In Helmstedt war V. ab 1778 tätig, nachdem er einem Ruf an die dortige Universität gefolgt war. Ebda. wurde er durch Karl I. Herzog v. Braunschweig zum Generalsuperintendenten ernannt, was in ermächtigte Verbesserungen im Kirchen- und Schulwesen direkt beim Herzog in Vorschlag zu bringen. (vgl. dazu Bautz XXVII, 1433-1437 u. ADB XXXIX, 597-598). - Allgemeines Glaubensbekenntniß aller Religionen. (Dem gesunden Menschenverstande gewiedmet). 1784. 4 ungez. Bll. (einschl. Tit.). - Nicht bei Holz./Boh. Überaus seltene, in den dt.sprach. Bibliotheken nicht nachweisbare Schrift, deren Zensurierung die Kirche offenbar betrieb, da Papst Pius VI. (1717-1799) mit einer Gegenschrift im selben Jahr reagierte (Damnatio, et prohibitio Libelli Germanico idiomate editi, cui titulus 'Allgemeines Glaubensbekenntiss aller Religionen 1784 Dem gesunden Menschenverstande gewiedmet: Latine vero Universalis professio fidei omnium religionum 1784 sano hominis intellectui dicata'). Papst Pius VI. konnte sich auf politischem Gebiet "im Abwehrkampf gegen die staatskirchlichen Ansprüche des aufgeklärten Absolutismus, die episkopalistischen und jansenistischen Strömungen der Zeit, gegen die Freimaurer und die Auswirkungen der Französischen Revolution nur wenig behaupten. Den staatskirchlichen Reformeifer Josephs II. ..zu dem uneingeschränkte religiöse Toleranz, die Beschneidung päpstlicher Eingriffe in die geistl. Sphäre sowie die allgemeine Unterwerfung der Kirche unter dem Staat zählte, vermochte P. selbst durch eine Reise nach Wien (1782) nicht zu mäßigen." Ladislaus Szekely schwere Veruntreuung vorgeworfen wurde, in voller Breite publizistisch und literarisch auszuschlachten versuchte. August in Kirchen des Franziskanerordens als vollkommener Ablass gewonnen werden kann. H. wurde v.a. bekannt durch ebda. herausgegebenen 'Wöchentlichen Wahrheiten für und über die Prediger in Wien'; diese Predigtkritiken zählten zu den wichtigsten Erscheinungen der österr. Aufklärungsprosa. 1791 erhielt H. einen Lehrstuhl in Wien; um diese Zeit entwickelte er sich zum fanatischen Reaktionär u. verfasste politische u. religiöse Schriften, in denen er sich gegen alle revolutionsverdächtigen Elemente wandte.
