3 April 1840; on letterhead of the Literary Association of the Friends of Poland Sussex Chambers Duke Street St. James's. 12mo 3 pp. Text clear and complete. Worn and aged with pinholes and unobtrusive repair to closed tears. The 'kindness' Wyld has 'always shewn to the Poles' makes Stuart sure that he will attend to his recommendation of 'Captain Thadeus Grubski one of the Polish Refugees who bears a very high character'. 17 January no year on paper watermarked ‘JOYNSON 1860’; on Berkeley Castle letterhead. See the two men’s entries in the Oxford DNB. For the context see the 1863 pamphlet ‘Clare versus the Queen’ in the slug to which John Clare 1820-1885 is described as ‘THE KING OF METAL SHIP BUILDERS’. 3pp 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition lightly aged and worn with folds. Docketed ‘Fitzhardinge / Lord -’. Signed ‘Fitzhardinge’ sic. In a difficult hand. Begins: ‘My Dear Romaine / I have to appear as a Witness on behalf of the Admiralty in the case of “Clare’s Petition of Right to the Queen†in which I am suitor.’ He denies the claim that he has ‘infringed Patents’ with regard to ‘Gun Boats’ ‘and I do not even remember having ever seen the Man or any body on his behalf’. He asks Romaine to help him refresh his memory with regard to communications ‘in which my name appears either at White Hall or Somerset House’: ‘at present I am prepared to swear total ignorance of the Man and his Gun Boats’. The majority of the grievances were directed at the authoritarian regime of Lord Dalhousie as governor of Lower Canada and Governor-in-Chief of British North America 1820-28 when he was recalled. Included are grievances relating to Dalhousies establishment of a new Quebec Gazette his censure of Sir Francis Burton for having sanctioned a Bill of Supply his dismissal of militia officers and exercise of intimidation during elections his dismissal of justices of the peace and the unfair manner of jury selection. "Among other things the Montreal petitioners complained that contrary to the laws of England juries both grand and petty and both King's Bench and Quarter Sessions were being drawn exclusively from the town of Montreal rather than from the district at large. The committee chaired by Denis-Benjamin Viger concluded that this practice of jurors being "selected or as it were packed - summoned exclusively from among the inhabitants of a particular place or from a particular class - cannot be more compatible with liberty than it is with the rules of impartial justice. It is repugnant to every principle of our government and can only tend to the overthrow of the constitution of the country
.The executive's control over the process of selecting juries became for the Patriotes yet another symbol of despotism and of the attempted exclusion of canadiens from their democratic rights given that they predominated in the countryside; a number of highly political jury trials for libel and sedition did nothing to help matters. The controversy only began to die down from 1830 when James Kempt ordered that jurors be drawn from the body of the district; the denouement came in 1832 when the legislature adopted a law regulating the qualification and selection of jurors

Paris: Chez Lotlin/Chez La Combe 1770. Hardcover. Good. Instructions for Lords and their Valets". Possibly a 1st edition; the 'Approbation' is dated 1769. This is extremely scarce; we haven't heard of another copy. I had no luck finding the identity of Monsieur "R" but I don't read French. Good plus in a very old binding possibly contemporary. Full leather finished with a marbling effect boards slt. bowed gilt borders gilt title and many devices on spine marbled endpapers red chalk edges. Corners worn and bumped spine ends worn external front hinge weak so that leather is beginning to split. 2" near the top. The text has been trimmed for the binding but the margins were quite large. The tail of a trimmed-off owner's name appears at the top of the title page. The 18th-century marbled paper is quite beautiful; the binder was a bit clumsy and there are creases in both pastedowns. A splay of foxing on the half-title page but nowhere else. Text pages in French very clean and bright. Printed by Lottin one of the more prolific publishers of 18th-century France. 278 pp. An interesting guide to recommended behavior published just 19 years before the Revolution. <br/> <br/> Chez Lotlin/Chez La Combe hardcover

Ci definiamo «democratici» e lamentiamo pretese «non democratiche» in tanti comportamenti di persone e istituzioni. Eppure ingiustizia, sopraffazione e oppressione dilagano. Non sempre riconosciute, spesso incontrastate. Come mai? Il libro risponde a questa domanda, offrendo un quadro articolato della democrazia reale – del suo stato di salute al tempo della «globalizzazione neoliberista» – e indagando la costellazione di insidie e di patologie che da più parti l’assediano: dal populismo alla retorica dell’antipolitica, dalla tecnocrazia all'ineffabile meritocrazia, dalla corruzione al moralismo politico. Ma la critica non è fine a se stessa. Rielaborando i contributi teorici di due protagonisti della scena filosofica contemporanea (Habermas e Castoriadis), si apre, in positivo, alla costruzione di un modello di comunità sociale capace di esprimere il senso più autentico del principio democratico. L’idea è che la democrazia non consista soltanto nell'osservanza di procedure formali basate sul principio di maggioranza, bensì anche nel rispetto di elevati standard di giustizia sociale, che vincolino gli esiti della scelta politica a precisi criteri di correttezza, coerenza ed equità. Prende così forma una teoria radicale della democrazia. Nella quale l’esercizio dell’autorità coincide essenzialmente con la pratica dell’autonomia collettiva; il corpo sociale definisce in concreto regole della convivenza compatibili con i princìpi di libertà ed eguaglianza; e la funzione del diritto non consiste tanto nell'organizzare la forza, quanto nel porre limiti invalicabili alla violenza.
