A staggering compendium of products designed for the ease of life and business that provides a glimpse of life in Seattle in the 1920s. Everything from laundry stoves to garage-door hardware to church bells to Colt .380 caliber automatic pistols all presented with b&w illustrations. The Seattle Hardware Company was owned by the Black family of whom Frank served as Mayor of Seattle . for three weeks. They later formed Black Manufacturing among other businesses. Grey cloth lettered in blue a little stained marked and bumped; front endpaper a little marked and creased; minimal signs of age and use; a very good copy internally excellent. 'This is the sixth edition of "Specification" published since the outbreak of war. It is smaller in size than pre-war issues. War-time restrictions on the use of paper have made it necessary to reduce "Specification" by approximately one-third of its pages. The resetting of the book has however made it possible to condense rather than cut the contents so that although the volume is now smaller than in pre-war days it contains more information and forms an ideal body for expansion when the war is over. <p>The policy of compressing and condensing has been followed again for the 1945 edition which contains much that did not appear in 1944. This volume includes in addition to new and revised matter throughout two new sections: Ventilation and Illumination; four rewritten sections Metal Windows Plastics Plumber and Drainlayer and new matter concerning lightweight aggregates mastics and vapour barriers' editor's note. A further note beneath the Contents header reads 'it is possible that owing to war restrictions some of the proprietary materials mentioned in the editorial pages of "Specification" may for a time be unobtainable'. Illustrated with two full-page images interior scenes of a “wholesale liquor store†and of a “retail grocery†each showing the barrel trucks in use. The broadside folded inside is a list of first-year purchasers of the “1665 Barrel Truck†and is torn at the edges. The handbill itself is fine clean and bright. Unrecorded. Black textured cloth lettered in gilt on the front cover; cloth slightly worn at the extremities with a small amount of white paint at the head of the front joint; rear hinge pulled a little but sound; tears to mainly the bottom edges of about 30 leaves with eight of those tears above a centimetre long now expertly sealed; minor loss to the top edge of one leaf; a few other mild signs of age and use; a very good copy. This company was founded by Isidore Frankenburg a native of Krakow Poland who emigrated to the Uniited Kingdom settling in Salford on the outskirts of Manchester in the 1860s. His first venture in the field of waterproof clothing was gaitors. He moved onto other forms of clothing and became a very real competitor to the eponymous Macintosh now spelt Mackintosh because his method of proofing did not smell . Frankenberg became a very successful manufacturer and philanthropist he was an alderman and later Mayor of Salford and was active in many local charities. Date from page of medals received. Stated "Fourth Edition". There were at least three distinctly different works with this title issued by the corporate author: 1890 72 pages with the Lalance and Grosjean Manufacturing Co name; 1891 32 pages an almanac not a trade catalogue; and this one undated ~136 pages a trade catalogue. Promotional combined trade catalogue and cookbook for Agate Iron Ware Manufacturing Company manufacturers of kitchen ware. Illustrated descriptions of the wares typically two to a page face recipes. The recipes are decidedly Anglo-French not American and they lean towards more elegant fare. Illustrations include the Agate Iron Ware manufacturing plant on front wrapper verso an assortment of medals and awards and an image of a homemaker sitting in her kitchen surrounded by Agate Ware while consulting this cookbook. The front panel bears the printed promotional statement "Compliments of F. A. Walker & Co. Cornhill". In original chromolithograph wrappers decorated in a Japonisme-style. Small stain along bottom edge of text block bit of bumping to the corners. Wrappers worn at corners and with some wear to the bottom of the spine panel. Overall near very good. Original half morocco-grain cloth with green cloth sides embossed with a crocodile-skin pattern; spine lettered and decorated in gilt; joints cracked but sound; covers slightly marked with light wear to the corners and minor loss to the head and foot of the spine; paper lightly toned with occasional light foxing; a few trifling signs of use; overall a very