ill., br. Un Veneto inusuale, terra di briganti e di banditi, emerge da queste pagine. A partire dalla temibile banda di Giovanni Stella, decapitato a Padova assieme ad altri dodici briganti nell'ottobre del 1812, punta di un iceberg che vede in attività numerose bande dopo le insorgenze in età napoleonica. A metà Ottocento il brigantaggio si manifesta in una dimensione ancora più vasta, ed è oggetto di una repressione ferocissima. Una commissione militare insediata a Este nel 1850 processa più di 1200 briganti infliggendo centinaia di condanne a morte, di cui più di quattrocento eseguite. Una strage che colpisce ladri e rapinatori, ma anche briganti non privi di coscienza sociale. Infine, Giuseppe Bedin: il più temibile bandito degli anni Trenta del Novecento. Capo della "famigerata banda" che per tre anni semina il terrore nell'Italia settentrionale e tiene in scacco le forze dell'ordine, mettendo a segno colpi clamorosi che imbarazzano il regime fascista all'apice del consenso, Bedin ambisce a presentarsi come bandito giustiziere, che ruba ai ricchi per dare ai poveri. In realtà - più che a Robin Hood - è assimilabile a un gangster come Dillinger, che del resto era quasi suo coetaneo.
