The jacket is now protected by a removable Brodart clear plastic sleeve. Illustrated with drawings by Josephine McKittrick and numerous photographs and portaits. Endpaper maps of Colorado's Gunnison River and the North Fork Valley. This is Rockwell's first book a history of west-central Colorado. Contains some info on Billy the Kid including his escape from the Lincoln County Jail. It has chapters on Cow-Land Aristocrats and Cow-Towns with much on the early-day cattle king Sam Hartman with his photo. Other sections deliver interesting accounts of early settlers; outlaws and gunmen; early railroads; Indian relations mail carriers on horseback "The Last Cowboy" Tede Hice; etc. Appendix pp. 197-207 reprints three treaties with the Ute Indians 1868 1873 1880. Dr. Roemer is known as the "Father of Texas Geology." His travels in Texas from 1845-1847 were primarily for geological study but he also observed the plants Indians and German settlements. He traveled from Galveston to San Antonio to Fredericksburg to Glen Rose. His travelogue was published back in Germany in 1849. Oswald translated the first English edition in 1935 and it was reprinted again in 1967 and 1983. In 1943 She Donated The Home To Found A Permanent Building For The Pasadena Art Museum Notable For Its Landmark Exhibitions Of Contemporary Art Circa 1958-1975. Overall Condition. "Arnold R. Rojas 1896 - 1988 has the distinction of being the most celebrated chronicler of the life and lore of California's Vaqueros. He did this in a series that he didn't start publishing until he was into his mid-50s his first "The California Vaqueros" in 1953. Ultimately he would publish seven books over the years the final one being "Vaqueros and Buckaroos" in 1979.
