His most famous work the Traite des etudes proposed "a reformed and innovative system of education including a more frequent and extensive use of the vulgar tongue and discarded the medieval traditions that had lingered" in French education. Thirteen volumes of Charles Rollin's popular historical compilation. Published in French with a folding plate to volume eight and two folding plates to volume eleven. Across thirteen volumes Rollin offers a survey of the ancient Egyptians Carthaginians Assyrians Babylonians Medes Persians Macedonians and Greeks. Volume eleven has two volumes bound as one and volume thirteen has a chronological table to the rear. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front pastedown of all thirteen volumes 'Ann Hopkinson 1802'. In a full contemporary calf binding. Externally generally smart. Volume III VIII and XIII are all missing a little calf to the head of the spine with some closed tears in the calf to the head of volumes I III and XI. Volumes IX and X are missing a some calf to the tail whilst volumes VII and XII have a small closed tear each. Volumes II and XII have small chips in the calf near the front joint whilst volume VII is cracked at the front joint. The front hinge of volume I is starting but firm. Internally firmly bound.
