Alors qu?il etait d?usage de se rendre en Italie depuis la Renaissance, son livre etait le premier a imposer une autre destination culturelle aux amateurs d?art. A ce titre, il a connu un succes considerable, ne s?eteignant qu?a l?epoque napoleonienne en raison du nombre important d?oeuvres disparues ou deplacees. A cet egard, l?ouvrage de Descamps conserve une importance unique, car il fournit un etat des lieux du patrimoine visible dans la Flandre et le Brabant jusqu?au XVIIIe siecle, avant les trois evenements qui le bouleverserent a jamais. Il y eut, d?abord, les edits autrichiens supprimant l?ordre des Jesuites en 1773, puis les couvents en 1783, qui aboutirent tous deux a des ventes massives d?oeuvres d?art ; il y eut, ensuite, les saisies effectuees par les troupes francaises de la Republique en 1794. Par ces depouillements successifs, le guide ecrit par Descamps pour une banale vocation touristique est devenu un document irremplacable que l?edition critique vise a actualiser et a enrichir. Celle-ci donne, en effet, les moyens de visualiser cet etat originel du patrimoine belge decrit par l?auteur grace aux nombreuses illustrations et aux notes fournissant les localisations actuelles des oeuvres. Un index complete ces elements en repertoriant la production personnelle des artistes cites par Descamps afin de contribuer a une meilleure connaissance de chacun d?entre eux. Gaetane Maes est Maitre de conferences habilitee a diriger des recherches, et elle enseigne l?Histoire de l?Art des Temps modernes a l?universite de Lille. Specialiste des echanges artistiques entre la France et les anciens Pays-Bas (Flandre et Hollande), elle a notamment publie 'De l?expertise a la vulgarisation au siecle des Lumieres. Jean-Baptiste Descamps (1715-1791) et la peinture flamande, hollandaise et allemande' (Brepols, 2016). Elle est egalement l?auteur de nombreux articles sur l?historiographie des peintres et les fonctions sociales de l?art aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siecles.

Questa stampa a colori meticolosamente realizzata riproduce un dipinto a olio di Jean-Frédéric Schall, un artista meglio conosciuto per le sue scene pastorali e vagamente erotiche. Durante la Rivoluzione francese (1789-99), il mercato delle stampe a colori di lusso declinò, poiché i soggetti stuzzicanti e i segni del lusso erano considerati immorali. Quando gli atteggiamenti si rilassarono intorno al 1800, stampatori come Descourtis realizzarono alcune stampe a colori usando piastre multiple per stratificare inchiostri colorati come avevano fatto prima della Rivoluzione. This meticulously crafted color print reproduces an oil painting by Jean-Frédéric Schall, an artist best known for his pastoral and mildly erotic scenes.During the French Revolution (1789–99), the market for deluxe color prints declined, as titillating subjects and signs of luxury were considered immoral. When attitudes relaxed around 1800, printmakers like Descourtis made a few color prints using multiple plates to layer tinted inks as they had before the Revolution. Descourtis learned his method of multiple-plate color printing from Jean Frarnçois Janinet and like him used toolwork on the plate rather than aquatint, an acid immersion process used to create general areas of shading. Bürgerliche Innenraumszene mit junger Familie: Der Vater auf dem Sofa sitzend und Pfeife rauchend liest in der Zeitung, die Mutter betrachtet mit zwei Kindern ein Bilderbuch, ein drittes Kind steht zur Strafe in der Ecke; darüber an der Wand zwei Bilder, das eine zeigt Neapel mit Vesuv, das andere die Mole von Venedig.
o.J. Feder und Pinsel in Schwarz und Grau, mit schwarzer Tuschlinie an beiden Seiten und unten umrandet, auf gelblichem Velin. 22,7:33,1 cm. Provenienz: Antiquariat Robert Wölfle, München. Der Zeichner erlaubt uns einen wertvollen Einblick in die Alltagskultur zu Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts.

Herrenbildnis, nahezu Halbfigur eines auf einem Stuhl sitzenden Herren im Dreiviertelprofil nach rechts.
o.J. Bleistift und Kohle, teils gewischt, auf bräunlichem Velin. 48:37,3 cm. Achteckig geschnitten. Im ovalen Passepartoutausschnitt leicht gebräunt.- Feine Beobachtung der physiognomischen Merkmale sowie lebendige Charakterisierung zeichnen dieses aus der späteren Biedermeierzeit stammende Bildnis eines älteren Herrn aus. Zudem verrät die sichere Handhabung des Zeichenstiftes eine akademisch-fundierte Ausbildung des unbekannten Künstlers.
