Nice copy (albeit to wartime production standards) of the first UK edition. Detailed account of the leading American war correspondent's service from 1937 to 1941. Published simultaneously with the US edition (titled 'Freely to Pass'). The UK edition is scarce in this condition. Enser, p.327‎

‎WINN Godfrey‎

‎On Going to the Wars. SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY WITH A.L.s‎

‎8vo., First Edition, with frontispiece and 20 plates on 19, neat signature on front free endpaper, moderate offsetting from cutting to frontispiece and title; original blue cloth, backstrip lettered in brown, covers moderately faded, backstrip heavily sunned (but all lettering wholly legible), a good, clean copy. A PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR WITH HIS SIGNED HOLOGRAPH INSCRIPTION ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER. LOOSELY INSERTED ARE (1) AN A.L.s FROM THE AUTHOR ON DAILY EXPRESS STATIONERY, (2) A SIGNED PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT OF WINN; (3) A CUTTING FROM THE SUNDAY EXPRESS NEWSPAPER OF MARCH 29 1942 CONTAINING AN EXTENDED BYLINED ARTICLE BY WINN. THE PIECE IS ENTITLED 'WORKER OF MIRACLES' AND DESCRIBED IN MOVING FASHION WINN'S ATTENDANCE AT AN OPERATION TO SKIN GRAFT A BADLY BURNED AIRMAN [THE SURGEON PORTRAYED MAY WELL HAVE BEEN MCINDOE HIMSELF]. The field of plastic and restorative surgery held a constant fascination for Winn, who would cover this topic several times during the war years. Winn's first book of WWII includes twenty-nine essays arranged in four sections: 'The Air Force', 'Naval Occasions', 'The Army' and 'Home Front'. One of Britain's leading WWII and post-war journalists, Godfrey Winn (1906-1971) enlisted as an anonymous ordinary seaman after three years as a war correspondent. After training at Ganges and service abroad HMS CUMBERLAND he was invalided from the service. He then joined the Merchant Navy and served aboard POZARICA throughout PQ17. His well-known account of this ill-fated convoy forms a separate work. After the war he resumed his career as journalist, principally with the Express Newspapers Group, and developed parallel careers as novelist and actor. A SPLENDID ASSOCIATION COPY DEEPLY EVOCATIVE OF THE EARLY YEARS OF WWII. Enser p.350.‎

‎Boswell's Column. Being his Seventy Contributions to 'The London Magazine' under his Pseudonym 'The Hypochondriack' from 1777 to 1783 here First Printed in Book Form in England. Introduction and Notes by Margery Bailey.‎

‎8vo., First Edition thus, with a frontispiece and 3 plates; cloth, gilt back, a very good, clean copy in the dustwrapper.‎

‎DIMBLEBY Richard‎

‎The Frontiers are Green. A Story of the Men who fought their way to Europe, through Deserts, the Mountains and the Valleys of ten Countries. BRIGHT, CLEAN COPY IN DUSTWRAPPER‎

‎8vo., First Edition, with endpaper maps; cloth, a very good, bright, clean copy in dustwrapper. The famous broadcaster's account of his service as war correspondent. SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION. Enser, p.273.‎

‎LOW David‎

‎Low's Autobiography. IN UNCLIPPED DUSTWRAPPER‎

‎8vo., First Edition, with portrait frontispiece and numerous illustrations (a number full-page) in the text, some mild offsetting from fold-ins to free endpapers; grey cloth, backstrip lettered in white and black, a very good, bright, clean copy in unclipped dustwrapper, the latter with small loss (just affecting lettering) at head of backstrip and lightly browned on (predominantly white) rear panel‎

‎SWINNERTON Frank‎

‎A London Bookman. IN DUSTWRAPPER‎

‎8vo., First Edition, on laid paper, some mild offsetting from fold-ins to free endpapers, fore-edges a little dusty; original red buckram, backstrip with paper label, uncut, a near fine copy in unclipped, lightly age-soiled dustwrapper. Collects numerous articles and essays originally penned by Swinnerton as the London letter to the New York 'Bookman' between 1920 and 1927. Very elusive in anything like this condition.‎

‎LOW David‎

‎Low's Political Parade. With Colonel Blimp. UNUSUALLY BRIGHT, CLEAN COPY OF A TRUE PRE-WAR CLASSIC‎

‎Oblong 4to., First Edition thus, with many full-page illustrations (one cartoon partly and neatly coloured by a child); original pictorial boards, cloth back, front board (which is largely white) very lightly age-soiled else a very good, clean copy of a work increasingly hard to find in this condition. Of all David Low's work, this is perhaps the undisputed classic. Some opt instead for Low's War Cartoons (1941) which undoubtedly reflects the spirit of the times; it seems to us, however, that the present work is to be preferred simply because in covering the years 1932-35 it embraces precisely the period which gave Low the opportunity to sharpen his barb in the face of what seemed to him both government and public apathy. The creation of Colonel Blimp alone makes this a true classic of pre-war illustration. Horne, p.296 et seq.‎

‎COLLIER Richard‎

‎The Warcos. The War Correspondents of World War Two. NEAR FINE COPY IN UNCLIPPED DUSTWRAPPER‎

‎8vo., First Edition, with plates; red cloth, gilt back, a near fine copy in unclipped dustwrapper.‎

‎WAUGH Evelyn‎

‎Scoop: A Novel about Journalists. IN FULL MOROCCO‎

‎8vo., First Edition, on laid paper, half-title and title lightly spotted; handsomely bound in full burgundy crushed morocco, sides with gilt frame border, back with raised bands, second and fourth compartments lettered and ruled in gilt, all other compartments tooled in gilt, gilt top, gilt edges, hand-made endpapers, ribbon marker, custom-made slip-case, a most attractive copy ideal as a gift or for presentation.‎

‎ORWELL George‎

‎Reportage. [Illustrated with archive photography.] NEAR FINE COPY IN PUBLISHER'S SLIP-CASE‎

‎5 vols., 8vo., First Edition thus, with frontispieces, plates and maps; pictorial boards, backstrips lettered in black, grey endpapers, a near fine copy in publisher's blocked slip-case. Classic collection of Orwell's non-fiction work. The set comprises: Down and Out in Paris and London. Introduced by Michael Foot; Homage to Catalonia; My Country Right or Left, and other selected Essays and Journalism; Funny, but not Vulgar, and other selected Essays and Journalism; The Road to Wigan Pier. SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION.‎

‎LOW David‎

‎Low's War Cartoons. IN THIS CONDITION, A RARE SURVIVAL‎

‎Oblong 4to., First Edition thus, with full-page cartoons throughout; original pictorial boards printed in red and black, cloth back lettered in white, a near fine copy of a work increasingly hard to find in anything like this condition. Of all David Low's work this is arguably the undisputed classic, covering as it does the first three years of WWII. Some opt instead for Low's Political Parade (1936) which embraces the years 1932-35, the period during which Low shapened his barb in the face of what seemed to him both government and public apathy. EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION. Horne, p.296 et seq.‎
