‎Francis Paget Bishop of Oxford: 'I dread a Controversy at the beginning of Term.' Autograph Letter Signed 'Francis Paget' to 'Dearest Bright' the patristic theologian William Bright‎

‎On letterhead of Christ Church Oxford. 1 October no year but before his consecration as Bishop of Oxford in 1901 . 3pp. 12mo. Grey-paper bifolium. In good condition lightly aged and worn. He begins by thanking him 'with all my heart for the kindness of a most interesting and valuable note' before describing 'the case of which I was trying to recall the details' that of William Whittingham c.1524-1579 Dean of Durham. He gives his source and discusses the matter with reference to Whitgift and Fuller giving the opinion that the argument 'surely looks like an effort to stretch & dignify an irregular laxity and not at all like an appeal to an authorized permission'. In the final paragraph he states that he has the previous night sent his letter to the Dean of St Paul's 'asking him to send it to the "Times" if he thought it desirable. - It will be a relief to me if he does not: - I dread a Controversy at the beginning of Term.' On letterhead of Christ Church, Oxford. 1 October [ no year, but before his consecration as Bishop of Oxford in 1901 ]. unknown‎

Nunc secunda vice in lucem prodit opus ab innumeris mendis, quibus scatebat Lugdunensis editio, magna cura repurgatum. 2 Teilbände (von insgesamt 5) in 1 Band.‎

‎Francofurti Ad Moenum [Frankfurt am Main], sumptibus Johannis Davidis Zunneri [Zunner], 1690. 2°. 36 x 23 cm. [12] Blatt., 1045 Seiten; [4] Blatt, 914 Seiten.

Contemporary vellum binding with old handwritten title on spine and red edges. First two volumes of this vast and and elaborated commentary on the decretals of pope Gregory IX. It is the magnum opus of Gonzalez Tellez and was first published after his passing. It disscusses amongst others the individual right in comparison to the canon law and its obligations. An argumentation that concentrates mostly (but not exclusively) on tradition, but captivates especially due to the resulting source of friction between the upcoming sensitivity to the issues of natural individual law and traditional canonic law. Before Frankfurt this commentary had only been published in Venice and Lyon. The historian and canonist Gonzalez Tellez studied and taught law at the University of Salamanca. First volume with title page printed in red and black and with a copper engraved title vignette, second volume with a woodcut title vignette, in addition both volumes comprise many woodcut vignettes and initials within the text. Binding lightly rubbed, fly leaf and title page darkened (due to bookbinder glue), title page also with small cut out, small previous owner's stamps on end papers and title page verso, pages only slighty darkened and a few isolated pages with small stains or margins with small defects, edges a little rubbed, otherwise very fine copy.‎

‎Gorgeu, Michel‎

2 Teile [in 1 Band; komplett].‎

‎Abbeville/Rouen, Verlag Laurens Maurry, 1659. 4°. 23 x 17 cm. [6] Blatt, 128 Seiten.

First edition. French language edition with small part in Latin. Leather binding of the times with 5 raised bands, gilt embossed title on spine and book decoration as well as marbled edges and marbled endpapers. Both title pages with engraved title vignette, altogether 101 numbered heraldic copper engravings within the text (most of them about 4 x 3,5 cm), 4 unnumbered copper engravings within the text, as well as woodcut vignettes and initials. The engravings were made by Robert Cordier, engraver from Abbeville. Also with engraved bookplate after Pierre Giffart, linking this copy to the family of De Villers de Rousseville. Very rare and interesting work by referring to the "Prophetia Sancti Malachiae Archiepiscopi, de Summis Pontificibus", the Prophecy of the Popes, wrongly attributed to the prophecy of St. Malachy and since the late 16th century until today topic of comprehensive speculation and research. Michel Gorgeu was a Jesuit monch at the Monastère des Minimes in Rouen and contributed his work advocating the Prophecy of the Popes, concentrating on the first 83 mentioned popes, beginning with Pope Celestine II and ending with Pope Alexander VII. The book at hand is often referred to concerning the Malachy Prophecy. Nevertheless it has already been difficult to obtain a copy since the 19th century. Binding a bit rubbed and fissured, spine with tiny defect to the leather, pages lightly darkened and seldomly with unobtrusive tidemark, one section a little loosened, numbering of the engravings partly not continuous (engravings nevertheless complete), 4 pages privately bound between pages 122 and 123 with coloured armorial sketches and notes in ink continuing Gorgeu's work, copper engravings sometimes with ink show-through. Impressive and still nice copy.‎
