‎Soddy, Frederick‎

‎Wealth, Virtual Wealth and Debt - The Solution of the Economic Paradox‎

‎[9], 10-320 pages. Name Index. Subject index. Dedicated to Arthur Kitson, "the British pioneer of the new economics, to whose writings the author owes his initial interest in the fascinating problems of wealth and currency." - dedication page. Soddy [1877-1956] was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his work related to isotopes and the transmutation of elements resulting from radiation. Inspired by Kitson, he began writing about economics in 1921, focussing on monetary policy and the role of energy in economic systems. "Soddy's economic writings were largely ignored in his time, but would later be applied to the development of ecological economics in the late 20th century." - E. Zencey. On page 289 Soddy footnotes the Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion, stating "It is very widely believed that there has been something akin to an actual financial conspiracy to enslave the world." "But of the existence of a real conspiracy - a conspiracy of silence - on all monetary problems, in the Press and on political platforms, among editors, publishers and economists, who more than any others ought to be alive and awake to their infinite importance - there can be no question whatever." - p.291. "It was indeed a revelation to the author, accustomed to think of the battle for liberty of thought in scientific matters as having been fought and won centuries ago at the time of Galileo and the Inquisition, to find that in economics, as distinct from physics, it has not yet been won at all. If economics were really a science it would not need to protect itself from criticism by a conspiracy of silence." - p.292. Relatively minor marginal ink markings to thirteen pages. Front free endpaper removed. Ink stamp of "Technocracy Inc., Continental Headquarters, New York City" upon half-title. Front hinge starting. Above-average wear to publisher's green cloth. Dust jacket not included. A worthy reading copy of this fascinating study. Fundaburk 2119, Masui p.244. Book‎

‎Trudeau Revealed - By His Actions and His Words‎

‎225 pages including index. Through interviews with Trudeau's past and present associates, through study and translation of writings not previously published in English, the author has assembled a fascinating story which supplies the material for readers to make up their own minds about this remarkable, yet curiously remote Canadian. Contains fascinating chronologically arranged quotes on topics such as economics, freedom, and private property, from which we read such statements as... "We haven't been able to make it work, the free market system... the government is going to have to take a larger role in running institutions... It means there is going to be not less authority in our lives but perhaps more...." Book‎

‎The War on Gold - How to Profit from the Gold Crisis‎

‎Tarbell, Ida; Baker, Ray Stannard‎

‎McClure's Magazine, December (Dec.) 1903, Vol. XXII, No. 2 - The History of the Standard Oil Company - The War on the Rebate‎

‎A very rare copy of this, the first appearance of The War on the Rebate, Chapter 1 of Part 2 of Ida Tarbell's ground-breaking History of the Standard Oil Company. This 14-page chapter includes a one-page illustration of J.D. Rockefeller by George Varian, plus photos of William C. Scofield, Daniel Shurmer, John Teagle, George Rice, and Benjamin Butler. This chapter deals with organized espionage, the Scofield-Shurmer-Teagle Case, and related matters. With this work, Tarbell invented what we know today as investigative journalism. She was motivated to expose the methods of J.D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil as she felt he had unfairly damaged her father's oil business. The New York University Department of Journalism ranked this study as the fifth best work of 20th-century American journalism. Also contained in this issue is an intersting article entitled The Lone Fighter, by Ray Stannard Baker, which argues the U.S. is not a free country and Americans are not free, due to labor bosses, and government by and for 'The Bosses". Binding intact. Unmarked. Above-average but not excessive external wear. Moderate moisture exposure. Dozens of pages of glorious illustrated ads. A sound vintage copy. Book‎

‎A very rare copy of this, the first appearance of Cutting to Kill, Chapter 3 of Part 2 of Ida Tarbell's ground-breaking History of the Standard Oil Company. This 14-page chapter deals with J.D. Rockefeller's fervent desire to learn every detail of the oil trade, to be able to reach its remotest point, to control even its weakest factor - as this was his ideal of doing business. Illustrated with facsimiles of documents. Also included is an intersting article by Ray Stannard Baker which examines the corner in labor in San Francisco, where unions hold undisputed sway. The Owl Drug Co. boycott is discussed and photos of Walter Mac Arthur, Eugene E. Schmitz, and P.H. McCarthy are included. Also included is war correspondent Frank H. Schell's personal account of his experience at the Battle of Antietam, the bloodiest day in American history. Binding intact. Unmarked. Above-average external wear. Moderate moisture exposure. ‎Life Magazine, Vol. 67, No. 1746, April 13, 1916 "HUMILIATION ISSUE"‎

‎42 pages. A fascinating and important issue devoted to rousing American anger against Germany, particularly as a result of U.S. lives lost in the sinking of the Lusitania. Clearly, the people behind Life Magazine wanted the United States to become involved in WWI. Readers may draw parallels to recent history when 'fanatical Muslims' allegedly carried out the 9/11 attack, thus providing a pretext for George W. Bush to thrust his country into war in the Middle East. Covers detached from textblock. Last page almost loose. Unmarked. Above-average wear but still a quality copy of this significant piece of the historical record of America's road to entry into World War One. Magazine‎

‎Webb, Gary (Signed); Waters, Maxine (Foreword)‎

‎Dark Alliance: The CIA, the Contras, and the Crack Cocaine Explosion‎

‎Signed and inscribed by Gary Webb upon half-title page. xxviii, 548 pages. Footnotes, glossary and index. "Shows how the L.A. crack market flourished through a breathtaking combination of government negligence, greed, and criminal conduct... Demonstrates that U.S. government agencies, including the CIA, DEA and FBI, were aware of the activities of this well-connected drug network and did little or nothing to stop it. Indeed, in several instances documented here, the Justice Department, the CIA, and the secret National Security Council unit run by Oliver North, took extraordinary steps to protect the ring from public exposure. In the final chapters Webb reveals the conflict that led to his newspaper's stunning repudiation of its own series - and at what cost he stood by his story." - from dust jacket. Webb was found dead in his home in 2004 with two gunshot wounds to his head. Curiously, his death was ruled a suicide. Clean and unmarked with light wear. Dust jacket now in archival-grade mylar. A quality signed copy of this heroic work. Book‎

‎Secret Societies and Subversive Movements‎

‎419 pages. Index. Footnotes. Frontis portrait of Adam Weishaupt. "I have felt impelled to devote one more book to the Revolution as a whole by going this time further back into the past and attempting to trace its origins from the first century of the Christian era. For it is only by taking a general survey of the movement that it is possible to understand the causes of any particular phase of its existence. The French Revolution did not arise merely out of conditions or ideas peculiar to the eighteenth century, nor the Bolshevist Revolution out of political and social conditions in Russia on the teaching of Karl Marx. Both these explosions were produced by forces which, making use of popular suffering and discontent, had long been gathering strength for an onslaught not only on Christianity, but on all social and moral order." - Preface. Bookplate upon front free endpaper. Last two leaves of index loose but present. Back free endpaper missing. Front board loosely attached. Tiny bit of writing atop last blank page. Gilt lettering upon backstrip worn but legible. SINGERMAN 161, WEEMS p.71. Book‎