good copy with the wonderful fabric samples uniformly bright and in fine condition. A comprehensive manual to the aniline dyes produced by the Badische Anilin- & Soda-Fabrik including detailed instructions for dying yarns and printing fabrics. The mounted samples comprise wool 135 fabric swatches; cotton 180 swatches and tassels of thread; silk 138 tassels; blended fabrics 96 swatches; and printed fabrics 72 swatches and tassels. The verso of the front flyleaf contains a printed generic 'with compliments' message ending with 'For Own Use Only'; this copy was presented to the John Young & Company cotton mill in Radcliffe Manchester in January 1907. Founded in 1865 the Badische Anilin- & Soda-Fabrik was a pioneer manufacturer of synthetic dyes. An extensively illustrated trade catalogue of heating furnaces and cooking ranges. Before the 1830s gravity hot-air furnaces were produced according to the specifications of individual buildings. The first mass-market manufacturer in the United States was Richardson & Boynton established in 1837 and in business for more than a century thereafter. The company survived the competitive surge in home heating manufacturers in the decades after the Civil War Fuller & Warren of Troy for instance also advertised as "the oldest house in the trade" introducing innovations in fuel source efficiency flue design cleaning access and model size – to say nothing of aesthetic appeal – at a surprising rate. The foundries and shop buildings occupied a double block in Red Hook Brooklyn; corporate offices 232-234-236 Water Street were across the Brooklyn Bridge in Manhattan. By the 1890s Richardson & Boynton were advertising themselves as manufacturers of multiple designs of furnaces fireplace heaters laundry water heaters cooking ranges stoves and kitchen appurtenances such as kettles urns pastry ovens and steam tables. Owing ostensibly to climbing tunnage and wharfage costs the entire operation decamped to Dover New Jersey in February 1896. Elaborate illustrations with equally elaborate cutaways; specification charts. A bit of chipping to head and foot of wrapper at spine otherwise very good in two-toned brown wrappers with gilt decoration. Pages clean and bright. Scarce. This provides the details of the publisher and paper residue on its cloth backing suggests it was originally tipped into say a representative's portfolio of samples. Overlapping colour-pictorial gate-fold card covers with panoramas of 'Early Adelaide' and 'Modern Adelaide' front and rear and with line illustrations of the site of the cafe then-and-now inside the respective covers; covers lightly rubbed and bumped at the extremities with surface loss to a tiny area of the front cover; bottom half of the front gate-fold hinge split but now expertly sealed; an excellent copy of a lavish brochure. 'The Ellis Cafe organisation was formed about 1917 as bakers pastry cooks caterers fruiterers and confectioners. The office and factory was at 120 Gouger Street Adelaide with a restaurant Covent Gardens at 50 later 68 King William Street the Arcadia Cafe in Bowman's Buildings King William Street the Maple Leaf Cafe at 21 Rundle Street and two others in the central business district. The Ellis Cafes ceased trading in 1952' State Library of South Australia B 72464/5. This attractive souvenir was prepared to celebrate the reopening of the cafe in late 1924 after extensive renovations. An article in the Adelaide 'News' on Saturday 20 December 1924 notes that the 'booklet is a triumph for its compilers and its illustrator Mr E. Lyon Société des Papiers Keller-Dorian ca 1950-1960. Oblong folio 9.5 x 15.5 cm. 34 samples in different colours several embossed in various patterns in wrappers of the same material. = A fine example of a velvet paper sample booklet showing the work of the Keller-Dorian firm in Lyon. Albert Keller-Dorian ran custom fabric-engraving plants in Mulhouse and in Lyon. He is best known for The Keller-Dorian process an additive colour process invented and patented by the French physicist Rodolphe Berthon in 1908. In this catalogue the leaves are numbered stamps a few on a label on versos but in no particular order. "The first mention of the Keller-Dorian company metal engravers located at 19 Chemin Saint-Eusèbe on the corner of Rue de l'Espérance in Lyon appears in the Fournier directory of 1895. In 1897 the Keller-Dorian company still specialized in metal engraving and also manufactured fancy paper at the same address at number 17. From 1901 onwards this dual activity was separated: metal engraving remained at number 19 and paper manufacturing moved to an extension