‎This is the first monograph on the leading Utrecht painter Abraham Bloemaert (1566-1651) and his four sons who were painters and engravers. Bloemaert emerges as the foremost master of Utrecht, his stature comparable to that of his contemporaries Hendrick Goltzius and Cornelis van Haarlem.The output of Abraham Bloemaert is considerable: over 200 extant paintings and 625 prints designed by him and engraved by such masters as Matham, Saenredam, Bolswert and Cornelis and Frederick Bloemaert. His stylistic development during an activity of sixty years leads from mannerist works in the style of Spranger and the school of Haarlem to a realist approach, a Caravaggesque interlude, a stint at court art, and a final classicizing style. He treated a multitude of themes from the Old and New Testament, altarpieces, mythological works, landscapes, and genre pieces, with important contributions in each field. A fervent Catholic with Jesuit ties, he is the chief representative of Dutch Catholic art. Connected with his lifelong teaching activity are the 166 prints of the Tekenboek. The book opens with an introductory text which sums up the art of Abraham and places it into the context of his time. The bulk of the book is the catalogue which includes in chronological sequence all the extant and the firmly documented lost paintings by Abraham, with copies and imitations, and all the original engravings designed by him. They comprise the 380 engravings by Frederick and the 60 engravings by Cornelis Bloemaert designed by their father. Separately catalogued are 30 dated drawings which provide support for undated works, and 35 comparative works by other masters. This is followed by a complete study of the fine oeuvre of Hendrick Bloemaert, the closest continuator of Abraham, hitherto largely neglected: 120 extant paintings of genre scenes, religious themes, portraits, and mythologies. Finally a study of Adriaen Bloemaert. A large proportion of the works of Abraham and his sons are here studied and reproduced for the first time. The book closes with a fully documented biography of Abraham Bloemaert and his sons and a list of pupils; this portion is the work of the Utrecht historian Marten Jan Bok.‎

‎Sein Vater, der Maler und Professor Wilhelm Marc (1839- 1907), bringt dem Sohn die handwerklichen Grundlagen bei, doch steht eine Laufbahn als Künstler zunächst nicht zur Debatte. Vielmehr will Franz Marc Theologie studieren und einen geistlichen Beruf ergreifen. Obwohl er diesen Wunsch schließlich wieder verwirft und nach sei­nem Militärdienst ein Studium der Malerei an der Akade­mie der Bildenden Künste in München beginnt, wohnt seinem Schaffen immer eine religiöse Dimension inne. Nicht die äußere Gestalt, die er mit viel Symbolkraft vor allem in der Farbigkeit verändert, sondern das innere Wesen, die ?Tierseele?, steht im Zentrum der Bilder von Franz Marc, der während eines Studienaufenthalts in Paris mit der Malerei des Impressionismus in Berührung kommt. Sein bevorzugtes Motiv werden die Tiere, die er auf Anregung seines Freundes, des Schweizer Tiermalers Jean-Bloé Niestlé (1884-1942) nicht nach ihrer Natur, son­dern nach ihrem Wesen zu erfassen versucht. Franz Marc experimentiert mit verschiedenen Mal-Stilen und entdeckt vor allem die Farbgebung als sein persönliches Ausdrucksmittel. Die Freundschaft mit Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) und Gabriele Münter (1877-1962) ist durch eine intensive Auseinandersetzung mit der Far­benlehre geprägt. Gemeinsam mit Kandinsky begründet Franz Marc die avantgardistische Künstlergemeinschaft ?Der Blaue Reiter?, dem sich später auch noch Paul Klee (1879-1940) und August Macke (1887-1914) anschließen. Das Blaue Pferd verkörpert für Marc die Sehnsucht nach der Erlösung von dem irdischen Ballast, der sichtbaren Welt, die für den Künstler nichts weiter als eine Täuschung darstellt, die es zu überwinden gilt. An der Seite seines lebenslangen Freundes Macke besucht Marc in Paris den französischen Maler Robert Delaunay (1885-1941), dessen Orphischer Kubismus beide Künstler sehr beeindruckt. Mehr noch als Delaunay beeindruckt Franz Marc aber die Kunst des Futurismus, die er nach seiner Rückkehr aus Paris in einer Bonner Ausstellung bewundern kann. Es wird für Marc immer deutlicher, dass er sein Streben nicht in der Figuration erreichen kann, und seine Farben spren­gen ihre Formen ab. Franz Marc entfernt sich auch unter dem Eindruck der heraufziehenden Weltkriegswolken immer mehr vom Tiermotiv und wendet sich der Abstraktion zu. Die Natur, die ihn einst begeistert hat, empfindet er nun als hässlich und das rein geistige Sein als einziges Ziel des wahren Künstlers. Sein spätes Hauptwerk, die vierteilige Bilder147 folge ?Spielende Formen, Heitere Formen, Zerbrochene Formen und Kämpfende Formen? illustriert diese Ent­wicklung eindrucksvoll und hat die Kritik zu ganz unter­schiedlichen Interpretationen angeregt. Die düstere, resi­gnierende Grundstimmung, die Marcs Werk durchzieht, kulminiert in apokalyptischen Darstellungen lebloser Welten und bewegen den Künstler vielleicht auch zu sei­ner verhängnisvollen freiwilligen Meldung zum Kriegs­dienst. Franz Marc fiel am 4. März 1916 in Braquis bei Verdun. Er wurde nur 36 Jahre alt. Sein vielleicht berühmtestes Bild, der ?Turm der blauen Pferde?, war 1937 Teil der berüchtig­ten Ausstellung ?Entartete Kunst?. Es gilt heute als ver­schollen.‎

Bloemaert emerges as the foremost master of Utrecht, his stature comparable to that of his contemporaries Hendrick Goltzius and Cornelis van Haarlem.The output of Abraham Bloemaert is considerable: over 200 extant paintings and 625 prints designed by him and engraved by such masters as Matham, Saenredam, Bolswert and Cornelis and Frederick Bloemaert. His stylistic development during an activity of sixty years leads from mannerist works in the style of Spranger and the school of Haarlem to a realist approach, a Caravaggesque interlude, a stint at court art, and a final classicizing style. He treated a multitude of themes from the Old and New Testament, altarpieces, mythological works, landscapes, and genre pieces, with important contributions in each field. A fervent Catholic with Jesuit ties, he is the chief representative of Dutch Catholic art. Connected with his lifelong teaching activity are the 166 prints of the Tekenboek. The book opens with an introductory text which sums up the art of Abraham and places it into the context of his time. The bulk of the book is the catalogue which includes in chronological sequence all the extant and the firmly documented lost paintings by Abraham, with copies and imitations, and all the original engravings designed by him. They comprise the 380 engravings by Frederick and the 60 engravings by Cornelis Bloemaert designed by their father. Separately catalogued are 30 dated drawings which provide support for undated works, and 35 comparative works by other masters. This is followed by a complete study of the fine oeuvre of Hendrick Bloemaert, the closest continuator of Abraham, hitherto largely neglected: 120 extant paintings of genre scenes, religious themes, portraits, and mythologies. Finally a study of Adriaen Bloemaert. A large proportion of the works of Abraham and his sons are here studied and reproduced for the first time. The book closes with a fully documented biography of Abraham Bloemaert and his sons and a list of pupils; this portion is the work of the Utrecht historian Marten Jan Bok.‎
