Istorica notizia dell'origine, e del significato delle Befane
in-8, pp. 34, cartonato muto ottocentesco. Non comune e curioso studio del Manni (1690-1788), Accademico fiorentino e prolifico autore di numerosi studi sugli argomenti più disparati. Questo in particolare è incentrato sulla figura della Befana e le credenze che aleggiano attorno alla sua misteriosa figura, le cui origini si fanno risalire al X-VI secolo a.C. Connessa ai riti pagani propiziatori legati all'agricoltura, era universalmente considerata la personificazione della Natura invernale. Condannata quindi dalla Chiesa, l'antica figura pagana femminile fu accettata gradualmente nel Cattolicesimo, come una sorta di dualismo tra il bene e il male. Il Manni dice "...che la Befana abita di soppiatto nelle gole de' cammini: che ella va a zonzo magicamente in tal notte perchè festa de' Magi: che pregata lascia regaletti ad alcuni putti nelle loro calze; ed altri nullameno ne cerca per forare loro il corpo: ad evitare il qual male il rimedio è trovato di mangiar fave, lo ché si usa tuttora da molte persone in quella sera; siccome il porsi un mortaio sul corpo, ed il pregare buono evento per via di un'oorazione apposta, detta l'Avemmaria della Befana..". Edizione originale. Ottimo esemplare, malgrado lievi bruniture in particolare alla prima ed ultima carta.. .

L'universo demoniaco creato dalle diverse civiltà ha sviluppato, nel corso dei millenni, un variegato sistema culturale dalle innumerevoli sfaccettature, favorendo la nascita di un ricco patrimonio etnologico. L'immaginario collettivo, la tradizione popolare, la letteratura e l'arte molto spesso presentano infatti la figura del diavolo in maniera diversa da quella descritta nei testi sacri e vista secondo i canoni dottrinali. In genere il folklore tende a mitigare la cattiveria del diavolo, che spesso finisce per essere ingannato dall'astuzia dell'uomo, soprattutto in occasione della costruzione di edifici arditi o nella ricerca di un tesoro. In altri casi, invece, l'opera dei demoni assume connotati terribili e pericolosi, per esempio nei luoghi infestati, siano essi palazzi o ambienti naturali come grotte, foreste, orridi e montagne. Il libro presenta un "itinerario diabolico", elencando una serie di luoghi ritenuti pericolosi e segnati da una fama sinistra per la presenza di entità maligne, molto spesso accompagnate dalle immancabili streghe. Nel corso dello studio si propongono all'attenzione del lettore, oltre alle leggende dall'aura tenebrosa, oggetti straordinari, animali dai poteri inquietanti e personaggi tormentati.
