Nai-Tung Ting's work on the Chinese folktale provides an interesting example in this regard. At a cursory investigation, the work appears to have been done impeccably. It is bearing testimony to the high level of scholarly asceticism that has characterized so many of those who have fallen under the shadow of the Finnish Academy. The indexing system is efficiently laid out and easy to use. It lends itself readily to eventual computerization and will undoubtedly save all the research headaches and frustrations it has been arranged to. For this it merits the highest praise, as also for the actual amount of material that the author has gathered up and sifted through for us. The bibliography runs to well over 700 entries, many of them sizable volumes or collections running to several volumes. It is composed almost entirely of twentieth century editions up until 1973. Given the breadth and depth of the nation with the world's largest population, and probably also the largest active folk tradition, we have reason to be grateful for efforts such as this. (In a nice flourish of conscientious apologetics, the author even informs us that one particular source had to be skimmed through quickly because the poor quality of the copy hurt his eyes!)

People of Turkey, with an estimated number of 120,000 (2006 estimate), adhering to Alevism, speaking Turkish. They largely inhabit mountainous regions in the Antalya region.Some live in all-Tahtaci communities, others among other ethnic groups. The main village with only Tahtaci is Akcenis, while their main centre is the town of Gömbe. Akcenis is one of its regions best maintained, traditional villages. Their name comes from Turkish for "woodcutters", reflecting their livelihood in mountain regions. The Tahtacis are still organized into clans. Most live from agriculture and forestry. A small minority are still semi-nomadic, exploiting the opportunities of the mountains through summer. The summer season traditionally begins at March 22. This is also the time of the year for their New Year, Nevruz. In its festival, the Tahtacis celebrate their late relatives. There is another important festival in June, staged in Gömbe and a farmers' fair in late August. Tahtacis are, together with other Alevis, historically victims of Sunni Muslim persecution, and are one of the taqiyya groups in the Middle East. By this, they have accepted to be labelled Muslims, and mosques have been forcibly built in their communities. Today, it appears that there are few specific problems in their relation with Muslims. Modern Tahtacis appear open and friendly to strangers, and are conscious and proud of their distinct identity. (Source: Looklex Encyclopedia).

Turkish folk tales were collected from the mouths of the Turkish peasantry by the Hungarian savant Dr. Ignatius Kunos, during his travels through Anatolia, 1887 and published for the first time in 1889 by the well-known Hungarian Literary Society," A Kisfaludy Tarsasag," under the Title of Torok Nepmesek ("Turkish Folk Tales"), with an introduction by Professor Vambery. That distinguished Orientalist, certainly the greatest living authority on the primitive culture of the Turko-Tartaric peoples, who is as familiar with Uzbek epics and Uiguric didactics as with the poetical masterpieces of Western Europe, is enthusiastic in his praises of these folk-tales.
