Double sided folded sheet with colour printed maps of Taiwan and Hokkaido on either side 27.5 x 38.7 cm small holes at folds and several small closed tears now neatly repaired with archival quality paper a little browned at edges and folds. The double sided map features Taiwan and Hokkaido. The Taiwan map 1/1210000 scale records place names in Japanese characters; while the Hokkaido map 1/1950000 scale includes inset maps of Sakhalin and Kuril Islands. The map shows rail road and shipping routes and the border between the Russian half of Sakhalin and the Japanese colony of Karafuto in the south of the same island which had been drawn after Japan acquired Karafuto as part of the spoils of victory in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05. . Ownership signatures on front free end-paper and title. Very good. Rare. FIRST EDITION. Joannes Stobaeus compiled a valuable series of extracts from Greek authors for his son Septimius. The entire work was originally called the Four books of extracts sayings and precepts. The first book teaches physics in the wide sense which the Greeks assigned to this term. The third and fourth books explore ethics. In all Stobaeus quotes more than five hundred writers generally beginning with the poets and then proceeding to the historians orators philosophers and physicians. It is to Stobaeus that we owe many of our most important fragments of the dramatists particularly Euripides. Brunet V col. 545 notes that this edition brings together under a new title the Sententiae printed at Lyon in 1608 after the Franckfort edition of 1581 and the Eclogarum libri II reprinted after the edition of Anvers of 1571. This is the only edition to bring together the two titles; Encyclopaedia Britannica XXV p. 929 lists this as "editio princeps" but Adams lists many earlier editions of various modern editors; Graesse VI pp. 499-500. SUPERB CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH RED MOROCCO LAVISHLY GILT covers with wide dentelle frame composed of botanical elements and many small tools raised bands spines gilt in compartments with central floral sprig surrounded by acorns flowers stars and dots volute cornerpieces green morocco labels gilt turn-ins marbled endpapers all edges gilt. Front pastedowns with engraved bookplate of P. Dupont and with morocco heraldic book label. Gaskell 44. A breath of rubbing to extremities title page a little browned final page a bit foxed other trivial imperfections otherwise A CHOICE COPY internally clean smooth and bright and in a sparkling binding. This is the impressive quarto edition of a trio of great Roman love poets in a premier binding befitting the elegant printing. In a sheet dated 1760 which Baskerville issued appended to a specimen of his folio Bible the printer discusses his proposed "Baskerville Classics": "Many gentlemen" he says "have wished to see a sett of the Classicks . . . in the Manner Letter and Paper of the 'Virgil' already published" and he vows to print the same with the poetical classics first. The present items are from what turned out to be seven Baskerville quarto printings of the classics mostly done late in the printer's career but according to Reed bearing "the marks of unabated genius." These volumes says Reed would "suffice had Baskerville printed nothing else to distinguish him as the first typographer of his time." In the present works the stately typography the luxurious paper textured but feeling rather like vellum and the spacious design combine to give the reader a particularly gratifying feeling of strength and serenity. The extraordinarily smooth surface of our leaves provides a tactile experience not available from any other 18th century printer Bodoni included. The beautiful binding here is unsigned but is clearly the product of a first-rate workshop; while it is not uncommon to see a volume from the Baskerville quartos in a decorative contemporary binding the present one would have a place in the front row of any assemblage. In 1998 the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission released a report stating "Government safety experts continue to warn consumers to stop using Servel gas refrigerators manufactured between 1933 and 1957 due to the risk of carbon monoxide leakage in deadly quantities." A dozen remarkably decorated rooms featuring late 50s decor are pictured in full-page color photos promoting Armstrong floor coverings. Bright fast food colors pulsate through many of the rooms and two pages of the booklet are devoted to a vapid discussion of color values which "give a room a special atmosphere. For example reds and browns give a room warmth yellow makes it sunny and cheerful." etc. The homeowner is encouraged to "use the floor as your starting point and then build your entire color scheme around it." Choices painful to a contemporary palette are much in evidence. Asphalt tile is a featured product. The booklet in excellent condition provides an engrossing encounter with the aesthetics of the modern home at the moment when America was poised to enter the Space Age. The booklet in sepia tones features Montgomery Ward cabinets and appliances and a variety of floor plans. Eight basic types of kitchen are depicted in this Montgomery Ward catalogue; these designs are viewed from an angular overhead perspective "Your kitchen will resemble one of these". Modular steel floor and wall cabinets are shown as is a range of wood cabinetry. Attention is given to wall and floor coverings and illustrations are provided for various accessories fans a garbage disposal etc. There is a page depicting a 12 x 9½ foot floor space on which the prospective customer can ink in the desired appliances and cabinets this has been done in this booklet. Within the illustrated cover of the first of the "Pak's" two booklets features a colorful photo of a woman gluing handsome antique botanical prints to a lemon yellow wall. Turning the page we are informed in a headline: "This book