‎Kosmas Indikopleustes (6th c.) was a merchant from Alexandria. He travelled nearly around the whole ancient world. Whether or not he came to India is still disputed. In the Christian topography he explains the structure of the world according to the literal interpretation of the bible. He learned to read and understand the bible by his Nestorian teacher Mar Aba, Katholikos of the eastern church, who was teaching the principles of the so-called Antioch school of exegesis. This work analyzes the structure and transmission of the whole text constantly referring to the manuscripts and gives for the first time a complete German translation with notes which serves to document the theses discussed. The so-called paragraphai which occur in the text are scholia and not narrative digressions. A new history of the transmission of the several editions which Kosmas produced of the Christian topography is given. Horst Schneider is working in the editorial department of Fontes Christiani at Munich. His research interests are Early Christian writers (200-600), the history of monasticism and the cultural transfer between Byzantium and the West (1204-1500). Kosmas Indikopleustes (6. Jh.) war ein am praktisch Leben interessierter Kaufmann aus Alexandria. Er bereiste fast die ganze antike Welt. Ob er tatsachlich auch nach Indien kam, ist in der Forschung umstritten. In der Christlichen Topographie erklart er den Aufbau der Welt mit Hilfe der wortlichen Bibelauslegung der syrisch-antiochenischen Bibelexegese, die er von seinem nestorianischen Lehrer Mar Aba, Katholikos der Kirche des Ostens, ubernahm. Die Arbeit analysiert die Struktur der uberlieferten Textmasse, wobei stets auch Bezug auf die Handschriften genommen wird. Bei den zahlreichen sogenannten Paragraphai, die sich im uberlieferten Haupttext befinden, handelt es sich nicht um vom Verfasser intendierte theologische Exkurse, sondern vielmehr um mehr oder weniger theologisch gehaltvolle Scholien, die aus buchtechnischen Grunden nicht am Rand plaziert werden konnten, und deshalb klar von den ebenfalls uberlieferten narrativen Exkursen zu trennen sind. Die verschiedenen Prologtexte werden im Zusammenhang der Editionsgeschichte der Christlichen Topographie neu interpretiert und eingeordnet. Die Untersuchung liefert zudem die erste deutsche kommentierte Gesamtubersetzung, die die uberlieferungsgeschichtlichen Thesen illustrieren soll, sowie eine Neuedition der griechischen Fragmente des sogenannten Indienlogos mit ausfuhrlichem Kommentar. Die Analysen und Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit sind als Prolegomena fur eine kritische Neuausgabe der Christlichen Topographie zu verstehen. Languages : German.‎

‎Un ensemble de 269 figurines en terre cuite, mises au jour par la Mission archeologique egypto-polonaise au cours des annees 1985-1991 sur le site de Tell Atrib - l'ancienne Athribis - dans le Delta du Nil, constitue l'objet du present ouvrage. Le caractere unique de cet ensemble provient d'un contexte archeologique date, qui offre la possibilite de reexaminer la chronologie des terres cuites qui, jusqu'ici, reposait principalement sur des criteres stylistiques. Le materiel d'Athribis contribue a une meilleure connaissance de l'industrie coroplathique de l'Egypte greco-romaine. En effet, maintes pieces sont issues des ateliers locaux dont les vestiges ont ete mis au jour sur le site. Dans ce groupe figurent un certain nombre d'objets uniques, qui n'ont d'equivalent ni en Egypte, ni ailleurs. Inspires parfois d'?uvres majeures de la sculpture contemporaine ces objets enrichissent sensiblement nos connaissances en histoire de l'art. Le chapitre I, fonde sur un choix de sources ecrites et archeologiques, presente l'histoire de l'ancienne Athribis a partir de l'epoque pharaonique. Le chapitre II contient les donnees relatives a la technique de fabrication des figurines, a la lumiere notamment d'une etude des ateliers decouverts sur le site. Le chapitre III, qui se refere a de nombreuses figurines analogues et connues dans le monde hellenistique, propose une interpretation stylistique et thematique des motifs religieux et profanes qu'elles representent. L'etude de l'evolution stylistique et typologique des figurines athribites, traitee au chapitre IV, apporte des donnees de premiere importance pour la datation des objets de l'industrie coroplathique de l'Egypte greco-romaine. Plusieurs elements indiquent que le site a ete occupe par des soldats macedoniens a la fin du IVe siecle av. J.-C. Leur presence a certainement exerce une influence sur le repertoire thematique des terres cuites.
