‎Ein Jahrhundert nach der Auffindung der sogen. Laokoon-Gruppe wurde, vermutlich aus Anlaß dieses Jubiläums, die vorliegende Radierung herausgegeben. Badalocchio, über dessen Leben wenig verläßliche Daten überliefert sind, hat sie während seines Aufenthaltes in Rom 1606-1609 geschaffen, publiziert wurde sie von dem römischen Kupferstichverleger Vaccari. Die sogenannte Laokoon-Gruppe in den Vatikanischen Museen ist die bedeutendste Darstellung des Todeskampfes Laokoons und seiner Söhne in der Bildenden Kunst. Die Skulptur der Bildhauer Hagesandros, Polydoros und Athanadoros ist nur in einer Marmorkopie aus der zweiten Hälfte des 1. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. oder dem Anfang des 1. Jahrhunderts n. Chr. überliefert. Das Original war vermutlich eine um 200 v. Chr. entstandene Bronzeplastik aus Pergamon, die nicht erhalten ist. Die römische Marmorkopie wurde am 14. Januar 1506 von Felice de Fredis in seinen Weinbergen nahe den Ruinen des Goldenen Hauses Neros auf dem Esquilin in Rom wiederentdeckt. Für die Menschen der Frührenaissance, die eben begonnen hatten, sich für die Antike zu begeistern, war der Fund geradezu spektakulär. Im Auftrag Papst Julius II. begutachteten der Architekt Giuliano da Sangallo (1445-1516) und der Bildhauer und Maler Michelangelo Buonarotti (1475-1564) die bei Plinius erwähnte Laokoon-Gruppe; Sangallo bestätigte ihre Echtheit. Noch im März des Jahres 1506 ging sie in die persönlichen Besitztümer des Papstes über. Die Laokoon-Gruppe gewann einen außerordentlichen Einfluß auf die Bildende Kunst und Kunsttheorie. Zahlreiche Künstler, die im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert Rom besuchten, um die Antike zu studieren, zeichneten u.a. diese Gruppe. Später im 18. Jahrhundert regte sie z.B. im Jahre 1766 den Dichter Lessing zu seiner Abhandlung ?Laokoon oder Über die Grenzen der Malerei und Poesie? an, in der er die Unterschiede zwischen Bildender Kunst und Literatur herausarbeitete. Auch Goethe und Johann Joachim Winckelmann beschäftigten sich in eigenen Arbeiten dezidiert mit der Laokoon-Gruppe.‎

‎Edition originale ; une édition à la même date ne comporte que 444 pp. , comme celle de 1805. «Un des plus intéressants écrits du célèbre Maire de Paris. L'auteur y attribue la création de tous nos arts à un peuple ancien, originaire du nord, habitant primitivement les hauts plateaux de la Tartarie orientale. De ce peuple détruit, les arts auraient passé aux Chinois, aux Indiens, aux Chaldéens, aux Grecs, etc...» (Caillet-649 ; Stanislas de Gaïta-30). Ces lettres, écrites avant la mort de Voltaire, n'avaient pas pu lui être communiquées, c'est pour cela qu'elles ne commencent qu'à la quatrième lettre, les trois précédentes étaient connues du grand philosophe, qui contrairement à Bailly, était persuadé que les Brames sont les auteurs de la philosophie et des sciences, pour Bailly, ils n'en étaient que les dépositaires. Une petite épidermure à hauteur du titre de la reliure a fait disparaître quelques lettres, sinon, très bon exemplaire, frais d'intérieur.‎
