First edition; 11 3/4 x 9 1/4; pp. iii-v 3 9-99 1; pink wraps printed in blue with a sepia-tone photograph; illustrated with numerous maps and b & w photographs; two stamps of the Calfironia State Board of Trade to lower margin of front wrap; small antiques shop label to front wrap verso; a thin strip of clear tape to spine cover; a few spots to margins; overall bright and well-preserved; in about very good- condition. Intented to be "mailed free to prospective home seekers on application to Secretary of Merchants' Exchange or Board of Trade Oakland Cal." the book was pronounced by then former Mayor William R. Davis to be: ".the best and most accurate presentation of our resources and local attractive features and as an advertising medium yet published in the interest of Alameda County." It began with an aptly-titled chapter - "Deadly Parallel" - listing specific statistics and numbers from August 1896 of people dying of heat-stroke in cities around the country while in Oakland the temperature is balmy 65 degrees. It proceeds to describe Alameda County and the City of Oakland their climate resources modern ammenities notable businesses often with flowery and/or bombastic statements e.g. "One does not need to sniff the odor of the Chicago River or of its immense piggeries as a New Yorker contemptuously styled its huge pork-packing establishments to realize that he is in the Garden City." L’une des meilleures descriptions des Maldives et une importante description de Goa.‎

‎François Pyrard de Laval, marchand et navigateur français, embarqua en 1601 pour les Indes orientales. Après le naufrage de son navire aux Maldives, il y fut retenu pendant cinq ans, principalement à Malé, où il apprit la langue et observa avec précision les mœurs, les lois, le gouvernement et le commerce de l’archipel. Il parvint ensuite à quitter les Maldives et gagna la côte de l’Inde, où il séjourna notamment à Goa, alors capitale de l’empire portugais en Orient. Après son séjour à Goa, Pyrard fut embarqué sur un navire portugais et passa notamment par Ceylan et le Bengale. Devenu prisonnier des Portugais à Cochin, il fut finalement envoyé vers le Portugal pour y être jugé, les Portugais le soupçonnant d’espionnage. Au cours de la traversée de l’Atlantique, le navire fut toutefois détourné de sa route par les tempêtes et arriva à São Salvador da Bahia, au Brésil. Pyrard y séjourna environ deux mois avant de reprendre la mer, rejoignant ensuite la Galice puis La Rochelle, où il arriva le 5 février 1611, après près de dix années passées hors de France. Son récit est particulièrement important pour la connaissance des Maldives, de la côte de Malabar et de l’Inde portugaise, mais également pour les renseignements qu’il donne sur le Brésil, où son passage constitue un épisode inattendu de son retour vers l’Europe. Comme il a beaucoup varié pendant un si grand nombre de siècles, il convient de partager son histoire entre plusieurs périodes. On peut la diviser de la façon suivante : 1) Le commerce de la France jusqu'aux Croisades ; 2) depuis les Croisades jusqu'à la fin du XVe siècle ; 3) le XVIe siècle ; 4) le XVIIe siècle jusqu'à la mort de Louis XIV ; 5) le XVIIIe siècle jusqu'à la Révolution ; 6) depuis la Révolution jusqu'à nos jours." — L'ouvrage comprend quelques pages sur le commerce colonial en 1884 : Algérie, Tunisie, Sénégal, Haut Niger, Guinée, Congo, Cochinchine, Cambodge, Annam, Tonkin ; la question des "Comptoirs". — Charles Périgot (1828-1885) est l'auteur d'un "Précis de la géographie" et de manuels scolaires qui ont rendu de grands services aux études de son temps.