is full of ideas." Indeed. In the 80 plus pages that follow these ideas pertaining to interior and exterior design are spewed forth right and left. A sampling of helpful ideas includes: "Tear out an ugly mantel"; "Remove bulkiness of dark chests by covering with wallpaper"; "Hang an odd window with plants." Tips from professional decorators are provided and individual rooms are then dealt with: Beauty For Living Rooms Gracious Dining Make Your Kitchen Work For You Ideas For Bathrooms Bedrooms male and female Little Things For Your Children Make Room For Fun Remodel Your Hall. Further sections round out the ideas for the interior; the discussion then shifts to ideas for the exterior of the home including chapters on remodeling interiors as well as exteriors. Numerous before-and-after images are provided documenting the handiwork. There follows an extensive pictorial inventory of building materials produced by the publisher The United States Gypsum Company. The booklet's final chapter focuses on landscaping. A green sheet representing lawn topped by a bit of blue sky is provided; a photo of the reader's home so the instructions state is to be placed on this sheet. The reader is then instructed to cut out printed images representing trees shrubs flower borders etc. appearing on the opposing page and next to place these on the green sheet in the vicinity of the photo of the home. This presumably addresses all landscaping issues. The artwork in this section of the book is signed by the noted Swiss graphic designer and poster artist Erik Nitsche. A separate booklet titled "Popular Home Planning File" follows the one discussed above. A sheet of perforated gummed paper with various detachable captioned tabs "Attic" "Roof and Chimney" "Closets" etc. is provided. These tabs are to be glued to the 20 plus file pages that follow. Clippings or pamphlets of interest to the home decorator/remodeler can be securely attached to the appropriate page utilizing perforated gummed flaps with which each file page is equipped. Intriguingly on the cover of this booklet is a photo of a well-coifed woman seated in a chair; she is surrounded by fabric swatches and color charts and is dutifully clipping something to stuff into the opened "Planning File" on her lap. The photo is framed in a black surround giving the unmistakable impression that the woman has been sucked into the harrowing Black Hole of Decorating. The "Condensed Trade Catalogue" provides a detailed illustrated introduction to Ejer's plumbing and fittings lines. The catalogue begins by introducing "bathroom group suggestions" featuring sink toilet and bath arrangements and then fills in the particulars with page after page of detailed specs. In addition to household units an extensive line of commercial products is pictured and described including drinking fountains wash sinks and side-by-side sink "batteries" plus perversely named wall and floor mounted toilets the Newark and urinals the Correcto. Formed steel cabinets and cast iron sinks plus wall and base cabinets and flat rim sinks provide a further component of the catalogue. Color illustration is used on one occasion only--to depict the "7 exciting colors" that are available "to beautify the bathroom"; these include "Pagan Red" "Tuscan Tan" and "Twilight Blue." The catalogue in very good condition provides quite a through guide to a variety of mid-century plumbing fixtures fittings and cabinetry for both domestic and commercial use. . A hint of wear to front joint and extremities but A VERY FINE COPY quite clean fresh and bright internally in a sound binding. This is a lovely copy of a very useful guide to the printers' marks of the incunabular presses in France organized by city. The Francophone city-states of Lausanne and Geneva are also included. Marie-Louis Polain 1866-1933 was a Belgian bibliographer who worked most of his life in Paris where he contributed to important catalogues of incunabula including completing volumes 4-26 of Pellechet after that scholar's death . Attractive contemporary limp paper boards patterned with yellow red and black inks paper manuscript labels on spines deckle edges. With four folding engraved plates at the end of volume IV. Pastedown of volume I with a small square of paper with some inscrutable pencil notations glued down. Bolton p. 646; Cole 893; Partington III pp. 80-90. Edges just a touch bumped a few pages with some very light foxing one page with a small hole affecting a word or two of text plates a little browned along the fold and one plate partially torn along the fold but still A SUPERB COPY exceptionally fresh and clean inside and out. Offered here in very pleasing contemporary paper boards this is the first combined edition in Italian of two of Macquer's most popular works: "�l�mens de chymie-th�orique" 1749 and "�l�mens de chymie-pratique" 1751. Coherently written in a straightforward manner primarily with the classroom in mind Macquer himself was a highly respected teacher these works became instantly successful as university-level textbooks. Partington tells us that they replaced Lemery's rather outdated "Cours de Chymie" as the favored text for teaching and they were eventually translated into English German Russian and Italian. Macquer 1718-84 made a few modest chemical discoveries but his chief contributions to the science were his applications of chemistry in particular to the porcelain industry and most importantly his writing. In addition to the present work he also penned "the first dictionary of chemistry in the modern sense" according to Partington. Given that Macquer's works were often destined for the hands of students our copy is a fortunate survival indeed not to mention enormously charming with its original deckle edges clean contents and vibrant pattern. This edition also appears to be quite rare. OCLC locates only eight copies worldwide with just one in the US Huntington and one in the UK Wellcome. Giovanni Gatti unknown
