First edition in English extra-illustrated copy of this "instant classic" Carlile the autobiography of the minister and advisor to King Henry IV of France. Charlotte Lennox was born into a well-to-do Scottish family that fell upon hard times. Well educated and distinguished early for her poetic precocity - but left to fend for herself financially she turned to a career in writing. After publishing two novels THE LIFE OF HARRIOT STUART based heavily on her own experiences in the American colonies and voyage back to Britain; and THE FEMALE QUIXOTE for which she is best known today Lennox took up translation work in hopes of finding a more stable source of income. Among Lennox's most successful productions in her long publishing career this translation of the Duke of Sully's MEMOIRS also led to an offer of a royal pension for Lennox in gratitude for literary services performed. She turned it down in favor of her patron finding a government position for her husband instead. <br /> <br /> The Duke of Sully 1560-1641 was viewed by many in the Georgian period as an ideal Enlightenment-era statesman and his MEMOIRS has been read as a literary political treatise. It influence was broad including on the American Founding Fathers: it features in the 1783 list of books to be imported for the use of Congress compiled under the leadership of James Madison. <br /> <br /> This copy has been generously supplemented with nearly 200 engravings primarily of portraits and landscapes of the figures and places described. As a 17th-century text via an influential 18th-century translation in a characteristically deluxe 19th-century extra-illustrated binding it is a lovely hybrid artifact. Three quarto volumes 10'' x 7.75'' each. Nineteenth-century full maroon straight-grain morocco by Bayntun raised bands elaborately gilt-stamped spines large gilt cornerpieces and triple-gilt rules to boards. Gilt dentelles marbled endpapers all edges gilt. Extra illustrated with 193 additional plates: portraits landscapes dramatic scenes inter alia. In private hands from 1826 until this day Thomas Sully's Byron has never before been the subject of scholarly study. Beginning with his discovery of the portrait in 1999 and a 200-year narrative of the portrait's provenance and its relation to other well-known Byron portraits the author discusses the work within the broad context of British and American portraiture of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Receiving most attention are Thomas Lawrence and Sully his American counterpart. The author gives the fullest account to date of Sully's career and his relation to English influences and to figures prominent in the early-nineteenth-century American imagination among them Washington Fanny Kemble Lafayette Joseph Bonaparte and Nicholas Biddle. London: Henry G. Bohn 1856. Hard Cover. Good binding. 12mo. 8 ads xii 509 1 xii 454; x 432; x 503 1 pp. frontises New edition. As issued in publisher's embossed cloth with title on the spine. Each volume has 14 pages of adverts that function as endpapers p. 2-8 at the front p. 2 being the front pastedown and p. 9-15 p. 15 being the rear pastedown. A fairly presentable set with wear to the extremities including some fraying with closed tears to the spine ends of a couple volumes; hinges are loose but holding; contents are largely clean. <br /> <br /> This set belonged to Confederate Colonel John Mosby and to Confederate General Eppa Hunton in turn and bears both names on the first blank page of each volume-the former name being crossed through in ink. In another book from this collection is a pencil note beneath Mosby's name and above Hunton's: "Bought at sale of Col. / Mosby - Warrenton VA." The pencil note is later and thought to be by Eppa Hunton IV General Hunton's grandson and from whose library this set was purchased. This inscription is not present in this title but one might suppose that Hunton bought multiple books at the sale and surely Sully's Memoirs was one of them.<br /> <br /> As a colonel Eppa Hunton took command of the 8th Virginia Infantry in 1861 and that July under Gen P. T. Beauregard Hunton's brigade helped to halt a Union advance on Richmond. He distinguished himself at Ball's Bluff and then commanded Pickett's brigade after Pickett's wounding at Gaines' Mill. Hunton led Pickett's men through the balance of the Peninsula Campaign acquitting himself with distinction. Hunton's brigade was with Pickett at Gettysburg after which he was promoted to brigadier general for his valor. During the last stages of the war Hunton was involved in battle around Richmond including Cold Harbor and Five Forks. He was captured at Sayler's Creek on August 6 1865 and was imprisoned for three months at Fort Warren in Boston Harbor. But Hunton was more