Gibbon argued that Rome's fall was the 'natural and inevitable effect of immoderate greatness. Prosperity ripened the principle of decay; the causes of destruction multiplied with the extent of conquest; and as soon as time or accident had removed the artificial supports the stupendous fabric yielded to the pressure of its own weight' c.38 p.523. As a result this hollow empire succumbed easily to the twin forces of barbarianism and Christianity which had been gaining momentum over the course of the fourth century AD.<br /><br />Although attacked for his perceived irreligion Gibbon's work received many positive reviews and has since become a cornerstone text in the study of Western history. Dublin booksellers swiftly issued their own editions as soon as the first volume was published in 1776 and sold them at a lower price in England. "Such piracy was advertisement as well as competition" and Gibbon himself remarked that they "have printed it very well" Norton p. 94. 6 vols octavo 206 x 128 mm. With 3 folding maps. Contemporary sprinkled calf flat spines divided into compartments by gilt rolls red and green morocco labels. Contemporary bookplates. Speckled calf boards the spine has raised bands bordered in gilt creating five compartments a red leather label with "Gibbon's Rome" in gilt occupies the second compartment from the top and in the fourth from the top is a black leather label with the volume number in gilt gilt along the fore edge corners of the boards and speckled page edges. Boards and spines show some wear particularly Volumes One and Two which have abrasions on the boards the fold-out map in Volume One is torn owner name penciled on the front free endpaper of Volume One foxing to the preliminaries and terminals of each volume with some scattered foxing throughout but the text remains largely clean overall very good with the hinges sound. Edward Gibbon's classic work presented here as a handsomely bound set. J. & J. Harper hardcover

A little toned offsetting from the plates very occasional light foxing but generally clean. Contemporary tan diced calf neatly rebacked spines attractively gilt with titles vol. numbers and dates gilt borders marbled edges drab endpapers. Lightly rubbed a little staining to boards corners frayed but a very good good-looking set. Armorial bookplate of William Jeffrey Lockett to front pastedown of each volume. The shield depicts the arms of Lockett and Johnson implying this is William Jeffrey Lockett 1768-1839 whose mother Hannah was a Johnson. Lockett was a Derbyshire solicitor and Deputy Clerk of the Peace who was instrumental in organising the trial of the Luddite Pentrich Rebels in 1817. Gibbon's 1737-1794 masterpiece originally published 1776-1788. Volume I contains a 'Life of Edward Gibbon Esq.' on pp.3-16 volume XII contains a general index on pp.429-508.
