Rev. William James Bliss Batt 1834-1930 was a congregational minister from Massachusetts a great advocate of penal reform and Chaplain of the Massachusetts Reformatory a reformed prison in Concord MA. The Reformatory now the MCI-Concord is the state's oldest prison for men and served as Malcolm X's prison for 15 months from 1947-1948. This book follows the life of fictional prisoner Cyrus Knox and serves as a case study of the positive influence of religion on inmates the potential for rehabilitation and the necessity of reforms.
