‎SAMMELBAND. m. 6 kl. Schriften.‎

‎o.J. Kl.-8°. Dekorativer, marmor. HLdr.bd. d. Zt. m. Tit. ('Seltenheiten') auf mont. Papierschi. u. reichen Verz. in Goldpräg. auf Rü., Kleisterpapierbezug u. umseit. Rotschnitt. (H)[elmstedt], ohne Vlg. 1782. 28 S. (einschl. Tit.). - Holz./Boh. I, 7478. (vgl. dazu Bautz XXVII, 1433-1437 u. ADB XXXIX, 597-598). - Allgemeines Glaubensbekenntniß aller Religionen. (Dem gesunden Menschenverstande gewiedmet). 1784. 4 ungez. Bll. (einschl. Tit.). (vgl. dazu Bautz VII, 667-670). - [BLUMAUER, Johann Alois]. Glaubensbekänntniss eines nach Wahrheit ringenden Mannes. Herrenhuth [d.i. Wien], o. Vlg. 1782. 29(1) S. (einschl. Tit.). - Wolfstieg 22922; Hol./Boh. II, 7541. (Vgl. dazu Czeike I, 403f.). - [FEZER, Johann Jakob]. Ohne Ort u. Vlg. [Wucherer] 1786. XXII S. (einschl. Tit.). - Holz./Boh. I, 5292. Bodi, Tauwetter in Wien. Ss. 283-288). - [PAULSEN, Nikolaus]. Bordelle sind in Wien nothwendig. Herr Hofrat von Sonnenfels mag dagegen auf seinem Katheder predigen, was er will. Ohne Ort [Wien], ohne Vlg. 1786. 31(1) S. (einschl. Tit.). - Nicht bei Holz./Boh. Lt. Wr. In vorlieg. Hgg. v. L. A. Hoffmann. Wien u. Prag, J. F. v. Schönfeld 1782. Tit., 38 S. - Holz./Boh. VII, 8128.

- [FIRST DANISH TRANSLATION]‎

‎Kiøbenhavn, Schultz, 1791. 8vo. In contemporary half calf over yellow boards. Light wear to extremities. Pencil annotations to verso of front board. Internally nice and clean. (4), 182, (1) pp.‎

‎Rare first Danish translation of Luchet’s famous work in which he denounced the leaders of the Bavarian Illuminati, whom he accused of controlling Freemasonry, generally in Europe, and specifically in France. In his work de Luchet described the Illuminati's alleged methods including grotesque rituals involving skeletons, blood oaths and threats of poison to enforce loyalty. He accused the sect's leaders of pursuing universal domination not through obvious conquest but by manipulating opinions and infiltrating institutions like Freemasonry. De Luchet warned that the Illuminati's expansion posed an existential threat to kingdoms by spreading conflict, predicting they would destroy any state that tolerated them. ‎Second edition, published the same year as the first, of the first Danish translation of Perau's highly influential work on freemasons - being one of the very earliest published in Danish. ""A man of letters, an Abbé, and a member of the Society of the Sorbonne. He was born at Semur, in Auxois, in 1700, and died at Paris, March 31, 1767. De Feller (Universal Biography) speaks of his uprightness and probity, his frankness, and sweetness of disposition which endeared him to many friends. Certainly the only work which gives him a place in Masonic history indicates a gentleness and moderation of character with which we can find no fault. In general literature, he was distinguished as the continuator of d'Avrigny's Vies des Hommes illustres de la France, Lives of the Illustrious Men of France" which, however, a loss of sight prevented him from completing. In 1742, he published at Geneva a work entitled Le Secret des Franc-Maçons. This work at its first appearance attracted much attention and went through many editions, the title being sometimes changed to a more attractive one by booksellers. The Abbe Larudan attempted to palm off his libelous and malignant work on the Abbé Perau, but without success" for while the work of Larudan is marked with the bitterest maligruty to the Order of Freemasonry, that of Perau is simply a detail of the ceremonies and instructions of Freemasonry as then practiced, under the guise of friendship."" ‎The Constitutions of the ancient and honourable Fraternity of Free and Accepted Masons. Containing their history, charges, regulations, &c. Collected and digested by ordrer of the Grand Lodge from their old records, faithful traditions and Lodge-books... - [FOUNDATIONAL WORK ON MODERN FREEMASONRY]‎

‎London, J. Scott, at the Black Swan in Pater-noster Row, 1756. 4to. In a nice later half calf binding with five raised bands. Light miscolouring to extremities. Bookseller-label pasted on to front end-papers (“Librairie des Sciences Occultes"", Amsterdam). First and last leaves slightly browned. Tiny wormtract to lower outer margin of last 40 pp., far from affecting text. A very nice and clean copy. (4), 339, (1) pp. + frontispiece.‎

