‎London 1864 I.L.N. Single sheet 2 woodcut engraved plates 28.5 x 40.5 cm. very clean nice example. This is an excellent early example of foreigners in Japan and of their influence on Japanese dress fashion and modes. The top plate shows what appears to be a two-horse drawn wagon with four foreigners in the rear driven by a bearded foreigner. Following the wagon is another military officer with his long sword on a horse. He leads a small contingent of horse-mounted cavalry bearing what possibly could be British flags. In the wagon is a military officer with his flat hat and two other civilians. A large crowd of Japanese onlookers and a dog run along side the whole procession. A Japanese farm house is in the background. the caption reads: DRIVING THE GOROGIO ON THE TOKAIDO ROAD YOKOHAMA. The second is an excellent capture of the varied costumes and clothes worn just after the Japanese were exposed to foreign clothing and fashion trends. From the left we see a Japanese drummer a man shouldering a bayoneted foreign rifle two Japanese men in long jackets trousers one wears knee-length boots two other Japanese men wear long jackets and the four sport double Japanese Samurai swords while three other men wear more traditional Japanese clothing and swords. Nicely done. While there is not indication of the artist's name we can assume it was the I.L.N.'s Special Artist in Japan Charles Wirgman who often did not sign his sketches. . hardcover‎
