‎La monnaie frappée en Égypte par les rois hellénistiques puis par les empereurs romains représente-t-elle une exception dans l'histoire monétaire de l'Antiquité? De nombreux indices peuvent le faire penser: dès 315 av. J.-C., la monnaie d'argent émise à Alexandrie utilise un étalon plus léger qu'ailleurs cependant que les pièces de bronze y jouent un rôle particulièrement important. Des papyrus indiquent que la monnaie étrangère ne pouvait pénétrer dans le pays. D'Auguste à Dioclétien, les empereurs ont poursuivi cette politique avantageuse pour le souverain, en faisant frapper une monnaie à l'iconographie très variée. Parallèlement, les papyrus font apparaître une montée impressionnante des prix et les historiens en ont conclu que, tout à la recherche du profit, les Ptolémées auraient déclenché une inflation qui avait ruiné le pays. Ce colloque fait le point sur la question en rassemblant la documentation disponible sur la circulation du numéraire égyptien et en comparant les pratiques monétaires du royaume et de la province à celle des autres États hellénistiques et au reste de l'Empire. L'originalité en est incontestable, mais elle ne se situe pas toujours là où on le pensait et l'Égypte n'est pas cet isolat financier que certains ont parfois supposé. Éclairée par une riche documentation papyrologique, la numismatique égyptienne n'en pose pas moins de graves problèmes d'interprétation dont les discussions cernent les contours et analysent les possibles explications.
