Contents are almost like new. ; First printing. 272pp. Index. Almost 9-1/2" Tall. Hardcover. Maroon cloth spine, bright gold lettering . HISTORY. Against the bac kground of a century of wars, revolution, and uneasy peace, Kennan advances his thoughts on a broad front: how the individual's quest for power can transform a government into a confusion of ambition, rivalry, and suspicion; how a nation's size can create barriers between the rulers and ruled; why America must first set its own house in order before it can become a beacon to others. To address problems that defy quick political solution, Kennan here boldly lays down a blueprint for a Council of State, a nonpolitical, permanent advisory board that would stand alongside yet apart from government policy makers, with the prestige to he heard 'above the cacophony of political ambitions. KERKERING, JOHN D.
The Poetics of National and Racial Identity in Nineteenth-Century American Literature
Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2003. orig.boards. 24x16xm, xiii,351 pp. Series: Cambridge Studies in American Literature and Culture ; [139]. Some rubbing. Cover corner bumped & creased. Good. ¶ Contents: The Poetics of National Identity: 1. 'We are five and forty': meter and national identity in Sir Walter Scott; 2. 'Our sacred union', ' our beloved Apalachia': nation and genius loci in Hawthorne and Simms; Part II. The Poetics of Racial Identity: 3. 'Of me and of mine': the music of racial identity 4. 'Blood will tell': literary effects and the diagnosis of racial instinct Conclusion: the conversation of identities. ["Examining the literary history of racial and national identity in nineteenth-century America, John Kerkering argues that writers such as DuBois, Hawthorne and Whitman used poetic effect to emphasize the distinctiveness of certain groups against a diffuse social landscape. Kerkering tells the story of how poetry helped define America as a nation before helping to define America into distinct racial categories. He concludes that through a shared reliance on formal literary effects, national and racial identities become related elements of a single literary history" - Publisher's description].

KIDD, COLIN
Subverting Scotland's Past: Scottish Whig Historians and the Creation of an Anglo-British Identity 1689-1830
Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, (2003). reprint. orig.wrappers. 23x15cm, xiii,322 pp. PAPERBACK.. Minor rubbing. VG. ¶ This book examines how the dramatic intellectual developments of the Scottish Enlightenment undermined a patriotic reading of Scotland's history, and shows how this had long-term consequences in the failure of the nineteenth-century Scottish intelligentsia to mount a nationalist movement comparable to the romantic nationalisms of other European peoples. The volume sheds fresh light on several important areas of Scottish history and literature: on the parliamentary Union with England of 1707, the ideological conflicts between whigs and Jacobites, and the literary mythmaking of James Macpherson's Ossian and Sir Walter Scott's Waverley novels. It also addresses the broader questions of the impact of the Scottish Enlightenment on British political culture, and the enigma of British national identity itself" - Publisher's description.

KIMMERLING, BARUCH
The Invention and Decline of Israeliness: State, Society, and the Military
Berkeley [CA], Univ. of California Press, (2001). orig.boards. 24x15cm, x,268 pp.. Minor rubbing. VG. dustwrapper. ¶ This thought-provoking book, the first of its kind in the English language, re-examines the fifty-year-old nation of Israel in terms of its origins as a haven for a persecuted people and its evolution into a multi- cultural society. Arguing that the mono-cultural regime built during the 1950's is over, Baruch Kimmerling suggests that the Israeli state has divided into seven major cultures. These seven groups, he contends, have been challenging one other for control over resource distribution and the identity of the polity. Kimmerling, one of the most prominent social scientists and political analysts of Israel today, relies on a large body of sociological work on the state, civil society, and ethnicity to present an overview of the construction and deconstruction of the secular-Zionist national identity. He shows how Israeliness is becoming a prefix for other identities as well as a legal and political concept of citizen rights granted by the state, though not necessarily equally to different segments of society" - Publisher's description.

KOHLBRUGGE, J.H.F.
De inlandsche beweging en de onrust in Indië. Voordrachten gehouden in Oktober 1927 bij de opening der lessen voor de Indologische faculteit der Rijksuniversiteit te Utrecht
. Utrecht, A. Oosthoek, 1927. 83 pp. Modern cloth binding. Series of lectures given in Utrecht after the riots that took place in Java and Sumatra in 1927. The author blames ethical politics and the colonial government for being 'too soft', and maintains that the nationalist movement in Indonesia could only emerge because 'too much useless education' was spent on the local population. The text gives a rare and direct insight into right-wing colonial thinking that existed in the Netherlands during the 1920's (and that would last for decades after).
