Die berühmten Buddhabronzen des Landes verraten in ihren Anfängen allzusehr den Einfluß der überlegeneren Khmer-Kultur und lassen darüber hinaus das Vorbild der Gupta-Kunst Indiens erkennen. Die Grundideen der thailändischen Architektur sind vermutlich originäres Gut der Thaivölker, und ihre Bauten sind auch bis zu einem gewissen Grade vollendet, jedoch ist ihre Entwicklung bereits seit Jahrhunderten erstarrt, ohne je einen Höhepunkt erreicht zu haben. Die Malerei Thailands weist natürlich auch Beziehungen zur Malerei der benachbarten Kulturzentren auf, besonders zu China. Die Kunst Südostasiens ist eine "Kunst im Schmelztiegel der Rassen". Die fremdartigsten Völkerschaften kamen entlang der von Norden nach Süden führenden großen Ströme in die fruchtbaren Reisebenen oder drangen von den offenen Küsten her ins Land ein. Primitivkulturen, die der zahlreichen, über den gesamten Subkontinent verteilten Gebirgsstämme und echte Hochkulturen, wie die der Mon und Khmer, waren daran beteiligt, die Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten des thailändischen Geistes in Charakter und Form mit-zubestimmen. Die eigentliche kulturelle Leistung der Thai ist, aus den vielen heterogenen Elementen, die in ihrem Land Spuren hinterlassen haben, eine Synthese geschaffen zu haben, die ihre eigenen Fähigkeiten in einer spezifischen Manier ausdrückt, so daß man von einer Thaikunst zu reden vermag. Ein großer Teil der wertvollsten Wandmalereien ist bereits vernichtet oder befindet sich ständig in weiterer Auflösung. Allgemeines Desinteresse, auch von offizieller Seite, ließ es zu, daß die anfälligen Temperamalereien ungeschützt dem verheerenden tropischen Klima preisgegeben wurden. In älteren, baufälligen Tempeln, besonders in Ayuthayä, sind bereits ganze Wände, die vor noch nicht langer Zeit mit den herrlichsten Malereien bedeckt waren, vom Monsunregen völlig leergewaschen. Nicht einmal Kopien der verlorengegangenen Bilder sind vorhanden.
