An uncommon example of a presentation copy of this title in its original unclipped dust wrapper. A volume of poetry by Irish writer Monk Gibbon friend of writers like W. B. Yeats.Bound in original brown cloth and inscribed by the author to the front free endpaper. The inscription reads 'To my friend Alister Mathews who likes poetry well enough to publish it and who was godparent to many of these poems when they first appeared at the font. Monk Feb 25th 1929'.This is the copy owned by Alister Mathews who operated the Greyhound Press throughout the 1920s through which he published the works of his friend the author Monk Gibbon. Mathews later collected and dealt artwork and literature. Bound in original brown cloth. In original unclipped dust wrapper in removable protective wrap. Externally very smart. Very slight bumping to head and tail. Slight fading and spotting to spine. Fading to board extremities. The odd marks to boards. Slight chipping and creasing to title label to spine. Spotting to endpapers. Author's ink inscription to front free endpaper. Dust wrapper very smart. Sunning to dust wrapper spine and extremities. Mild chipping to extremities. He explains that Brunbaugh's letter of 19 September 'went into a large collective envelope marked “For attentionâ€' adding 'You can guess what that means. It is lucky ever to have come out.' 24 Sandycove Road Sandycove Co. Dublin 26 May 1954. Poet. Two pages 8vo good condition. He gotr the impression from a letter George sent that he and another approved of Monk Gibbon's book. He quotes Flaubert on the idea that an author works hard but cannot expect profit "but to fail to see it even in print would stick in my gizzard." He asks for advice - does he know anybody at Heinemann he knows someone. "Has Verschoyle money behind him". He is finding delay and "subsequent disappointments too wearing. And with each one the typescript gets a little more woebegone". He discussses his and George's movements refers to "the Dublin transcripts" see below tells of plans to review George's new book for the "Irish Times". Since George is reading the typescript he will not ask Storm Jameson to do so. Poss. referring to his "Western Germany" 1955. This letter is enclosed in a pamphlet XXVth International Congress of the P.E.N. "The Literature of Peoples whose Language restricts wide Recognition" In Irish also Dublin-Belfast 8-13 June 1953 good condition to which Gibbon contributed "On the status of poetry today". An limited edition inscribed copy of this poetry anthology by Monk Gibbon with an unpublished poem written by the author on the first free-endpaper. This is a particularly special copy of 'The Branch of Hawthorn Tree' by renowned Irish poet and author Monk Gibbon. It is part of limited edition printing of 460 copies of which this is copy number 352. On the front pastedown is a previous owner's bookplate and reads: 'Michael and Irene Franklin 9 Lower Mall W.6.'. It is thought that Michael Franklin was known to the author because the author has written an intimate and heartfelt inscription on the front free-endpaper: 'Michael Franklin Most restless or mortals nextto indecipherable.' It is dated September 1927. Twenty years later in January 1947 the author wrote another inscription including a handwritten unpublished poem. It is indeed a very special copy of this book. This copy also includes the publisher's advert on an unattached piece of parchment. 'The Branch of Hawthorn Tree' is a collection of poetry by Monk Gibbon mostly consisting of lyrical prose poems. The book includes many coloured illustrations by French painter Picart Le Doux. The book was printed from Deberny Type on Arches paper. With the original glassine dustwrapper. In the publisher's original paper wraps. With the scarce glassine wrap intact. Externally smart with just a few handling marks to the front and rear wraps. Minor bumping to the head and tail of spine. Hinges are weak but remain intact. Glassine wrap has several chips to the head and tail. With a few ink marks to the front wrap. Internally binding loosening in places owing to the binding type. Pages are generally bright and clean. Very Good The Grayhound Press paperback
