‎Edition originale française dans la traduction de Pierre Le Jeune, protestant français réfugié en Hollande.Grotius était emprisonné à Loevestein lorsqu'il composa cet ouvrage en latin peu avant son évasion (1622). Il le commenta ainsi à son ami l'avocat général Jérôme Bignon: "Je savais qu'on ne doit employer pour défendre la Vérité, d'autres armes que la Vérité même; que je ne pouvais appeler Vérité que ce qui m'avait paru l'être; et qu'en vain j'entreprendrais de persuader les autres par des raisons qui ne m'auraient pas convaincu".Cette contribution du célèbre fondateur du droit international à la théologie arminienne a jeté les bases du méthodisme et du pentecôtisme. On retrouve la preuve de cet achat dans l'exemplaire Van Praet du catalogue de cette vente sur lequel il a porté le nom des acquéreurs (BnF RES-Q-917), et l'on retrouve le livre sur un catalogue Bailly du 24 mai 1784 (BnF DELTA-103).L'exemplaire provenait antérieurement de la collection Bonnemet vendue en 1772 et achetée en bloc par La Vallière ('Catalogue des livres du cabinet de feu M. Bonnemet', 1772 n°185. 'Catalogue des livres de la bibliothèque de feu M. le duc de La Vallière'. Première partie, 1783, n°809).
