‎Summary Over the centuries, historiography - in many different forms - became an important vehicle by which to create, articulate, and express the existence, awareness, and characteristics of Europe's regions. Be it the histories of noble families that were important stakeholders in a region, urban histories describing the developing urban networks through which regions could function, dynastic histories emphasizing the relationship between ruler and region, or hagiographies describing holy men and women and their veneration as focal points within regions - all of them represented and reflected identities within an understood spatial and or mental sphere. Historiography can therefore help us to understand the way in which regions were seen from within and from without, and to understand the patterns and dynamics of regional cohesion. Moreover, it sheds light on the dialectic between nation and region, and on the relationship between the regional sphere and the wider (inter)national sphere. The authors of this volume look at individual European regions from different points of view, using historiography as a lens. They analyse the ways in which history as a construct has played a role in establishing regional identity, providing examples of the ways in which recording, interpreting, and recounting the history of regions through the ages has been instrumental in shaping these regions. The first section of the volume explores regional identity in medieval and early modern historiography; the second shows how, in the age of the invention and triumph of the European nation-state (the long nineteenth century), historiography of a new kind was applied for a deliberate creation of regional identity, or at least reflected the need for a historical confirmation of identities. Tome I, liv-494 pp., Tome II 520 pp, Tome III (1801) xix 443 pp., illustré de 3 frontispices, 11 cartes dont une en double feuille et dépliante (720 X 620) (cartes des Indes occidentales), 2 dépliantes Saint Domingo (250 X 225) et Jamaïque et 8 planches h.t., ex-libris en page de garde, déchirures aux pliures et brunissures en marge de la grande carte, frottements, griffures, pièces de titre et tomaison avec petits manques, quelques brunissures sur les titres et quelques feuillets.‎

‎Ouvrage de référence sur les Caraïbes édition complète avec le 2 premiers volumes en deuxième édition considérée comme la meilleure avec des cartes, plans et illustrations ajoutés et le troisième volume paru en 1801 après la mort de l'auteur qui complète l'œuvre et qui est rare. Edwards a hérité d'une plantation en Jamaïque de son oncle et était en mesure de donner un compte rendu de première main, après la guerre américaine et avant l'abolition de la traite des esclaves. Il présente une description générale des îles, de l'histoire naturelle et de ses habitants, de la traite négrière, de l'agriculture, du sucre, du coton, du café, etc. et de divers documents gouvernementaux concernant la Barbade, la Grenade, Saint-Vincent et des îles sous le vent. Bryan Edwards était un homme politique et historien anglais de renom et un fervent partisan de la traite des esclaves. London: for John Stockdale, 1794-1801, 3 volumes, 4to (275x225mm). 22 engraved maps and plates (including frontispieces and several large folding maps), errata at end of Volume II, tears in the folds and browning on the margin of the large map, cover with rubbing, scratches, title pieces and volume numbers with small losses, titles and some leaves brunished. Edwards inherited a plantation in Jamaica from his uncle and was in a position to give a first hand account of conditions after the American War and before the abolition of the slave trade. He presents a general description of the natural history and inhabitants of the islands, the slave trade, agriculture, sugar, cotton, coffee, etc. and various government documents dealing with Barbados, Grenada, St.Vincent, and Leeward Island. Bryan Edwards was a renown English politician and historian, and a strong supporter of the slave trade. M1-Et1 Sabin 21901.‎

‎Rare ouvrage traduit par le docteur Nicolas Perron, sur une région mal connue et très dangereuse au sud de l’Égypte, l’ouvrage commence par une longue préface de Edme François Jomard qui recense les sources d’informations sur le Darfour et se poursuit avec des informations sur le climat, les animaux, les peuples, l’histoire et la géographie, il joint un vocabulaire de la Fouraoui ou Kongara. L’avant-propos est du traducteur qui insiste sur les dangers à pénétrer dans ces zones hostiles. L’ouvrage en lui-même a été écrit par Tūnisī, Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar ibn Sulaymān al- (1789-1857), marchand, né à Tunis et installé au Caire et qui voyageait dans le Darfour et le Oudaï, dont il tirera 2 relations, celle-ci sur le Darfour et l’autre, publié en 1851, « Voyage au Ouadây », l’auteur nous raconte ses voyages, ses rencontres, il décrit les peuples, cérémonies, coutumes, gouvernements, animaux, plantes, maladies, etc.., dans un récit vivant fourmillant d’anecdotes et de légendes, en appendice un portrait du sultan Abou-Madian, suivi de notes et éclaircissements du docteur Perron.
