Hunter, Richard
THE ARGONAUTICA OF APOLLONIUS Literary Studies
Light bumping to lower edge. Pencil marginalia to a couple of pages. Creasing and 1 chip along top edge of DJ. ; 216 pages; In recent years the subtlety and complexity of Apollonius' Argonautica have been better appreciated, but in Dr Hunter's view the purposes and aesthetic of the epic are still not readily understood and much basic analysis remains to be done. The present book seeks to offer some of that analysis and to place the Argonautica within its social and intellectual context. A series of studies deal with notions of heroism; with eros and the suffering of Medea; the role of the divine; poetic voice and literary self-consciousness; and the Ptolemaic context of the poem. A pervasive theme of the book is Apollonius' creative engagement with Homer, and a final chapter sketches out an approach to Virgil's use of Apollonius in the Aeneid. The Argonautica emerges as a brilliant and original experiment. This book is the only advanced study of the Argonautica currently available. All Greek is translated.

Hurston, Zora Neale
The sanctified church
White octavo, Trade Paperback, 107 pages ; 24 cm. The Sanctified Church is a collection of Hurston's ground-breaking essays on Afro-American folklore, legend, popular mythology, and, in particular, the unique spiritual character of the Soouthern Black Christian Church. Along with preserving the customs, music, speech, and humor of rural Black America, The Sanctified Church introduces us to such extraordinary figures as Mother Catherine, matriarchal founder of a highly personal Voodoo Christian sect; Uncle Monday, healer, conjurer, and powerful herb doctor; and High John de Conquer, the trickster/shaman figure of freedom and laughter still honored in parts of rural Black America today. A pioneering ethnographer and floklore scholar, the great Zora Neale Hurston captured the exuberance, vitality and genius of Black culture with a vividness and authority unmatched by any other writer. (Rear cover). Contents: Father Abraham -- Cures and beliefs -- Mother Catherine -- Uncle Monday -- Daddy Mention -- Characteristics of negro expression -- High John de Conquer -- Spirituals and neo-spirituals -- Conversions and visions -- Shouting -- Sermon -- Sanctified church. African Americans -- Religion, Folklore.

HYGINUS, Caius Julius.
Poeticon astronomicon (edidit Jacobus Sentinus et J.L. Santritter).
in-4, ff. ''The woodcuts derive from medieval sources, and depict figures in medieval European costume. these figures were reprinted, and copied in numerous incunable editions, and were the source for the engraved images of Jacon de gheyn and via the latter many of the images in Johannes Bayer.'' RESTLESS DEAD; Encounters between the Living and the Dead in Ancient Greece
University of California Press. 2013. Hardcover. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. Sunning along top edge of DJ. Minor shelfwear to DJ. Minor pencilling to margins of some pages. Scholar's name to ffep Bonnie Maclachlan née Ward.; During the archaic and classical periods Greek ideas about the dead evolved in response to changing social and cultural conditions—most notably changes associated with the development of the polis such as funerary legislation and changes due to increased contacts with cultures of the ancient Near East. In Restless Dead Sarah Iles Johnston presents and interprets these changes using them to build a complex picture of the way in which the society of the dead reflected that of the living expressing and defusing its tensions reiterating its values and eventually becoming a source of significant power for those who knew how to control it. She draws on both well-known sources such as Athenian tragedies and newer texts such as the Derveni Papyrus and a recently published lex sacra from Selinous. Topics of focus include the origin of the goes the ritual practitioner who made interaction with the dead his specialty the threat to the living presented by the ghosts of those who died dishonorably or prematurely the development of Hecate into a mistress of ghosts and its connection to female rites of transition and the complex nature of the Erinyes. Restless Dead culminates with a new reading of Aeschylus' Oresteia that emphasizes how Athenian myth and cult manipulated ideas about the dead to serve political and social ends.; 9.0 X 6.1 X 1.3 inches; 352 pages . 0520217071 . Imai Messina Laura
Goro goro.
