In tutto il continente, nonostante la sua grande varietà di lingue, nazionalità e religioni, queste mascherate rivelano sorprendenti somiglianze non solo nei personaggi, nei costumi e nella forma delle azioni rituali, ma anche nella struttura della messa in scena, che vede un susseguirsi ordinato di fasi distinte, dai diavoleri d'esordio di personaggi selvatici e paurosi, alla conduzione di riti augurali composti e calibrati, fino alle comiche finali: come se comunità lontanissime, sparpagliate ai quattro angoli del continente, continuassero da secoli ad attenersi a uno stesso copione, a una medesima antica liturgia. Nove anni di ricerca hanno permesso di lanciare su questi fatti uno sguardo nuovo, e di immaginare un'Europa che, nei fondamenti della sua antica religione agraria, si può pensare ancora unita.
