Marcel Detienne, storico e antropologo della Grecia antica, risale alla nascita del mitico personaggio dall'albero della mirra per delineare l'opposizione tra il bellissimo giovane e la terribile dea Demetra, tra gli aromi e il grano, tra quel che rappresentano gli uni e l'altro: eccitazione e norma, vanità e utilità. Adone è dotato di un'esuberante vitalità ma a lui si associano giardini sterili, fatti bruciare al sole della canicola, feste disordinate, che esaltano lo sfogo sfrenato della passione, provocato dai profumi al colmo dell'estate e pervertitore dell'istituzione matrimoniale. Così è tutto un ordine celeste e sociale che viene sconvolto. Come osserva Claude Lévi-Strauss,"la scrittura di insolita grazia" di Detienne non cessa di rivelare i legami del mito di Adone con altri miti apparentemente "primitivi", imperniati sulla seduzione erotica e le sue più varie manifestazioni, aprendo inedite prospettive alla ricerca antropologica.

The ambiguity coded in the consumption of meat generated a mythology of the "other"werewolves Scythians Ethiopians and other "monsters." The study of the sacrificial consumption of meat thus leads into exotic territory and to unexpected findings. In The Cuisine of Sacrifice the contributorsall scholars affiliated with the Center for Comparative Studies of Ancient Societies in Parisapply methods from structural anthropology comparative religion and philology to a diversity of topics: the relation of political power to sacrificial practice; the Promethean myth as the foundation story of sacrificial practice; representations of sacrifice found on Greek vases; the technique and anatomy of sacrifice; the interaction of image language and ritual; the position of women in sacrificial custom and the female ritual of the Thesmophoria; the mythical status of wolves in Greece and their relation to the sacrifice of domesticated animals; the role and significance of food-related ritual in Homer and Hesiod; ancient Greek perceptions of Scythian sacrificial rites; and remnants of sacrificial ritual in modern Greek practices. . Foxing to top of textblock. ; Rich with implications for the history of sexuality gender issues and patterns of Hellenic literary imagining Marcel Detienne's landmark book recasts long-standing ideas about the fertility myth of Adonis. The author challenges Sir James Frazer's thesis that the vegetation god Adonis-- whose premature death was mourned by women and whose resurrection marked a joyous occasion--represented the annual cycle of growth and decay in agriculture. Using the analytic tools of structuralism Detienne shows instead that the festivals of Adonis depict a seductive but impotent and fruitless deity--whose physical ineptitude led to his death in a boar hunt after which his body was found in a lettuce patch. Contrasting the festivals of Adonis with the solemn ones dedicated to Demeter the goddess of grain he reveals the former as a parody and negation of the institution of marriage. Detienne considers the short-lived gardens that Athenian women planted in mockery for Adonis's festival and explores the function of such vegetal matter as spices mint myrrh cereal and wet plants in religious practice and in a wide selection of myths. ill., ril. "A Palmi di Calabria, Letterio Di Francia ha trascritto una raccolta di fiabe che ha i riscontr ipiù ricchi e precisi che si siano mai fatti in Italia". Così Italo Calvino annunciava, nella Introduzione alle sue Fiabe italiane (1956), la scoperta di uno dei repertori più significativi della nostra tradizione fiabesca, mettendone in rilievo "l'immaginazione carica e colorata", tanto da poterlo comparare a pieno titolo con gli altri grandi contenitori "regionali" di fiabe. Pubblicata per la prima volta nel 1929, l'opera di Di Francia comprende 61 fiabe, raccolte per lo più "dalla viva voce di fanciulle e di donne del popolo, analfabete la maggior parte, e trascritte in dialetto calabrese". Di Francia non esitava ad attribuire a quelle raccontatrici "compiutezza e garbo di esposizione, delicatezza di sentimenti, finezza di osservazioni psicologiche, vivacità ed arguzia". Si tratta di fiabe di estremo interesse, tanto per i rimandi alla secolare tradizione orale e letteraria, quanto per l'originalità dei temi in esse rappresentati.

C'era una volta la punta dello stivale, l'estremo lembo della penisola che come un forziere ha custodito gelosamente per quasi un secolo sessantuno fiabe venute da lontano a mettere radici in mezzo agli aranceti, tra le cicale e le zagare, e all'ombra di monti ombrosi stretti tra due mari pescosi di storie. Raccolte e trascritte in dialetto calabrese da un fine intellettuale come Letterio Di Francia, studioso della novella italiana e di fiabe popolari, queste storie, passate di bocca in bocca e narrate principalmente da donne, ci vengono restituite oggi in italiano per poterne apprezzare tutta la vivacità e la freschezza. La loro ricchezza non era sfuggita a Italo Calvino, che per la sua raccolta di Fiabe italiane ne aveva scelte cinque, in cui trovava "motivi originali e rari". Fiabe preziose, dunque, che sanno di zucchero e farina, dove nei boschi di ulivi agitati dal vento s'incontrano reucci impastati a mano, dalla bocca piccante come un peperoncino, e reginotte dalla pelle di ricotta... Accanto a questi e ad altri personaggi dai nomi suggestivi, si muovono i protagonisti già noti del nostro immaginario fiabesco, da Raperonzolo nei panni insoliti di Prezzemolina a Biancaneve qui nelle vesti di Chioccia d'oro.

br. Giacomo Di Girolamo ci racconta un pezzo di Sicilia finora rimasto inesplorato, quell'angolo estremo che è la provincia di Trapani. Dal vino Marsala, un tempo il liquore più famoso al mondo e oggi usato per la carne in scatola, all'abusivismo edilizio che si è mangiato tutta la costa. Dal mare dello Stagnone, che ora si sta prosciugando, ai tentativi quasi comici di costruire un monumento a Garibaldi degno della sua impresa. Dalla mafia che non uccide più ai turisti che si fermano in pellegrinaggio di fronte alla stele commemorativa della strage di Capaci. E ancora, dagli alberi di melograno, che si sostituiscono alle viti cambiando paesaggio e abitudini, ai ragazzini in fuga dall'Africa che riempiono le piazze con i loro giochi. Perché la Sicilia è una sorgente inesauribile di storie che non ci si stanca mai di ascoltare.

Catania: due o tre cose che so di lei
br. Micio Tempio e sant'Agata, la torre Alessi e il mare occultato, la "Milano del Sud" e la "Seattle italiana", la città-carcere di De Roberto e la città-salotto di Brancati, il monastero dei Benedettini e le penombre di villa Bellini, i poeti estinti e le operaie del sesso, le risate di Franco Battiato e le sgroppate del "Papu" Gomez, la "primavera" di Bianco e il porto franco dei valdesi, e tant'altro e altri ancora, giocano a rimpiattino e di tanto in tanto si mandano un fischio in questa rievocazione che a un tentativo di analisi critica, a un brusco "à nous deux" con una città multanime, inevitabilmente e inestricabilmente mescola il canto di sirene della memoria.