than a Confederate General; after the Civil War Hunton would rise politically in Reconstruction era Virginia and serve in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. <br /> <br /> Both Mosby and Hunton were from Warrenton VA where they practiced law and both ultimately served in the United States Government Mosby in the Department of Justice and Hunton in Congress. Interestingly Hunton bought Mosby's home Brentmoor from him in 1877 who had himself purchased it from Virginia Supreme Court justice James Keith. While Hunton and Mosby traveled in a very tight political and social orbit there was certainly an adversarial level as after the war most Virginia politicians were staunch Democrats Mosby became a Republican and was even Grant's campaign manager in Virginia. These volumes point to a side of the owners rounding out what is often a history that is one-sided and neglects to consider their lives after the Civil War. Oxford American National Biography. Normal Illinois: Vulcan Publications 1939. Pre-war science fiction fanzine with some superb mimeograph work to the front cover reproducing a drawing attributed to "Sully". The editor and cover artist are almost certainly Clarence Willard "Sully" Roberds 1918-74 who was an associate of Bob Tucker and editor of the better-known fanzine Fantasy Fictioneer. Roberds was also the publicity director for the Illinois Fantasy Fictioneers. <br /> <br /> This issue is described as a convention issue and the event though not named is likely the Third Chicago Conference which was held during April 1940 in Bloomington Indiana. The zine is undated. OCLC locates no holdings; however there is a copy in the Hevelin Collection at the University of Iowa which assigns a date of 1939.<br /> <br /> Standard A4 format 8 1/2" x 11": 4 p. Illustrated portrait frontispiece in each volume. Text blocks are mostly in very good condition clean and bright with sunning to endpapers and very occasional and minimal foxing. Volume four has light water damage along bottom edge to roughly an inch in height not affecting text. Sein vollständiger Name und Titel lautete: Maximilien Ier de Béthune Duc de Sully Baron de Rosny Pair de France Prince Souverain d'Henrichemont et de Boisbelle Marquis de Nogent-le-Rotrou Comte de Muret et de Villebon Vicomte de Meaux. Sully wurde in der reformierten Kirche erzogen und zugleich mit Heinrich von Navarra unterrichtet. Er nahm mit Auszeichnung an den Feldzügen des jungen Königs von Navarra teil und kämpfte bei Coutras 1587 und bei Ivry 1590 mit. Ein strenger Calvinist stolz und schroff trat er auch seinem königlichen Freund besonders seiner Verschwendung und Ausschweifung wiederholt mit Energie entgegen; doch vereinte beide bald wieder die gemeinsame Liebe zum Vaterland. Deswegen riet er auch 1593 Heinrich zur Annahme des Katholizismus um den Bürgerkrieg zu beendigen. 1597 an die Spitze der Finanzen gestellt Conseiller aux Finances tilgte er eine Staatsschuld von 200 Millionen Livres erwarb den größten Teil der verschleuderten Domänen zurück hob eine Menge überflüssiger Ämter auf ordnete und vereinfachte das Steuerwesen baute Straßen führte die Seidenkultur und andere Erwerbszweige ein und begünstigte den Ackerbau; diesen und die Weidewirtschaft mfrz. pastourage frz. pâtourage erklärte er wiederholt als die Brüste von denen Frankreich ernährt werde «Labourage et pasturage sont les deux mamelles dont la France est alimentée». Seit 1599 auch als erster Großmeister der Artillerie von Frankreich und Oberaufseher über alle Befestigungen des Landes stellte er in kurzem die öffentliche Ruhe wieder her namentlich durch Vernichtung vieler Räuberbanden. Auf Heinrichs Zug nach Savoyen 1600 eroberte Sully die für unüberwindlich gehaltenen Festungen Montmelian und Bourg. Nach dem Frieden übernahm er unter dem Titel eines erblichen Kapitäns der Häfen Flüsse und Kanäle das Département der öffentlichen Bauten hob Zölle auf erklärte den Getreidehandel für frei legte Kanäle an und leistete in dieser Stellung viel für die Verbesserung der Kommunikationsmittel des Landes. Zugleich leitete er auch die auswärtigen Verhandlungen. 1604 wurde er zum Gouverneur von Poitou und 1606 für sein Schloss Sully an der Loire nebst den dazugehörigen Ländereien zum erblichen Herzog ernannt. Dabei erwarb er für sich selbst ein bedeutendes Vermögen. Nach der Ermordung Heinrichs IV. 14. Mai 1610 wurde er seiner Stellung am Hof entbunden und von diesem auf sein Schloss verwiesen; doch bediente sich auch Ludwig XIII. öfters seines Rats und ernannte ihn 1634 zum Marschall von Frankreich. Sein gleichnamiger Sohn übernahm das Amt des Großmeister der Artillerie von Frankreich starb aber bereits 1634 mit 46 Jahren. Maximilien de Béthune Herzog von Sully starb am 21. Dezember 1641 im Alter von 81 Jahren.
