TEFILOT BENE YESHURUN LE-YOM HAKIPURIM. THE DIVINE SERVICE OF AMERICAN ISRAELITES FOR THE DAY OF ATONEMENT, KEFI MINHAG AMERICA
1st edition. Later cloth, 12mo, 307, 55. In English, Hebrew and German. Singerman 1949, Goldman 53. The original two volumes of the Minhag America prayer book had both been published in 1857, one with Hebrew-English text (Prayer Book for Public and Private Worship) and the other with Hebrew-German text (Gebet-Buch fur den offentlichen Gottesdienst und die Privat-Andacht). In the 1860s, he took the project up again, issuing a three volume series of his Minhag Amerikathe American Traditionwith the present volume for Yom Kipur (The Day of Atonement), as well as a volume for Rosh HaShanah (the Jewish New year) and a combined Jewish Hymnal and Psalter, all shaped by his view of Reform Judaism in America. This volume thus represents one of the first Reform prayer books for the High Holidays in the United States. Some of the prayers are translated both into English and German. Wise, was a pioneer of Reform Judaism in America and became its acknowledged leader and its institutional architect, organizing the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (1873) , the Hebrew Union College (1875) , and the Central Conference of American Rabbis (1889) . The reforms that he instituted sought to change or adapt Judaism to 19th century America. He was also an organizer and mover in the establishment of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, in 1889. Elected its president, he served until he died. Wise believed in uniting American Jewry and hoped to publish a new American reform prayer book titled "Minhag America. The Machzor presented here is part of this project. (See: Goldman 44). Ex-library with usual marks, shows some old damp damage with a bit of waviness to paper and the boards a little bowed, but fully usable and clean in the text. About Good- Condition (KH-5-48DB)

[Anti-Prohibition] [Women's Organization for National Prohibition Reform]
Go to the Polls! June 20th 1933
New Haven: Connecticut Branch W. O. N. P. R. 1933. Broadside. 7" x 10 1/4. Single sheet printed on one side. Slight age toning. Fine condition. This is an original handbill from a major women's group soliciting votes to repeal Prohibition in 1933.

Women's organizations--particularly the Women's Christian Temperance Union--are strongly associated with passage of the 18th Amendment to the U. S. Constitution and the national ban on alcoholic beverages it brought in 1919. The major role women played in getting Prohibition repealed is not as widely recognized however.

This handbill was issued by the Connecticut Branch of the Women's Organization for National Prohibition Reform W.O.N.P.R. The W.O.N.P.R. was organized in 1929 by women who could no longer ignore the destructive if unintended consequences of Prohibition.

Here voters are asked to vote for ratification of the 21st Amendment reminding them that "A Vote for Ratification is a Vote for Repeal!" and "A Vote for Ratification is a Vote for Good Government Lower Taxes and Liquor Control."

The efforts of the W.O.N.P.R. and other repeal groups were successful and Prohibition was repealed with the ratification of the 21st Amendment in December of 1933.

A tangible piece of Prohibition and women's history. [Anti-Prohibition] Women's Organization for National Prohibition Reform
Series of Four Broadsides Advocating Repeal of Prohibition
Chicago: Women's Organization for National Prohibition Reform 1930. Single sheets. 6 1/8" x 9 1/8. Each broadside is mildly age-toned all have creases from folding along the short dimension two have light stains and two have tiny chips at ends of a fold crease. Fine condition overall. Women in the early 20th century were assumed to favor Prohibition and indeed had been a powerful force--in the form of the Women's Christian Temperance Union--in getting it passed. By the late 1920s however Pauline Morton Sabin could not ignore Prohibition's very destructive if unintended consequences. She founded the Women's Organization for National Prohibition Reform in 1929 to fight for repeal and within a year had attracted 100000 members. The WONPR quickly became the nation's largest anti-Prohibition organization. It's goal achieved by passage of the 21st Amendment in December 1933 the organization disbanded.

These four data and statistics driven leaflets published by the WONPR convincingly illustrate the failures of national alcohol Prohibition. They are individually titled:

- Has Prohibition Brought Temperance
- Tax Payers! Do You Know!
- For Your Children's Sake
- Do You Want To Put the Criminal Out of Business Help the Unemployed

The first broadside uses statistics to show drunkenness and alcohol abuse increased under Prohibition. The second lays out the combined fiscal damage from lost tax revenue and heavy enforcement costs. The third argues that Prohibition fosters speakeasies bootlegging furtive drinking disrespect for the law and very profitable crime. The fourth shows that Prohibition's restrictions just enriched the criminal element willing to flaunt it.

