"The Society was not greeted so warmly in the United States. Within months of the adoption of the Institution critics began to charge that the members planned to use the Society to impose a hereditary aristocracy on the new American republic. The leading critic was a South Carolina judge Aedanus Burke. In a pamphlet titled Considerations on the Society or Order of Cincinnati published in Charleston in late 1783 and soon republished all over the country Burke charged that the Cincinnati would form an American aristocracy dominating the government and extinguishing the liberties of the people. Dozens of other critics soon joined Burke and resolutions denouncing the Cincinnati were introduced into several state legislatures. At a moment when Americans were deeply anxious about the future of their untried experiment in republican government the Society of the Cincinnati stirred fears of a conspiracy to seize power and create a new aristocracy as the first step toward re-establishing a monarchy over America" societyofthecincinnati.org. The "Post-scriptum" was a last-minute addition to the work which as originally printed ended with the "Omission" on p. 207 and table of contents on the verso of that leaf. Text in the post-script ends mid-word on p. 210 with one half of page 211 blank apparently a printer's error. The digital copy available through the University of California library system has the same printer's fault and calls this version "a rare variant of the quarto edition published in the same year without place of publication." Mirabeau's essay on this monopolistic financial institution and its harmful effects on the French economy just before the French Revolution; contributions to the work were also made by Etienne Claviere Brissot de Warville and du Pont de Nemours. Frontispiece lacking as is often the case. Bookplates of A. de Seville. Second Edition of parts I-III first Edition of part IV. 8 192; 2 266 4; 6 264; 8 278 81pp. 2 vols. 4to. The Founder of the Physiocratic School. A work of fundamental importance whose appearance created a sensation throughout Europe was widely translated and reprinted and earned its author an international reputation "greater than that of any other economist before or after not excluding Adam Smith or Karl Marx." Schumpeter p. 175n Mirabeau argues that wealth is the product of population -- in particular agriculture -- and that a large populartion is desirable that religious toleration free enterprise a more equitable system of taxation and distribution of wealth were necessary components of a vital economy. The first three parts appeared in 1756; by 1758 Mirabeau had fallen under the influence of Quesnay and issued the fourth part in which the latter's influence is very much felt. First edition of all six parts and a fine copy of one of the great classics of political economy. This work marks the birth of the physiocratic school and contains the first appearance on a large scale of the "Tableau Economique" of Quesnay portions of Quesnay's work had been privately printed in a few copies only at the palace at Versailles in 1758 and 1759. Lettre du Comte de Mirabeau adressée au nouveau roi de Prusse Frédéric-Guillaume II le neveu et successeur du grand Frédéric II lors de son accession au trône. L'auteur y livre ses conseils pour les réformes à faire et les attitudes à suivre. Depuis 1786 Mirabeau entretenait des liens avec la Prusse puisqu'il avait été chargé par la France de missions secrètes dans ce pays qui se poursuivirent pendant plusieurs années. Il adressa notamment au ministre Calonne plusieurs dizaines de lettres à ce sujet; cette correspondance publiée en 1789 sous le titre d'"Histoire secrète de la cour de Berlin" fit scandale et l'ouvrage fut condamné au bûcher. Place of publication has been variously suggested as London Brussels or Geneva. Attacking the Bank of Spain for speculation in the form of stock-jobbing. The Second of five works on finance published in 1785 the first being De la Caisse dscompte after the present work the next one being Lettre du comte de Mirabeau a M. Le Couteulx de la Noraye sur la Banque de Saint-Charles & sur la Caisse-d'escompte. The fourth volume was Sur les actions de la Compagnie des Eaux de Paris and the final volume was Rponse du comte de Mirabeau l'crivain des administrateurs de la Compagnie des eaux de Paris. "These several works written with energy and often with violence attacked the private interests of too many individuals not to arouse against the author much hatred insult and calumny. Imputations of ignorance were lavished upon him but not one of his pretended mistakes as pointed out nor one of is proofs controverted. He was likewise taxed with venality and his accusers forgot that in the interests of the government which secretly encouraged but publicly disavowed him ands in those of a few bankers ruined or having sustained serious losses he was attacking and driving to despair opulent and powerful stock-jobbers who would have paid him munificently for his silence had he chosen to accept their money." Place of publication has been variously suggested as London Brussels or Geneva. Attacking the Bank of Spain for speculation in the form of stock-jobbing. The Second of five works on finance published in 1785 the first being De la Caisse dscompte after the present work the next one being Lettre du comte de Mirabeau a M. Le Couteulx de la Noraye sur la Banque de Saint-Charles & sur la Caisse-d'escompte. The fourth volume was Sur les actions de la Compagnie des Eaux de Paris and the final volume was Rponse du comte de Mirabeau l'crivain des administrateurs de la Compagnie des eaux de Paris. "These several works written with energy and often with violence attacked the private interests of too many individuals not to arouse against the author much hatred insult and calumny. Imputations of ignorance were lavished upon him but not one of his pretended mistakes as pointed out nor one of is proofs controverted. He was likewise taxed with venality and his accusers forgot that in the interests of the government which secretly encouraged but publicly disavowed him ands in those of a few bankers ruined or having sustained serious losses he was attacking and driving to despair opulent and powerful stock-jobbers who would have paid him munificently for his silence had he chosen to accept their money." MIRABEAU LAMAR 1798-1859. Lamar served as the Second President of the Republic of Texas from 1838-1841. A protg of Sam Houston Lamar later served in the Texas Senate and as U.S. ambassadors to Costa Rica and Nicaragua under President James Buchanan. ALS.1 pg. 8 x 10. March 5 1847. Laredo Texas. An autograph letter signed Mirabeau B. Lamar Commanding at Laredo and initialed MBL. The letter grants the following: The bearer Jesus Barrera is employed on public serviceand has permission to carry arms for his protection; he will be respected accordingly and allowed to pass without interference Mirabeau B. Lamar Commanding at Laredo. The letter includes a postscript: Will the Quartermaster please dispatch the bearer with as little delay as possible and if necessary to furnish him with a horse to return upon should his own give out. Volume VI of the Lamar Papers within the Texas History Trust describe a Jesus Barrera who was captured in 1840 fighting on behalf of the Republic of the Rio Grande. This declared republic with several other northern Mexican states sought to break away from the centralized authoritarian Mexican government of General Santa Anna during the Texas Revolution to form a federal system modeled after the United States. Their revolution was brutally suppressed but received covert support from Lamar while he was President of Texas. Now almost a decade later Lamar was fighting for the United States Army at Laredo Texas and supported his one-time ally. His order to furnish a gun and horse during war-time to a Mexican citizen is very striking for how it complicates portrayals of loyalty during the Mexican-American War. This letter within its historical context is an excellent example of the ideological divisions that plagued Mexico around the time of Texas independence and the war with America. The letter is in fine condition with a few folds that do not hinder understanding. The letter is framed in brown wood and matted in tan with a hand-colored portrait of Lamar. unknown
