The GHI is especially committed to promoting international scholarly exchange and collaboration by bringing together European and North American scholars as well as academics from other parts of the world in its conferences and research projects. The GHI was established in 1987 as an independent non-profit foundation. Since 2002 it has been part of the Max Weber Stiftung-Deutsche Geisteswissenschaftliche Institute im Ausland Max Weber Foundation: German Humanities Institutes Abroad a public-law foundation funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research which coordinates an international network of humanities institutes in Rome Paris Beirut London Tokyo Warsaw Moscow and Istanbul. While the GHI's basic operating budget comes from the DGIA special programs and initiatives are funded by grants from German and American foundations. To promote its mission the German Historical Institute conducts advanced historical research organizes international scholarly conferences awards doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships organizes seminars for junior scholars offers public lectures maintains a research library publishes a journal and several book series" German Historical Institute paperback

Original condition with blue wrappers titles to front and containing all the ads. This is a complete issue seldom found in such good and original condition. This is a fascinating report on the pioneering exploration of Dr. Junker who explored Central Africa from 1875 to 1886. He charted the course of the Congo and its tributaries during his decades there including the mapping of the Congo River and exploring the Nile sources. He also established the identity of the Welle and Ubangi. According to Baker Geographical Discovery and Exploration: 'he added very important details to the region he succeeded in making very complete investigations into the question of the Welle river he was able to correct a number of earlier travellers who had visited this region.' Accomapnied by a spectacular large colour map very detailed illustrating the journeys of Dr. Junker between upper Nile and the Congo as well as Bohndorff's route. Junker received the gold medal of the Royal Geographical Society in 1887. He published 3 books of his exploration over a period of several years. Born of German parents in Moscow he was influenced in his desire to explore Africa by Schweinfurth who drew his attention to the lands south of the Libyan desert "a region at that time . still shrouded in the veil of an awe-inspiring mystery."
