All'interno della lingua italiana, sono stati presi in considerazione solamente i proverbi veri e propri, cioè le frasi di per sé complete e dotate di senso compiuto. Sono stati raccolti così 11000 proverbi. Di ognuno di essi si dà la spiegazione e si riportano le eventuali varianti, il riferimento ad altri proverbi di significato analogo, le attestazioni letterarie e le matrici latine. L'ordine dei proverbi è quello alfabetico. Se però il lettore vuole conoscere quali sono i proverbi che contengono una determinata parola, può farlo grazie all'Indice delle parole.

Monglond VI, 812 ne cite que les éditions de 1804 et 1805 ( avec titre différent). Le tome I contient l’histoire des contes ( depuis les temps bibliques jusqu’à Voltaire) : contes arabes, indiens, grecs, Pétrone, Apulée, Lucien, les Trouvères, romans de chevalerie, les Italiens de la Renaissance, Rabelais, les conteurs français, allemands, etc. Le tome II renferme des contes en vers par l’auteur. Ils avaient déjà paru en 1779 sous le titre de Graves Observations sur les bonnes mœurs. Paul Gudin de La Brenellerie (né à Paris en 1738, mort en 1812) était très lié avec Beaumarchais et Voltaire. Il fit carrière parmi les auteurs du second rayon, avec des recueils de vers et des pièces de théâtre. Sa tragédie Lothaire fut brûlée en cour de Rome en 1768 par décret de l’Inquisition.
