"Che vuol ch'io faccia del suo latinorum?": queste sono le parole che Manzoni mette in bocca al buon Renzo ne "I promessi sposi", mentre Don Abbondio, utilizzando un'espressione latina, gli indica i motivi per non sposarsi. Quante volte ci siamo sentiti anche noi un po' come Renzo, incapaci di comprendere a pieno quella che da molti viene ritenuta una lingua morta. Sono veramente infinite le parole e le espressioni latine che quotidianamente pronunciamo o leggiamo, senza nemmeno rendercene conto. Lo sapevate che monitor e media sono termini latini? Guidiamo auto, compriamo prodotti al supermercato, assumiamo farmaci che devono i loro nomi proprio all'idioma dell'antica Roma. Spesso scambiamo termini latini per anglosassoni oppure pensiamo che parole vecchie più di duemila anni siano dei neologismi. Per dissipare ogni nostro dubbio in materia ecco un libro che fa letteralmente a pezzi l'idea che la lingua di Cicerone, Tacito e Virgilio sia morta. Anzi, possiamo tranquillamente dire che oggi noi parliamo latino. Un volume fuori schema, ricco di informazioni, suggestioni, locuzioni e modi di dire ad uso quotidiano. Con un dizionario alternativo e divertente. La frase giusta da tirar fuori al momento giusto. Non solo per chi è già pratico di questa lingua, ma anche per chi il latino non l'ha mai studiato a scuola. E poi "verba volant, scripta manent".