‎Rare third edition of one of the foundational texts of modern Freemasonry first published in 1723 and here in its expanded and revised form by John Entick. Anderson’s work represents the earliest official codification of Masonic law and practice, combining legendary history with the formal regulations governing the fraternity. “Anderson was a freemason, and when, in 1721, on the revival of freemasonry in England, the grand lodge determined to produce an authoritative digest of the ‘Constitutions’ of the fraternity, the task was assigned to him (ENTICK'S edition (1747) of the Constitutions, p. 194 et seq.). It was as a grand warden of the lodge that he presented to it, on completing his task. This work, which passed through several editions, was long recognised by the English freemasons to be the standard code on its subject.” (DNB) Wolfstieg 20418Dring 35(Sabin 25798 - a later edition)‎

‎"CALCOTT, WELLINS.‎

‎A Candid Disquisition of the Principles and Practices of the most Ancient and Honourable Society of Free and Accepted Masons together with some strictures on the origin, nature, and design of that institution.‎

‎London, James Dixwell, A.L. 5769 A.D. 1769. 8vo. Bound uncut in a bit later blue half calf binding with five raised bands and gilt lettering to spine. Top-edge gilt. Spine faded and with a few scratches. Ex-libris (Sidney Edward Bouverie Bouverie-Pusey) to verso of front board. Internally with light occassional brownspotting, primarily affecting first and last leaves. (4), XXXII, 243 pp.‎

‎First edition of this early and influential work on freemasonry, one of the earliest systematic printed discussions of the society. The work discusses the origin, symbolism, and moral aims of the order while responding to contemporary criticism, presenting Freemasonry as a philosophical and charitable institution rooted in Enlightenment ideals. ""Wellins Calcott saw in Freemasonry something more than a museum of Medieval relics, and more than a set of convivial clubs, and undertook to write a rational, or philosophy, on the Craft, becoming thereby the first of a line of greatly distinguished Craftsmen, in which were to stand Hutchinson, Preston, Oliver, Mackey. In 1769 (and with 1200 subscribers) he published A Candid Disquisition of the Principles and Practices of the Most Honorable society of Free and Accepted Masons, etc. Oliver described this book, so simple, so gentle in spirit, and with few obvious displays of the classical learning behind it, ""the gem of the period."" Kenning describes Calcott: ""Indeed he may fully be called the father of the Masonic philosophical and didactic school.""""(Mackey, Encyclopedia Of Freemasonry). Sidney Edward Bouverie Bouverie-Pusey (1839-1911) was a British author whose works included Permanence and evolution: an inquiry into the supposed mutability of animal types (1882) and The past history of Ireland: a brief sketch (1894). Verso of front board stating “J. A. Grantham, Wincle, Chechire”. In hand: “Gift of F. P. Reynold”. Internally with light occasional brownspotting. XV, (1), 272, 6, (2) pp.‎

‎Rare second edition of one of the classic nineteenth-century works on Masonic symbolism. In a series of twelve lectures George Oliver examines and interprets the most important emblems, allegories and ritual symbols of Freemasonry, including the square and compasses, the sun and moon, the Temple of Solomon and the symbolic tools of the various degrees. Oliver’s writings were very influential in shaping the Victorian understanding of Masonic symbolism and the philosophical interpretation presenting Freemasonry as a moral and allegorical system rooted in biblical and ancient traditions. ""Oliver George (1782–1867), topographer and writer on freemasonry, was descended from an ancient Scottish family, some members of which came to England in the reign of James I, and were subsequently settled at Clipstone Park, Nottinghamshire. He was born at Papplewick, Nottinghamshire, on 5 Nov. 1782, and, after receiving a liberal education at Nottingham, he became in 1803 second master of the grammar school at Caistor, Lincolnshire. Six years afterwards he was appointed to the headmastership of King Edward's grammar school at Great Grimsby. He was ordained deacon in 1813, and priest in 1814" and in July 1815 Bishop Tomline collated him to the living of Clee, when his name was placed on the boards of Trinity College, Cambridge, by Dr. Bayley, subdean of Lincoln and examining chaplain to the bishop, as a 'ten-year man.' In the same year he was admitted as surrogate, and a steward of the clerical fund. He had been elected deputy past grand master of masons for Lincolnshire in 1832, and in 1840 he was appointed an honorary member of the grand lodge of Massachusetts, with the rank of deputy grand master.” (Dictionary of National Biography)‎