Together these ephemeral pieces are a fascinating artifact in the lesser known story of women passionately fighting for repeal of Prohibition.

Rare. Women's Organization for National Prohibition Reform unknown

[Chicago - Penal Reform] Charles E. Felton and Herbert A. Streeter
Original Patent Application No. 370011 Accomplished in Manuscript "To all to whom these presents shall come.a petition praying for the grant of Letters Patent for an alleged new and useful improvement in Heating and Ventilating Prisons or other Buildings.
Washington: H. Peters 1887. Very Good. Washington: H. Peters 1887. Folio 30.5cm.; ribbon-bound engraved self-wrappers wax-sealed and accomplished in manuscript; 8ll. of photo-engraved plans printed on versos only followed by 3pp. text printed in double columns on rectos only. Previous mail folds extremities a bit chipped and toned ribbons slightly frayed else Very Good internally clean and sound. Signed by Acting Secretary of State D.L. Hawkins and Commissioner of Patents Burton J. Hall.

Detailed patent application submitted by the Superintendent of the Chicago Bridewell Prison on September 13 1887. Charles E. Felton ca. 1832-1909 was the prison's longest serving overseer having held the position from its opening in 1872 until his retirement in 1890. Formerly a printer in Buffalo New York Felton entered the field of prison administration through the usual political platforms though he assumed his position in Chicago not through the usual channels but based on his previous experience serving as director of the Erie PA correctional facility. A Democrat and avid duck hunter with a rather unfocussed eye on the mayoralty of Chicago Felton was especially interested in enforcing labor in his prisons as a means of reducing costs and galvanizing individual reformation a position he clung to even past his retirement.

The present patent submitted with steel manufacturer Herbert B. Streeter 1833-1919 offered substantial air circulation improvements for prisons "or other structures where the tiers of cells or dormitories have an open hall or corridor without separation by floors or otherwise." Previously the Chicago House of Corrections had just one small ventilating flue leaving the air "absolutely foul and poisonous." The plans depicted here show two foul air flues and one steam-coil heating device per cell as well as additional open air gratings for increased circulation. Though it is unclear whether the patent was ever approved Felton in an address delivered before the Prison Congress four years later complained that the increase in crime rates could be blamed in part on "the comfortable quarters" offered prospective convicted criminals. Also to blame "the present views of the public and acts of legislatures as to systems of prison labor and its ease to the prisoner.the quality of food; their the prisoners' easy access to visitation and the readiness with which a sympathetic public accepts as true the complaints of the prisoners" "Inter Ocean" newspaper October 14 1891. This patent submitted to improve the comfortable prison cells Felton so bemoaned an important document for students and historians of prison reform architecture and engineering. H. Peters unknown

[ECONOMICS & REFORM] [INDIANA] OWEN, Robert Dale
Speech on Internal Improvements by Robert Dale Owen
N.p. n.d. Boston: 1838. Broadside 53cm x 39cm. Text in five columns beneath headline. Issued without imprint but introduced as follows: "To the Members of the Legislature of Massachusetts now in Session." Old folds; a few thin splits with no loss to text; complete and Good.

A large and substantial broadside printing the text of Owen's address before the Indiana General Assembly arguing against funding for public improvements and supporting his own bill to restrict the state's spending on infrastructure and to rescind existing contracts. The speech delivered at the height of the severe economic recession of 1836-38 perfectly illustrates Owen's post-New Harmony transformation from utopian socialist to populist politician: in it he inveighs against a laundry list of internal improvements claiming they will plunge the state into irreperable debt and asserts that the burden will lie heaviest on future generations of working people: "State debt! To those among us who like myself expect to live and to die citizens of Indiana and to leave our children here when we are gone how much of import is there in these two short words.Your property Sir - mine - that of every member on this floor - that of all our constituents is mortgaged for millions already to the London Rothschilds or some of their brother Rulers of the money market. While Indiana remains a state such a burden as that is a mortgage on the industry of her citizens."

Though the subject matter may at first glance appear somewhat dry this is a most illustrative document for the period directly addressing pressing questions of taxation and growth on the American frontier during the first decades of industrial expansion; involving perhaps the most colorful and complicated political figure in the early years of Indiana statehood. OCLC notes only a single holding Indiana State Library no other copies traced in commerce. unknown
