Lo studio del folklore sta ricevendo anno dopo anno un'attenzione sempre maggiore, essendo suoi obiettivi la raccolta, la classificazione e la conservazione di vestigia delle credenze e delle usanze popolari e di rintracciare per quanto possibile la loro fonte originale. Questo obiettivo non è semplice, in quanto la scolarizzazione e le ferrovie stanno spazzando via velocemente ogni vestigia di quelle antiche credenze ed usanze che, nei tempi andati, avevano una parte così importante nella vita sociale e domestica. Lo studioso di folklore deve anche avere a che fare con periodi remoti ed esaminare la storia dei racconti e delle tradizioni che sono stati tramandati dal lontano passato ed hanno perso molto del loro significato con il passare degli anni. Ma, come uno scrittore dello Standard ha sottolineato, gli studiosi di folklore non pestano i piedi a nessuno. "Essi raccolgono punti della storia che gli storici disprezzano ed hanno a che fare con monumenti più intangibili ma infinitamente più antichi ..."
