‎TRIALS.‎

‎A Full and True Relation of Two Very Remarkable Tryals at the Quarter-Sessions of the Peace for the City and Liberty of Westminster held in the Great Hall, on Monday the third of October, and ending the eleventh of the same. The one, for scandalous words, by one Shippon : the other, of a priest in the Gate-house, for spoiling a girl of nine years old. By way of a letter to a friend.‎

‎First edition, folio (295 x 190 mm), 4pp., drop-head title, a well margined copy with just slight signs of a water stain, sewn in recent marbled wrappers, preserved in a custom-made folding cloth case, leather spine label lettered in gilt. Sexual abuse of a nine year old girl by an Irish priest. The second part of the pamphlet contains "a very foul case" of sexual abuse of a nine year girl by an Irish Catholic priest of the name of Dowdel. The girl, named Bishop, swore in court that the previous August she used to visit Dowdel, then a prisoner in the Gate-house where she had first made his acquaintance when her mother was also a prisoner there. According to her testimony: "he used to kiss her, to take her upon his knee, and to give her sugared beer, some time put his tongue into her mouth, and his hands up her coats; that he hurt her once with his finger, which made her cry; and then to please her, gave her two groats: and that a week after he took her in like manner upon his knee, and after he had kissed her a while, he threw her upon his bed (having made his Door fast with a stick) fell upon her, pull'd up her Coats, and hurt her with something..." When the matter came out the girl's father, being drunk, told Dowdel that for forty pounds he could see to it that everything would be hushed up. Dowdel thought forty pounds too much and offered ten. At his trial Dowdel shamelessly confessed his misdemeanour with a frankness which later earned some leniency from the court. He speaks in what appears to be the writer's attempt to imitate his Irish accent. "Being asked if he would challenge any of the jury, he answered like an Irish St. Omer, Me like dem well, they be all honest men. Being asked, if he used to kiss the Girl and set her upon his knee ; he answered Yes my Lor the chile be so pretty and do twenty pretty tings make me laugh a hundred times. Being asked if he ever gave her money, he said, My Lord that be my Charitee, when her Mother bee in Prison, I tooke her to eat half my dinner, and I say this bee pretty Shile, I had love for the Shile and gave her any ting I had : she used to come often for my Charitee. But amongst the rest of his discourse he owned the matter in effect in these words, which happened about entering her body, he said, Me enter her dis far, pointing his finger to the Court." Wing, F 2337.‎

‎TRIALS.‎

‎The Life, Trial, Behaviour, and Execution, of Thos. Roe & Benj. Miller, who were Hanged at Nottingham, on April 2, 1823, for Highway Robbery.‎

Thomas Roe and Benjamin Miller, neither having reached the age of 23, were executed on Wednesday, April 2nd, 1823, for highway robbery. They were both natives of Nottingham, and together with a youth named Thomas Brooks, only 19 years of age, assaulted and robbed Samuel Marriot, a labourer, in the employ of Messrs. Simpson, Brick-hill Farm, near Arnold. They would have murdered their victim had not his cries have brought several persons to his assistance. Brooks was admitted evidence for the Crown and was saved.‎

‎TRIALS.‎

‎The Trials of Henry Sanderson, for Shooting Wm. Carr, and Robt. Bamford, Adam Adie, and William Knight, for the Murder of John Timms, at Nottingham Lent Assizes, 1822; with some Particulars of their Lives, Behaviour, and Execution.‎

‎12mo (150 x 85 mm) 37, [1]pp., several leaves mounted on stubs, new boards. Henry Sanderson, Adam Adie and Robert Bamford, were for murder, on Friday, March 22, 1822. Sanderson was out shooting pheasants, when he was apprehended by William Carr, gamekeeper to Sir Thomas Wollaston White. While wrestling with the gun Carr was shot, but he lived just long enough to identify his assailant. Adie and Bamford underwent the penalty of the law for the murder of John Timms, aged 17. The three, along with William Knight, were out on the town, after they decided to go poaching but only just got passed Trent Bridge before it began to rain. They then abandoned their plan and went to the Three Horse Shoes public house. Here they argued who was to pay for the drink consumed, Timms, having treated them all in the afternoon, refused to pay more than his share. On the way home the three robbed Timms of his watch and three shillings in silver. Knight then knocked him down, and Adie threw him over the battlements of the bridge into the river Trent. Adie and Bamford were executed after Bamford confessed, but Knight could not be identified, and was consequently acquitted. NOT found on JISC or OCLC.‎

A young woman Maria Marten was shot dead by her lover William Corder. The two had arranged to meet at the Red Barn a local landmark before eloping to Ipswich. Maria was never seen alive again and Corder fled the scene. He sent letters to Marten's family claiming that she was in good health but her body was later discovered buried in the barn after her stepmother spoke of having dreamed about the murder. Corder was tracked down in London where he had married and started a new life. He was brought back to Suffolk and found guilty of murder in a well-publicised trial. He was hanged at Bury St Edmunds in 1828 and a huge crowd witnessed the execution. The story provoked numerous newspaper articles songs and plays. The village where the crime had taken place became a tourist attraction and the barn was stripped by souvenir hunters. The plays and ballads remained popular throughout the next century and continue to be performed today."