at 15-17 Chemin Saint-Eusèbe also in Lyon adjacent to the engraving workshop. This company was the only one in France to manufacture multi-colored fancy paper. The head office was founded in Mulhouse in 1825. The Keller-Dorian family were originally wood and metal engravers for printing on silk and cotton of all kinds dresses furniture scarves specializing in embossing crepe and moiré" Halitim-Dubois. Provenance: stamp of the firm I. Oostra's Agenturen in Papier in Amsterdam Herengracht 155. Isodor Oostra bought the Herengracht canal warehouse in 1953 but the firm's name as stamped here dates from 1961. Additional full-colour illustrations in the advertisement sections. Original multi-colour pochoir wrappers with two silk ties. Printed erratum leaf tipped in. = A very rare survey of Japanese silk producers prepared for the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition. In all 144 companies present themselves here each providing a - mostly very colourful - logo often depicting birds as well as various other animals flowers geishas warriors etc. Included is an overview of the silk industry and its history. Between 1850 and 1930 raw silk ranked as the leading export of Japan accounting for 20 per cent to 40 per cent of Japans total exports. Between the 1890s and the 1930s Japanese silk exports quadrupled making Japan the largest silk exporter in the world. "The Louisiana Purchase Exposition informally known as the St. Louis World's Fair was an international exposition held in St. Louis Missouri United States from April 30 to December 1 1904. Local state and federal funds totaling $15 million were used to finance the event. More than 60 countries and 43 of the then 45 American states maintained exhibition spaces at the fair which was attended by nearly 19.7 million people" Wikipedia. It was by far the most important world fair before WWI." The Japanese government spent lavishly: $400000 plus $50000 from the Japanese colonial government of Formosa with an additional $250000 coming from Japanese commercial interests and regional governments". This lavishly illustrated work was not for sale and it seems likely that most copies ended up in governmental libraries. This copy however is not a library copy and apart from some very light wear to the wrappers is in excellent condition. Provenance: inscribed on the front free endpaper William Streuli from Berizzi Bute . One copy in the collection of The Met in New York City and one copy recorded in OCLC in a Danish library. 'Sole agents for Julius Feurich Leipzig; R. Lipp & Sohn Stuttgart; R. Görs & Kallmann Berlin; Carl Faust & Sohn pianos; the "Waldorf" pianos; also Estey-Organs over 400000 sold' subtitle. 'In 1898 Albert Conrad designer of Austral Buildings in Hindley Street was commissioned to create Kuhnel's emporium that expanded to house 400 pianos at 136 Rundle Street opposite Adelaide Arcade . By the 1920s Kuhnel's was the largest piano and organ store in Australia' AdelaideAZ website. Sands and McDougall. Melbourne. January 1886. 32mo non-paginated. Stiff paper covered one staple binding detached; the interior is in very good condition with some notations by the previous owner in a neat hand as below. This tiny remnant of the past at only 10.5 x 6.5cms provides a fascinationg window into life in Melbourne in the 1860's with Sands and McDougall publishing these minute and fragile mini-diaries for each month of the year. Contained therin are very detailed railway timetables for the state all phases of the moon sunrise and sunset times as well as departure times for the mail services. Each day has a separate page on which one could carefully write any relevant details and along the bottom of each page is a brief advertisement for items and equipment sold by the company who advertised that they were engravers printers and lithographers as well as manufacuring stationers. They were selling a "large and varied new stock" including ladies bags new shapes leather plush and seal photo albums writing desks brief and gladstone bags penholders and books etc. as well as rubber stamps and maths instruments. On Wednesday 6th January 1886 the page confidently proclaims that the P and O Steamer was due. To enhance its charm each vacant page has impossibly tiny handwritten notes in both pen and pencil mostly in long hand relating to a record of the daily expenses such as cigarettes 1/6 drinks 1/6 poor man 2/6 and postage costs. It is in superb condition with the only fault now being a rusted central staple detaching the middle leaf and the external paper covering. Sands and McDougall. Melbourne. January 1886. hardcover
