Ruscelli, gefolgt von einer Epositioni Ruscellis "sopra tutta la Geografia di Tolomeo" und einem Discorso universale von Giuseppe Moletto, "matematico". Neben den 27 ptolemaeischen Karten enthält das Werk 37 "moderne" Karten, darunter 3 Weltkarten (Shirley 109-111), von denen Orbis pictus die Welt erstmals in einem Atlas nicht in einzelnen, sondern in zwei miteinander verknüpften Hemisphären darstellt ("elegantly designed and engraved", Shirley 110), ferner 6 Karten zu Amerika (u. a. Burden 29 - 30) u. a. - " ... was followed in 1561 by his Italian translation of Ptolemy`s Geography. Its twenty-six ancient and thirty-six modern maps were drawn by Gastaldi and engraved by Giulio Sanuto. The work included Ruscelli`s commentary and a treatise on the practical fabrication of small globes by Galileo`s tutor and professor of applied mathemtics in Padua, Giuseppe Moletto. The verities of vision and representation are a recurrent theme in Ruscelli`s Ptolemaic commentary. Whishing to describe the whole earth on sphere or flat maps, Ptolemy had been obliged to use cartographic signs rather than mimetc images for cities, countries, and events. Ruscelli focuses on Ptolemy`s distinct mode of spatial represantation turn upon realtionships between eye and mind as tools for acquiring knowledge. Globes and world maps offer the means for humans to see the earth as a unity and thus to know it directly. But the visual image alone is insufficient. A text is also required; the globe maker produces an icontext, and Ruscelli compares Ptolemy unfavorably with Strabo as a writer of Regional description" (Denis E. Cosgrove, Apollo`s Eye. Er lebte in Alexandria in der römischen Provinz Ägypten. Insbesondere seine drei Werke zur Astronomie, Geografie und Astrologie galten in Europa bis zur frühen Neuzeit als wissenschaftliche Standardwerke und wichtige Datensammlungen. Features 64 double page maps: 27 Ptolemaic maps showing the ancient world as Ptolemy knew it including one world map 37 "modern" maps with two world maps and several woodcut diagrams illustrations and decorative initials. First Italian edition. Binding well-worn at edges. Small wormholes in a few pages of text. Library stamp manuscript notes and seal in red ink on title page. Marginal dampstains and occasional foxing with small pencil and contemporary ink notations in margins and on some maps. In general maps are clean and bright. Bookplate of Otto Orren Fisher and ink inscription dated 1724.<br/><br/> Girolamo Ruscelli c. 1504-1566 was a Venetian editor. He introduces several important innovations in this volume through his 37 "modern" maps which cover Europe Africa Asia and the New World. Ruscelli includes a double hemisphere world map which was the first of its kind to be used in an atlas and "Carta Marina Nuova Tavola" a rare sea chart of the world. He includes a revised version of the Zeno map of the Arctic first published in 1558. Claudius Ptolemy 90-168 CE was a Roman geographer and mathematician living in Egypt who compiled his knowledge and theories about the world's geography into one seminal work. During the Renaissance revival of Greek and Roman works "Geographia" was rediscovered by monks and based upon Ptolemy's detailed instructions the maps were recreated. ‎Belle édition du XVIe siècle de l'un des plus importants ouvrages d'astronomie antique, qui servit longtemps de base aux astrologues européens. Elle est illustrée de diagrammes et jolies lettrines gravés sur bois. On la doit au mathématicien Nicolas Prückner qui fut professeur d'astronomie à l'université de Tübingen. Ce célèbre traité d'astrologie de Firmicus Maternus est connu sous le nom de "Mathesis" (ou "Matheseos libri octo"). Il est suivi de 3 oeuvres de Ptolémée (le "Quadripartitum", le "De inerrantium stellarum" et le "Centiloquium"), et de la version latine de plusieurs ouvrages d'astrologie grecque ou arabe, dont les Cent Aphorismes d'Hermès, les propositions astrologiques au roi des Sarrasins par Almansor, les livres de la Nativité par Omar, l'Astronomicon de Marcus Manilius ou le "De diffinitionibus" d'Othon Brunfels. Unique traité latin d'astrologie a avoir été intégralement conservé, la Mathesis est une compilation des sources anciennes (grecs, latins, égyptiens ou chaldéens), rédigée vers 330 apr. J.-C. par l'écrivain latin Julius Firmicus Maternus. "Cet ouvrage, divisé en VIII livres est un véritable Manuel pratique de l'astrologie, rédigé d'après la Doctrine de Ptolémée de Péluse, et maintes fois recommandé dans les commentaires" de Junctin, comme une autorité de premier ordre en matière d'occultisme.
