Reisner, George Andrew; (William Stevenson Smith).
A History of the Giza Necropolis; The Tomb of Hetep-heres [Hetepheres] the Mother of Cheops: A Study of Egyptian Civilization in the Old Kingdom, I-II. [TWO VOLUMES].
Two volumes. Small folio. Pp. xlvii, (1), 532, plus 75 plates with multiple images to each, and 6 large, folding plans bound at end. With 325 illustrations to text; xxv, (3),107, plus 55 plates with multiple images to each, and 147 illustrations on 21 separately printed leaves, bound at end. Hardcover, uniformly bound in the original publisher's forest green cloth, small insignificant mark at bottom corner, gilt lettering to covers and spines, volume II with worn dust-jacket. In a very good condition, fine interiors. ~ First edition. Complete set. Volume II completed and revised by William Stevenson Smith and published posthumously. George Andrew Reisner (1867-1942) was the first person to make fully systematic excavations in Egypt, exploiting the technique of recorded digging much further than Petrie and earlier archaeologists had done. This attention to every detail and the scrupulous care taken meant that although his reports were much fuller than those of his predecessors, they also required much more time for preparation, resulting in a great part of his work remaining incomplete and unpublished at his death. His publications were of great importance and of monumental proportions, with a detailed study unknown before his time. The wonderful plates in Volume I are printed in collotype, one of the most accurate and attractive methods of photomechanical tonal printing processes. Highly skilled and expensive process, it cannot produce more than a limited number of impressions. It has been used for single-sheet prints and luxury portfolios, and since the 1950s has been abandoned by all except a few small specialist firms. Beinlich-Seeber 16565 (vol. I).

Caspar Jacob Christiaan Reuvens (1793-1835), Dutch Egyptologist. Also known as Caspari Jacobi Christiani Reuvens, Gaspard Jacob Chrétien Reuvens, Casparus Jacobus Christianus Reuvens, and Kaspar Jakob Christian Reuvens. Studied law and classics in Amsterdam and Leiden but became interested in archaeology during a stay in Paris. He was appointed first director of the Leiden Museum of Antiquities and first professor of archaeology in the Netherlands (Leiden University, 1818-1835). It was Reuvens who transformed the mediocre archaeological cabinet of Leiden University to the National Museum of Antiquities of the Netherlands. Backed by King William I, he acquired the successive collections of De Lescluze, Cimba, and Anastasi, as well as numerous classical collections. Among his books are "Epimetrum de quibusdam monumentis cum Pollionis historia conjunctis" (1820); and "Periculum animadversionum archaeologicarum ad cippos Punicos Humbertianos Musei Antiquarii Lugduno-Batavi" (1822). Antoine-Jean Letronne (1787-1848) was a French archaeologist, director of the Ecole des Chartes, and inspector-general of the University of France. In 1831 he became professor of history in the College de France, a chair he exchanged in 1838 for that of archaeology. In 1840 he became the keeper of the national archives.

Riffert, George Raymond
GREAT PYRAMID PROOF OF GOD
Dustjacket is protected in mylar. DJ is missing a small piece at spine. Bookplates of former owner; According to Riffert, the Great Pyramid was built by the biblical king Enoch, as 'God's Bible in stone'. As such, its measurements and construction are supposed to represent various messages about the nature of god and to prophesy key occurrences in the history of the world. I present a few of the events supposedly foretold (by an arcane and contrived method of taking dates from measurements of the turnings in the internal passageways of the pyramid) : * 4000 BC. The year of man's creation. Any evidence of man before this date must obviously be wrong, as unbiblical. * 2344 BC. The Great Flood. * Saturday October 6, 4 BC. Birth of Christ. * Friday April 7, AD 30. Death of Christ. * AD 1558. Start of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. * 25 January, 1844. Amongst other items, the passing of the Bank Charter Act. * August 2, 1909. Czar of Russia met King Edward and inspected the Great Fleet at Clowes. * December 2, 1924. 'On this date the new English Parliament met for the first time, after the Labour Party Parliament, which resigned, had been in power only 286 days'. You would be entitled to think it a little odd that good King Enoch went to all that trouble to forecast a relatively minor date in British political history, but in Riffert's loopy worldview this is perfectly natural. For Riffert was one of the British-Israelites, who believed that the British were in fact the ten lost tribes of Israel, and hence God's Chosen People. Contents include: Great Pyramid and Modern Thought; World's Greatest Wonder; God's Bible in Stone; Modern Science of the Great Pyramid; Christ and Salvation of the Great Pyramid; Astronomical Timing of Man's Creation; Great Pyramid Versus Evolution; Great Pyramid and the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel; What the Great Pyramid Proves etc.. ; 233 pages
