‎Antiquity as inspiration can be revealed in the works of Paul Delvaux as from the beginning of the 1930s and gets more important during World War II, for example with the theme of the tragic city. His interest in antiquity is characterized by antique sculpture and leads the artist to the elaboration of a theatralic human figure. These theatralic and dramatic representations put on mythical figures like Pygmalion, Venus or Penelope as well as sirens, ephebes and hamadryads. Delvaux also evokes a certain secret sacrality of so-called ''places of memory'' as temples and antique places like the Acropolis, Olympia or Pompeii. Places which Delvaux visited on the occasion of his two journeys to Italy in 1937 and 1939 as well as on his travel through Greece in 1956. Finally, we should not forget a most important aspect of Delvaux's reception of antiquity: that of melancholic withdrawal. The exhibition will show around sixty works, paintings and drawings, declined around the above mentioned themes.‎

‎Vanaf het begin van de jaren 30 wordt Delvaux' werk gekenmerkt door invloeden uit de oudheid. Deze invloed neemt toe vanaf Wereldoorlog II, meer bepaald via het thema van de tragische stad. Delvaux' interesse voor de oudheid is mede ingegeven door de antieke sculptuur die de kunstenaar ertoe zal aanzetten om een getheatraliseerde voorstelling van de mens te ontwikkelen. In deze theatrale en dramatische voorstellingen duiken allerlei mythische figuren op zoals Pygmalion, Venus of Penelope alsook sirenes, efeben en hamadryaden. Hierbij roept hij de geheime sacraliteit op van de "herinneringsplaatsen", tempels en antieke steden zoals de Acropolis, Olympos en Pompei. Deze plaatsen bezocht Delvaux tijdens zijn twee reizen naar Italie in 1937 en 1939 alsook tijdens zijn reis naar Griekenland in 1956. Tot slot is er nog een ander zeer belangrijk aspect in de receptie van de antieken door Delvaux, namelijk dat van melancholische teruggetrokkenheid. De tentoonstelling zal een 60tal werken, schilderijen en tekeningen bijeengebracht rond dit thema presenteren. Naast de tentoongestelde werken worden ook de andere belangrijke werken uit Delvaux' oeuvre in het boek weergegeven evenals een 10-tal bijdragen door verschillende specialisten die een nieuw licht op het Delvaux onderzoek werpen.‎
